This set me to wondering what had happened to my old schoolmates and I decided to find out. Raising the speed of my auto-car up to 1,500 m.p.h., I hurried home to find out. I landed on the roof of my modern little home, opened the roof-door, and hurried downstairs. I turned my time machine back to the year 1960 and here are my findings: Paul Yelton became Dixie's first All-American football player. Janet Young took Nurse's Training and be- came Head Nurse at Annapolis. She resigned from this position and is now doing night nursing in Burlington. Maryln Harrison became a model and was America's best-dressed woman of 1955. Ducksoup took Goose Tatem's place on the professional basketball team of the Harlem Globetrotters. Janet Turner achieved her life's ambition of marrying a coach and now has her own personal football team. Jim Rigney is still having a gay old time and now is owner of Vestibula Farm whose horse Yes, Lord won the Kentucky Derby last year. Jack Sahnger is now in the fourth year of his long baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Mary Jo and Evie are as famous a movie comedy team as Abbott and Costello. Their business affairs are capably handled by their manager, Charlene Witt. lra Richard went to Transylvania and con- tinued his studies to become a minister. Edna Miller has her own little dress shop and still pleases everyone with her sweetness and friendliness. Bertie Cuthbert, as cute as ever, is secretary to owner, Jim Wolff, of the Dixie Gardens Drive-ln Theatre. Janet Durstock, true to her perfect manners and ladylike ways, is now Dean at Miss Daugherty's Boarding School. Johnnie Eversole has replaced Charles Boyer in his duties of chief movie lover. Buddy Kenwright has followed in his quiet ways by becoming successor to Sherlock Holmes. I Kreks has taken Dena to live on his farm where he raises pigs. Kuhn and Martin are still together. They are now making their fortune selling Fuller Brushes. Carole Elliott is now dancing over in our neigh- boring city of Cincinnati and is the hit of the show. Charlie Otten's dream that Marian will help him run his grocery store as Mrs. Otten has finally come true. Bob Eaton and Jim Creamer are running a suc- cessful little garage in Covington. Needless to Say, Bob is happily married to Evelyn. The Women's Friendly Society has become a widespread organization under its able President, Joanne Caldwell. Mary Frances Penick now stars with Uncle Tom on the WCKY Jamboree. Mert Caldwell has risen from bus boy to the outstanding position of Head Waiter at The Lookout House. Joe Conrad is widely known through his own- ership of The Conrad Hampsters. Lela Bentley has gained the title Speed- Demon because of her championship typing. Page twenty-eight Mary Ellen Schmitt has at last fulfilled her desire to raise horses and is perfectly con- tent on her ranch in Lexington. Margie Jordan became a well-known novelist and won the Pulitzer Prize. Betty Walden, much to our surprise, became the fat lady in Don Stone's circus. Jim Osborne, using his abilities of manage- ment, now manages the local stage l????l shows. Stewart Roadcup is happily situated in his soft job as chief tester of Beautyrest Mattresses. Fred Keene became Mr. America of l955 because of his magnificent physique. Earl Walls is now chief sportscaster at WCPO. Bill Shawe and Carl Shell have established a Covington business. Their motto is Shawe and Shell shine shoes sharply. Norma Graham used her Home Ec. experience in keeping house for a well-known execu- tive after she married. Bob Greene combined his musical talent with his scientific knowledge and became known as The Singing Scientist. Pat and Chester are now married, with Chester as foreman at The Decoursey Railroad Yards. Kanebrak is still thriving after all these years. Lal is taking it easy as owner and Cecil does all the work as Manager. Mable Martin married her Burlington fella and now lives happily on their little ZOO-acre farm. Jim Morrison took coach's training at Centre and came back as head football coach. He is almost as well-loved as our own Sport. Douglas Dunn has taken over Schuerman's Car Lot but will not go so far as to bend over backwards to please you. L Palmer Sandman has become a well-known wrestler but still retains his name of Pee Wee. Our other two lovebirds, Neva Bryant and Jack Pearce have married and are living happily in Latonia. Nancy Coleman is now widely known as Jenny's top buyer and designer. Don Snider, of course, stuck to his little car and is now owner of The Crosley Corporation. LaVerne Hopperton was selected as Miss Working-C-irl of l957. Sheila Johnson went to Miami and used her qualities of leadership in leading a Redskin to the altar. Laura Ann Moore is now starring in a top notch comedy show proving that her title of Wittiest still fits. Virginia Wolf has suffered a complete change in her quiet ways and is now the Mrs. Vanderbilt of today's society. Don Coney his made his fortune trapping in Alaska. And finally l, due to my great love for it, have established a school for prospective , cheerleaders. Having finished my investigation as to the whereabouts of my classmates, l set out on a visit to Dixie where l met some of these friends and we talked of the many happy memories that we had of Dixie. Until we achieved a title, Freshmen, Dixie was just a new thrill. But with that title came responsibilities and new experiences. However, because we were just Freshmen there were few activities which we could take part in. Sophomoresl The second step up and only two to go. We even made money by selling Dixie Pins and proudly helped buy a canvas for dec- orating the gym. Then we were finally Juniors, the big year for all of us. Miss Allgeyer and Mr. Greene, our sponsors, helped us elect our officers who were: Pat Wert, President, Paul Yelton, Vice- President, Marian Marqua, Secretary, and Bertie Cuthbert, Treasurer. This year was chuck full of activities. We had at last made the grade! We had dances after the football and basketball games, sold maga- zines, and splurged nearly all our treasury on the big event of that year, the Junior-Senior Prom. The gym, decorated as an old Southern