All preparations were made for D1xon's first WestPac in a decade. Families and friends gathered in the early ' morning hours to say their last goodibyes before the ship departed, Some sailors looked forward to their first voyage. DIXON 1S 643 feet long 88 feet wide and displaces 22 000 tons Replacement cost for the ship and installed eqtupment is more than 100 mtllion dollars There are 995 compartments mthis 12 deck high ship The ship can be compared to a small city with its own mayor and city council power and light company fire department law office and pohce department gourmet restaurants recreation boating construction and repair de- Q . , . . . . . . . 1 . , . , . . , . 1 ' - 1 , . Approximately the crew are women with future plans to expand tO percent. Designed specifically to repair and p submarines at a forward deployed site, DIXON is versatile and complex ship. Repair services range foundry to a watchmaking shop, with all kinds tools, test equipment, shops for woodworking, tion, electrical and electronic repairs, nuclear repair, sheet metal and steel work, repair of all types of weapons and tremendous storage areas for refrigerated and dry cargo food and other supplies. There are craneS, elevators and conveyors to provide movement betweefl decks to the various storage and working areas. DIXQNE' the only submarine tender that hasfullcapability for helicopc ter operations. 3'
