COMMANDER ROLLIN F. HEASSIER Executive Officer Commander Rollin F. Heassler, present Executive Officer of the Dixie, has served the U. S. Navy honorably for the past 28 years. Prior to entering the Navy he attended Eastern Oregon College. He later received his commission as Ensign in 1943 while serving aboard the USS Cleveland. Just prior to World War H he served aboard the USS Buck, operating in the North Atlantic escort- ing convoys to Britain. He has served aboard many other ships, among which are the USS Louisville, USS Ontario, USS Guadelupe, as Executive Officer, and USS Gurke, as Engineering Officer and subse- quently as Executive Officer. His Naval career has taken him to various shore assignments which include the Fleet Training Center at Pearl Harbor where he was the Senior Atomic Defense and Damage Control instructor and later as Oiiicer-in-Charge of the Fire-Fighting School. He was the Training Supervisor between ships and Underway Training Element during his tour at the Fleet Training Group, San Diego. He has served with MSTS WESTPAC as Deputy Maintenance and Repair Officer. This assignment called for close associations and liaison with private industry in dealing with bids for repair to MSTS ships. P1'10f 'CO-1115 DTCSCHY HSS1g11mC11'C, Commander Heassler was the Senior Ship Superintendent at the New York Shipyard for the construction of the USS Constellation, the lirst missile carrier, which merited many complimentary remarks from his superiors. Commander Heassler has been awarded the Navy Unit Commendation as a member of the crew of the USS Cleveland and Cruiser Division Twelve for action against the enemy combatant ships off Empress Augusta Bay. .Acmongi his campaign and service medals are American Defence, European Th.e?tf? CAPTAIN NEIL H. FISHER Commanding Ofhcer Captain Fisher Was born in Balfour, North Dakota on 28 January 1917. He graduated from Fargo High School, Fargo, North Dakota and attended North Dakota State College prior to graduation from the U. S. Naval Academy-Class of 1940. He has attended post graduate school at the U. S. Naval Academy and at John Hopkins University, Baltimore Maryland. Captain Fisher has served in the cruisers CINCINATTI and BALTIMORE, the Guided Missile Ship NORTON SOUND, and the destroyers BRUSH and LOFBERG. He has also served as Gunnery Train- ing Officer on the staff of Commander, Training Command, Pacific and as Commander Destroyer Divi- sion SEVENTY TWO. He Was Program Director for Terrier and Tarter Guided Missiles' in the Bureau of Ordinance. Captain Fisher reported to DIXIE from the Office of Naval Operations Where he was Head of Surface Programs Branch, Undersea Warfare Development Division. Some of the campaign and service medals Worn by Captain Fisher are the American Defense Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the Philip- pine Liberation Medal. 1 1 REAR ADIVIIRAL CLYDE J. VANARSDALL, JR. Commander Destroyer Flotilla One Rear Admiral Van Arsdall Was born in Indianola, .Mississippi in 1913. He entered the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1930 Where he excelled in athletics. He graduated and received his com- mission as an Ensign in 1934. He served on many ships including the INDIANAPOLIS, VINCENNES and the PORNETT. In 1942 he became Executive Officer of the V-12 Naval Reserve Ofhcers Training Program at the University of Oklahoma As Captain of the USS ANTHONY CDD 5155 he received the Navy Unit Commendation the Navy Cross and the Silver Star for heroism in action against the Japanese In August 1952 he Joined the staff of the the Naval War College Then he served as U S Naval Attache in Paris France In 1960 he reported to the office of Chief of Naval Operations to serve as head of Joint and International Plans branch, Strategic Plans Division He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1962 prior to becoming ComDesFlot ONE ! , . n , . . - . . - Q I 0
