Thanks for the memories, The The The For prom and Senior Play games we lost, the gam all of this we say- Oh, thank you so much. lasted, we loved our class but now lt s past things we'd do and say, es we won, Twenty-six Class History We, the class of '47, have winged our wayil through three years of senior high school and three years of junior high school at Dixie Heights. We have progressed from a group of individually minded students from many pri- mary schools into a well organized Senior Class. Having spent the first four years at Dixie during the war, we are now graduating into a world of peace and the many opportunities which it offers. We have soared through high school from one interest to another. It took preparation, though, to operate successfully as a class. During our Freshman year we were grounded. Because of lack of cooperation and interest, we could do no better than to prepare for the next year. In our Sophomore year we really began to function. Guided by our sponsors, Miss Giles. Mrs. Fitz-Hugh, and Mr. Harris, and under the leadership of our class officers, Jimmy Jones. President, Ross Herron. Vice President, Anne Hawes, Secretary, and Darrel Lear, Treasurer, we took off with a show of power. We gave one dance after a basketball game and sold Dixie pennants. The sale -of the pennants was very successful, and our profits made us the best financed Sophomore class in the history of Dixie Heights. i The next year, as Juniors. we continued our emphasis on modern design. With plans for the Junior Prom foremost in our minds we got off to an early start. Helped by our sponsors, Miss Allgeyer and Mr. Greene, we lost no time in electing our class officers, George Allf, Presi- dent, Mary Read Crizzell, Vice President, Anne Hawes, Secretary, and Dot Schawe, Treasurer. We gave three dances after basketball games and sold magazine subscriptions. This, plus our Sophomore efforts, made possible the Junior Prom. Despite material shortages caused by the war, our Prom was very successful. Darrel Lear and Jean Litton were elected to preside over the Prom as King and Queen. We returned in the fall to complete the last lap of our flight through high school. We elected our class officers: Kathy Brode, President, Bob Blackburn, Vice Presidentg Shirley Landmeier, Secretary, and Jerry Ostrow, Treasurer. For the engineering which has made our Senior year so successful, we are grateful to our sponsors, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Price. Our first activity was the Alumni Ball. Be- cause of the many alumni returning from the service, we had a record attendance. We elected Bob Blackburn and Nettie Lane Mr. and Miss Dixie X. Our next enterprise, the Annual, was a real test of our ability to work together. The Annual Staff was successfully organized with Anne Hawes as editor. The entire class was able to display its sales ability when we sold ads for the annual. We sponsored a photography project in which each member of the student body and Faculty had his picture made. We gave three dances after the basketball games. With the war over, plans went ahead on Dixiels football field. Our Senior year marked rapid progress at Dixie when the football field was built, and the lights which were erected made night games possible. The Pigskin Hop, which we gave following the last football game of the season, was held in the gym with a record attendance. At the same time Dixie's first band was organized under the leadership of Mr. Karl Schmidt. In May we presented the class play, '6House of Horrorsf' under the direction of Mrs. Donolley Cartwright. As the airship of our high school career nears its destination, we think back at the pleasant experiences which we have had. We are now taxiing up the runway to Baccalaureate, Class Night, and Graduation. Soon there will be others to take our place as Seniors. A record-breaking crowd danced to Bill Armstrong's orchestra and was entertained by a floor show staged by the Senior? of the Class of '17, under the direction of Miss Bobbie Kay Hitch, mistress of ceremonies. The Ball was the most successful ever held at Dixie Heights. I was reclining peacefully in a large, plastic, arm chair in my prefabricated pent- house, gazing reflectively at a picture of the class of ,47 hanging amongst the lion heads. guns, and other trophies of my exciting career. All day I had been bored, so bored, in fact, that not even my television radio, appetizing lunch of three vitamin pills, or a game of chess with my robot maid could comfort me. As I gazed. l began to wonder what had become of the wonderful intellect and incredible talent which had made up our class. Then, suddenly, I had an idea-why not find out? My helicopter! The very thing. ,lust stopping long enough to don my goggles and collapsible parachute, I raced to the roof of my apartment. There it was, my twin engine helicopter all ready for flight. I got in and started the motor. The plane shot abruptly into the air, made two dizzy circles around the building and was off. Taking a hasty glance at Broadway, I saw some other members of the class and decided to take them along with me. Together, Julie Bradley. Elaine Foster, and Dick Schild flew to every part of the globe and found evidence of our classmates in even the remotest parts of the world. This is the amazing account of what was discovered: George Allf and Billy Freshney, true to style, are now running a boarding house. They got their experience when they were Seniors. Caroline Ashcraft and Mildred Long are floor supervisors at Booth Hospital in