Plan- tation, was beautiful and the dance very suc- cessful. We chose Earl Redwine, as King, and Janet McClung, as Queen, with Janet Young, Sheila Johnson, Marian Marqua, Bertie Cuth- bert, Norma Graham, Mary Ellen Schmitt, Jim Morrison, Jack Sahnger, Jim Osborne, Fred Keene, John Eversole, and Chester Lichliter in attendance. This memorable occasion closed forever our careers as Juniors. After leaving our position as Juniors to the next in line, we returned to Dixie in September of l948 as Seniors, a long sought for title. Under the leadership of our sponsors, Miss Allgeyer and Mr. Greene, and Joe Conrad, our President, and with the cooperation of Pat Taylor, Vice-President, Marian Marqua, Sec- retary, and Lal Rankin, Treasurer, we carried out our best class ever plan. This was our big year and our last one, so we made the proverbial hay while the sun shone. One very special event, not only for us but for the whole school, was the winning of the N.K.A.C. Championship in football. We were proud to be the first Senior Class to see Dixie achieve this goal. We were even prouder of those boys, members of the Class of '49, who helped gain the honor. They were Earl Red- wine, Paul Yelton, Jim Morrison, Jack Sahn- ger, Bob Eaton, Cecil Allf, Jim Rigney, Don Deglow, Lal Rankin, and Jim Creamer. The problem of making money is always a big one but selling magazines, having shows, dances, and selling pencils with the basketball schedule inscribed on them were big items in fattening our treasury which in turn was flat- tened to pay for that ever important Dixian. On December the 22nd, with the Alumni as honored guests, the Class of '49 presented Sheila Johnson and Lal Rankin as Mr. and Miss Dixie Xll at the Alumni Ball. Decorating the Christmas tree at home wasn't half as much fun as fixin' up the old gym for our last formal dance. Then, there was the Senior Play, the Follies, the studying for final exams, and finally, GRADUATION. Now we are leaving Dixie to start on our own in a world which we hope will keep the peace it now possesses. Though we're leaving, mem- ories of Dixie and the fun we've had here will never fade. Like all the classes before us we hate to leave, but in so doing we know we are leaving her in capable hands that will uphold all the traditions and honors that make Dixie so dear to our hearts. Bertie Cuthbert Page thirty-four CLASS SONG There'll Be Some Changes Made There'll be a change in our schedule, our time, and our fun, When we leave Dixie and our grade is won. We'll miss all the dances, the games and the shows, How much we'Il miss them no one but us knows. We'Il miss the kids and the teachers and the gossip at noon We're really sorry that we're leaving so soon. The Prom and Alumni were memorable fetes, We've found that Dixie could never be beat, So now we're shedding a tear. We'll all remember and forever cheer, For dear ole Dixie the rest of our years. There'll be some changes made today, There'll be some changes made. Bertie Cuthbert Page thirty-five Cecil Ewing Allf ......,..... Leia Pearl Bentley ........ Neva Louise Bryant ...... The Class of 49 has selected as its two representatives Sheila Johnson as Miss Dixie XII and Lal Rankin as Mr. Dixie XII. It is also the custom of the Seniors to give a ball in honor of the Alumni of Dixie. This annual dance was a feature of the holiday season being given on December 22, l948. The Christmas decorations were highlighted by the lingering strains of Bob Le Monn's Orchestra. At the ball, Mr. and Miss Dixie were presented with key corsages symbolizing the key to their success at Dixie. Page forty wx JUNIOR PROM On May 8, l948, we, the graduating class, held our Junior Prom in the gymnasium. lt seemed like we were dancing on the lawn of an old southern plantation, so realistic were the beautiful decorations. The music for our most well-remembered formal dance at Dixie was furnished by The Rhythm Kings Orchestra. At the climax of the evening, homage was paid to Queen Janet McClung and King Earl Redwine by all present. Their majesties were attended by Norma Graham, Bertie Cuthbert, Marian Marqua, Mary Ellen Schmitt, Sheila Johnson, Janet Young, and Jack Sahnger, Jim Morrison, Jim Osborne, Chester Lichliter, Fred Keene, and Johnny Eversole. He decides to produce a play with real people taking the parts instead of regular actors. He assembles a slangy telephone operator, a cowboy, an English school- marm, and with the unwilling aid of the sour-faced director, DeLaSka, attempts to rehearse a play written by his star authoress, Janet Smith. The rehearsal is going along fairly well until the whole group becomes involved in the theft of an emerald. Penny goes on the trail of the jewel and trouble ensues for both him and the play cast. Peg Rogers, smelling a story, joins in the hunt for the jewel instead. Peg, aided by Mr. Bentley, turns detective and stages a bluff that frightens a confession from the thief. Laura Ann Moore. CHAMPIONSHIP This was the greatest football season in the history of Dixie Heights High School. ln fact, it was the best in the conferenceas it was the first time that any team ever defeated every other team in the conference. lt took coach Rice Sport Mountjoy just three years to perfect his system of the modified short punt formation and to really get it clicking. Mr. Mountjoy's first year at Dixie the team claimed a record of six wins and three losses, the second year, five wins and four losses, and the third year nine wins and one loss. After taking a licking from Louisa, the Dixie boys started in on Bellevue and succeeded in winning a thriller thirteen to twelve. This started the winning streak of nine straight victories including: Bellevue, Beechwood, Holmes, Ludlow, Dayton, Lloyd, Newport, Campbell County and Highlands. The Dixie team scored a total of one hundred and eighty-six points while holding the opponents to forty-nine. Our championship team added to their glory by defeating Highlands and Holmes for the first time in Dixie's history. , Special awards were received by Jim Rigney, Jack Sahnger, Paul Yelton, Earl Redwine, Tom Green, Gene Walker, Bob Eaton, Cecil Allf, Jim Creamer, Glen Asher, and Jim Morrison.
