1 CAPTAIN BRYAN H. SMITH Commanding Officer Captain Smith graduated from the University of California NROTC and Was commissioned as Ensign in 1936. During WW II he commanded minesvveepers and minesvveeper divisions in the Pacific. Since then he has commanded the Destroyer VOGEL-GESANG and Destroyer Division ONE FORTY-TWO, both in the Atlantic Fleet. He has twice served in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations and commanded the Mine Warfare Evaluation Detachment at Key West, Florida. He has served as Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander, Carrier Division EIGHTEEN, and as Chief of ,Staff and Aide to Com- mander, Mine Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. During his tenure of command DIXIE has been flagship for Commander, Cruisers and Destroyers, Pacific and currently for Commander, Destroyer Flotilla One. UP011 ClG'C2lCl1mC11'f Captain Smith will report to COMELEVEN for separation processing incident to retirement from a long and colorful naval career Captain Smith Was awarded the Bronze Star Medal With Combat "V" and a gold Star in lieu of a se ond Bronze Star Medal fOr m111eSWGSD1ng operations 1n the Pacific. The DIXIE Was relieved by the PRAIRIE in September 1949 and sailed for San Diego Where she continued repairing destroyers until overhaul at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. After overhaul, the DIXIE returned to San Diego Where she became nagship for Rear Admiral DuBose, Commander Cruiser- Destroyer Force, Pacinc Fleet. ' The DIXIE left San Diego 9 July 1950 for Japan to assist in the Korean Campaign The DIXIE left Japan and with the MISSOURI, MANCHESTER and seventeen destroyers, she participated in the bombarding of the East Coast of Korea. The DIXIE departed for the U. S. in February 1951 to resume duties as Flagship for Rear Admiral DuBose in San Diego. The DIXIE again left San Diego on 9 November 1954 for another tour of duty in the Western Pacinc, returning in 1955. Since 1955 the DIXIE has made three tours to the Western Pacinc Zone. In 1957 the DIXIE served as nagship for Rear. Admiral Rivero, Commander Destroyer Flotilla One. In 1958- she returned to San Diego and serviced as nagship for Rear Admiral Smedburg, Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Forces Pacinc. In January 1959, the DIXIE ,again returned to WestPac. She served as nagship for Destroyer Flotilla ONE, Rear Admiral Weathervvax, Commanding. She visited such ports as Hong Kong, Beppu and Sasebo. She returned to San Diego in August of 1959. While in San Diego, she served as flagship for Rear Admiral U.AS. G. Sharp, Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Forces Pacinc. The DIXIE rotated again to WestPac in 1961 serving as flagship for Rear Admiral Leverton, ,Com- Imander, Destroyer Flotilla ONE and Rear Admiral Waters. After returning to the West Coast, the DIXIE Was given a FRAM overhaul at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and in July 1961 returned to San Diego to become nagship for Rear Admiral Verden, Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Forces Pacinc. The DIXIE rotated again to WestPac for the present cruise in February 1962 and became nagship for Rear Admiral Van Arsdall, Commander, Destroyer Flotilla ONE.

CAPTAIN NEIL H. FISHER Commanding Ofhcer Captain Fisher Was born in Balfour, North Dakota on 28 January 1917. He graduated from Fargo High School, Fargo, North Dakota and attended North Dakota State College prior to graduation from the U. S. Naval Academy-Class of 1940. He has attended post graduate school at the U. S. Naval Academy and at John Hopkins University, Baltimore Maryland. Captain Fisher has served in the cruisers CINCINATTI and BALTIMORE, the Guided Missile Ship NORTON SOUND, and the destroyers BRUSH and LOFBERG. He has also served as Gunnery Train- ing Officer on the staff of Commander, Training Command, Pacific and as Commander Destroyer Divi- sion SEVENTY TWO. He Was Program Director for Terrier and Tarter Guided Missiles' in the Bureau of Ordinance. Captain Fisher reported to DIXIE from the Office of Naval Operations Where he was Head of Surface Programs Branch, Undersea Warfare Development Division. Some of the campaign and service medals Worn by Captain Fisher are the American Defense Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the Philip- pine Liberation Medal.
