The ship was christened June 20, 1970 by Mrs. Paul Masterton, wife of Vice Admiral Masterton, USN (Ret), as Mr. Lloyd Bergeson of General Dynamics, Quincy Shipbuilding Division, looks on. The six-bladed propeller is 18 feet in diameter and will drive the 22,640-ton ship at a speed of 20 knots. Launched

AUGUST 7, 1971 DIXON became United States Ship DIXON on com- missioning and this event was marked with appropriate ceremony. Commander Masterson introduced guests and began the ceremony. Congressman G. Willi am Whitehurst, Second District, Virginia, delivered the principal address. Digni- taries present included Mrs. Frank C. Dunham, repre- senting the sponsor; Vice Admiral E. P. Wilkinson, Com- mander Submarine Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet; Rear Ad- miral Jamie Adair, Commander Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Mr. Frank J. Horan, representing the shipbuilder.
