The intent then is to create the essay depicting the many experiences that have led us to this momentous decision making time, with the emphasis on 1988. its events, its triumphs, its defeats, all leading to the conclusions on which we base our choice, which road to take. •from “The Road Not Taken Robert Frost Division Avenue High School Levittown, N.Y. 11756 PERSPECTUM '88 Mr. Goeiz and Mr. Conn preparing for spring concert The magnificent Cecilia Walsh. The format, layout and presentation are attractive, interesting, and informa- tive. Congratulations also go to all seniors who. by hard work and often diligent study, have met all of the requirements for a high school diploma. I hope that your high school experience has prepared you for the years ahead. I know you will always treasure the skills you have learned and the friendships you have made. This yearbook will soon become a personal heir- loom. Its value will increase as each year passes. You will open this book twenty years from now with a mixture of embarrassment, sadness and joy. I was unknown to most of you and needless to say I knew very little about the school. A year has come and gone and I can easily say that now I feel as though I have been here for years. You have in many ways made me feel accepted. The friendships that I have developed extend beyond the teaching staff and now include many of you. We have worked together to make Division the school it is today. The legacy you leave is one of hard work and concern. Division Avenue High School is a better school because of your efforts and for that I thank you. I wish you well and continued success in the future. ------- v____s Sincerely, John R. You may choose the time-worn path which will be familiar to you or you may occasionally choose to take the uncommon road which may be filled with adven- ture. To do so will make your life more challenging and. perhaps, more fulfilling. May you have the success which you richly deserve. May you continue the friendships which you have developed throughout the years in high school and may you always retain the many memories of your youth. Sincerely. I Thaddeus F. Gibney Assistant Principal Mr. Thaddeus Gibney Assistant Principal t Mr. Ronald zoia Assistant Principal Twelve, is this a special number? Let's see. Twelfth grade, that's good. Twelve years ago the class of '88 was just entering grade one. Twelve o'clock—lunchtime at the deli. Hmmm. Twelve years from now will be the year 2000. Wow. time flies. What will Levittown be like in the year 2000? Materi- ally speaking VCRs and MTV will be old fashioned, but what will be new? How well prepared for the future are we? Certainly we ll read, but what will we read? Our use of English, knowledge of business methods, speaking a foreign language and computer literacy will benefit us. The basics, they’ve been important for centuries, why not the twenty-first century? Problems will be solved eventually. Will solutions be- found for AIDS, the trade deficit Nicaragua, terrorists? This class of '88 will contribute far more than tax dollars to the solutions. This class is the future. I received a nice calendar for a Christmas card this year. Under the month August it says. “Most of us spend a lot of time dreaming of the future, never realizing a little arrives each day. I like this type of saying. It is creative, witty, and inspirational. I promised myself that I’d make the most of the next twelve years. Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to do likewise. The future is now! The Dragons posted four shutouts and just missed the playoffs in a loss to Valley Stream Central 23-22. One of these shutouts came as The Big Blue Wrecking Crew ’ crushed cross town rival. MacArthur, 19-0 in Division’s Homecoming Day game. The Dragons were led by only 10 seniors and the rest juniors and sophomores. The seniors were All-Conference defensive back Jarrod Meistle, All-County Honorable Mention Pat Boutin. All- Conference Steve Coffey, as well as defensive tackles Rob Young, and Glen Buchan, tight end Jim Fink, defensive and offensive lineman Mike Jordan, running back Ed Quinones, wide receiver Shaun Walters, and defensive back Rob Pickard. One of them is Doug Yerkes who is outstanding in other sports as well. The other is James Ensenat, one of the Spanish Exchange Students. The team won six games, three of them shut- outs. Only three games were lost and two were tied 0-0. The team made it to the playoffs, facing Valley Stream Central, and played a close game all the way into overtime losing 1 -2. Three of the team members. Bob Maurer. James Hasselman and Doug Yerkes made All Division. 119 Ciris' Soccer Team Surprises Standing left to right: Coach Kissane, Barbara Meyer. However, with the help and expertise of senior co- captains Julia Czachor and Karen DeSantis, the girls jumped out to a first half record of 6-0. With the recent addition of Janice Portoghese, the only other senior on the team, the lady Dragons were able to win eight straight league games dating back to last year when they were Conference IV champs. Powering the offense were all star selections Roseann Brennan and Lisa Hillman. Roseann has scored 32 goals in two years of Varsity competition. The secret to this years success, however, was the strong play of the defense. The entire defense made the Nassau County All Star Team. They are Julia Czachor. Karen DeSantis. Barbara Meyer, and Kim Bumbalo. 121 f ' Bloodied But Unbowed Top Row; L Savino, J. Schwemmer, E. TucciUo, K. McNulty. A. Koprowski. R. Scholl. Second Row C. Lynch. L Cerrochi. J. Schiffer. J. Although everyone places the emphasis on high scores, the 3 and 9 record of this years Varsity Girls Tennis team is still a winning one. The team’s coach, Mrs. Askinasi, placed importance on having the girls try their best to work as a team, and above all, have fun. The team followed her advice and did just that. Although the scores did not reflect a winning season, all of the girls showed a positive outlook in each match. There were only four seniors on this year's team. They were Teresa Alfaro, JoAnn Santigate. Stephanie Yaboni, and Nancy Browning. Good luck to all of them, and congratulations to Teresa for making All-Conference. 123 Cive me a D... Devoted, hardworking, and dedicated are just a few of the words that can describe this year s Varsity Cheerleading team. Mo matter what the weather may have been, the enthusiastic girls were out there psyching up the crowd and cheering on the Blue Dragons. This year, the team was led by a new coach. Miss Tracy Farrell, who taught the girls a new style of cheering. Also, in December, the team went into competition for the first time. Although they did not do as well as expected in the highly contested event the girls were able to enter into a new experience, and it will not soon be forgotten. 