Covington. Betty Bearden holds the record of the world's fastest typist. Tom Bell and Tom Droege are producing a A series of pictures entitled, Calling Dr. Eu- banksf' starring-you guessed it-Rita. Dorothy Bentley is head of the lingerie depart- ment at Coppins. Don Blackburn is now comedian in a traveling burlesque show that is expected in Cincinnati any day now. - Bob Coffey and Bob Blackburn have a prosper- ing business. They own the Bigger 81 Mortis Funeral Home. Julie Bradley has become a leading Shakespearean actress and plays the lead for the Maurice Evan's productions. Her interpretation of Juliet has received the critic's rave. Kathy Brode has been married three times and is now looking forward to the fourth. Each time the men get wealthier. Jeff Browning liked the Navy so well that he was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Schira. Wilma Campbell has fallen heir to the Campbell Soup Corporation. Ruth Carpenter is the secretary to President .Iohn Schira. La Verne Cochran is starring in the stage play, Harvey.'i Virginia Sears and Georgia Davis have had their suppressed desire fulfilled. They are next door neighbors in Vevay, Indiana. Gloria Demmien and Buzzy have settled down at last with a family of five. John Dorman is playing Pro. football now with Wviggie on the side lines to cheer him on. Nelma Due is president of the Bromley Canteen. Gilbert Feltel is coaching third base for the Cincinnati Reds. Ed Foltz and Bobbie Kay Hitch are singing in Moonlight Gardens at Coney Island. Elaine Foster now owns a cafe in the mountains of Tibet and feeds the people who lose their way in the snowy hills. Through some miracle .lim Free has turned woman hater and is now spending his time in' Schild's Bachelor's Roost. That's a joke, son. Nina Gardner and Skip Miller are the big wheels together at the I. C. Penny Co. in Covington. Shirley Graham had been a cheer leader so long that she majored in Physical Education in College and she is now the Physical Director at Dixie. Irma Lee Hageman has replaced her father in the position of City Manager. Anne Hawes through her experience as editor of the Annual of '47 has become editor of Harper's Bazaar. Thirty-seven 1 -C ,... Class Prophecy The things that Toady Herron is doing now are so shady that we are trying to keep them a secret. Jimmy Holland has replaced Jack Kirkwood on the radio with a program called Holland's Holiday. Any day Elmer Huesman can be found on the banks of the Licking River with a jug in one hand and a fishing pole in the other. He goes by the name of Hillbilly Huesman. Don Turner has bought Churchill Downs and he and Jim Jones are making a nice living laying odds. Henrietta Kahmann has put Gregg out of busi- ness with her revised shorthand hooks. Now that Doc is Grand Exalted Ruler at the Elks, Beverly Kues has followed him there to be his Secretary. Dorothy Lacally has advanced to the supervisor of the typing department at the H. L. Polk Co. Shirley Landmeier is a typing instructress at the University of Cincinnati. Nettie Lane is the ,loan Davis of 1957. Her voice may be heard weekly in her own program over station N-U-T-S. Darrel Lear has a nice position as Vice President -of the Stewart Iron Works. Jerry Ostrow and Harry Leidy are now in the shoe manufacturing business. They specialize in sizes 12-15. DiXie's Basketball team won the N.K.A.C.. the 355th District Champion- ship. the 9th Regional Tournament. and represented Northern Ken- tucky in the State Tournament at Louisville. Coach t'Kit Carson was named Man of the Year hy the Covington Junior Chamher of Commerce. He helped to organize the Dixie Heights Athletic Asso- Ciation. Hice lSportl Mountjoy came to us last fall as foothall coach. He led the football squad into its most successful season. His team was the first to use the new football field and the foothall game attracted a large following of fans. Against undefeated Purcell we had great hopes. but these slowly faded away. as we were defeated 25-6. This game marked the initial opening of our stadium. The 1946 Kentucky State Champs, Covington Holmes, defeated us in the next game 30-0. Still undaunted. the Dixie boys began to pile up victories. Ludlow was defeated 30-0g Bellevue, 34--03 Lloyd, 31-13. Then came the best game of the season, the Dayton game, which really tested the strength of our boys. The game ended in triumph for Dixie by a 7-6 margain. Our next victim was Campbell County, whom we defeated, 24-0, However. the last game of the season ended in a loss for Dixie. Highlands defeated us 20-0. Our season record was 6 wins and 3 losses. Dixie's best-ever finish. Only ten boys will ,he lost by graduation this year. They are: Lear, Herron, Cosney, Allf, Reed, Coffey, Blackburn, Rich. Free, and John Dorman, Captain. Coach Mountjoy's theory of uBlooking is the essence of football really worked this season, and still better results are expected next year. 4 F arty-nine Football Captain The backbone of Dixie's '46 football team was ,lohn Dorman, senior captain. John was a three-letter man before entering the Marines, where he served for Zlfz years. Upon his return to the squad. he was picked second team All-State center, second team Greater Cincinnati. and first team All-Conference. Because of his good showing on the grid-iron. he was awarded a four-year scholarship to the University of Kentucky. He starred on defense and sparked the team to a winning season. The seniors of '47 pay special tribute to a great football player and a fellow classmate. Vlfe wish him success in his football career. ' .