124 Rolling in 1 This year's Varsity Bowling team, coached by Dennis Pahel, finished in first place in Con- ference I with a record of 202.5-91.5. Throughout the season, many outstanding games were played with the highest by Bob Perinka. who had a 279. Also. JV totalled 28- 14 for the season. In the County Finals, Divi- sion Varsity placed fifth with, again. Bob Perinka bowling the high game of 274. Tony Garbacki qualified for the State Tournament with the second highest average in the county. 125 Catch 'Ya On The Rebound J. Lipani. P. Argiros, S. O’Brien, J. Ensenat R. Youngberg, B. Parpan, A. Despite only a couple of returning players, this year’s Varsity team went 7-13, which ex- ceeded everyone's expectation (despite the fact that the team was made primarily of underclassmen). Highlights for the team included an overtime loss to Island Trees, and a last second victory over MacArthur on a 3-point shot by Junior Rob O’Brien at the buzzer. Brad Parpan, only a Junior, not only was selected to the coaches All-League Team, but also broke the school’s single season scoring record (which he previ- ously set himself) as the only person to average 20 points a game. Other members of this year’s team were Sophomore John Lipmi and Juniors Paul Argiros, A1 Brust, Scott Shermansky, and Rich Youngberg. Senior members of the team were Sean O’ Brien, Rob Sami, and Jaime Ensenat, an exchange student from Spain. 127 Winning Isn't Everything This year's Girl’s Varsity Basketball season finished with a record of 6-8. The team had only three seniors—Janice Portoghese. Lisa Elliot and Kathy McNulty. This year's team did much better than generally expected. Although the team lacked in height their outside shooting was excellent especially from the new three-point range. The highlights of this year was the Roosevelt game, on an early Saturday morning after a late Friday night Roosevelt had three girls who were in the 6-foot range. Division was leading at the half, 23-21. All the girls played their hardest together, but the score was Roosevelt 49, Division 47. The team would like to thank their coach, Donna DeSouza, for all of her time and effort she expended for the team. It was a fine learning experience. This year’s All-Star team was selected at the end of the season by all the coaches. Junior Tara O'Gallagher was chosen All- Division, All-League, and All-County. Kathy got the second highest pick this year for All-County. A fine year of accomplishment accentuating the saying, “winning isn’t everything. Top: D. Berju. A. Baranello. E. Tuccillo. K. McNulty. J. Literary Editor, who struggled to give this book some personality through interesting write-ups and poetry. Of course, there were others who lent a much-needed helping hand. This years events included participation in the Homecoming parade with costumes from Spain and Latin America, a Chanukah and Christmas party at the home of one of its members, where international foods were served, the publication of a Spanish magazine. “La Voz . guest speakers from Latin America and Spain, writing to pen pals from Argentina. Colombia. Mexico, and Spain, tutoring Spanish students, and making a showcase in one of the halls, which provided the Spanish students with Spanish culture and current events. Perhaps their biggest event though was the student exchange. Through the Spanish Heritage Exchange Program, three students were able to come to Levittown to live with host families, attend classes at Division and make new friends. They were Teresa Alfaro. Jaime Ensenat and Teodoro Gonzalez. In return, three club members will receive scholarships to visit Spain this summer. Having these and other Spanish-speaking students here at Division has enabled everyone to be exposed to foreign ways. The students have allowed all of us to learn about a foreign culture. The seniors, along with the rest of the school, are grateful that we could spend this year with them. 138 The Flame—Rekindled Nicole Wenz (Sports Editor). Tara O Gallagher (Photography Editor). The new Flame office, located on the second floor across from the school library, has become a haven for new talents and ideas. The editors of the Flame extend hopes of good luck in the future to the voice and pulse of Division. 39 Student Government This year, the Student Government was under the direction of Mr. Goelz. with students Jennifer Burtt, Jennifer Maher, and Daniel Pfeifer running the activities. This included such things as plan- ning and organizing Homecoming Day so that it would be a success. A Thanksgiving Food Drive was completed so that 10 needy families in the community had a festive dinner. Christmas baskets were also made up. The Student Govern- ment also ran such things as Spirit Week and the Variety Show. The students commented that it never seemed like work since they were always having so much fun. The goal of the organiza- tion is to promote more effective channels of commu- nication between the faculty, students and the commu- nity by providing a forum to encourage the sharing of ideas, information and resources. From this communal exchange it is hoped that all will attain a bet- ter understanding of the human relations process. Fund raising is a big part of the club, like the White Elephant Sale that helped raise $500 for the Ronald McDonald House. They are planning to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation, an organization dedica- ted to granting the last wish of a terminally ill child. The advisors of the club are Fran McNamara, Katie Coleman, Thomas Shiel. Jan Friedman and Muriel Fox. National Honor Society The Division Avenue Honor Society, under the direction of Mr. Cestaro. is just one chapter of a na- tion-wide organization. The organization holds rigid regulations for admittance, and as a result, its members consist of only the most academically ex- cellent students. Each year, the Honor Society holds an induction ceremony in which new members are admitted. These students may remain a part of the Society for the remainder of their high school career providing they fulfill the requirements of the organization. This year, the officers of the Honor Society at Divi- sion were: Diane Meal, president: Laura Becklein, vice-president; Jennifer Maher, secretary: and Steve Fisher, Treasurer. They led the entire group in parti- cipating in such school functions as Open School Might In addition, the Honor Society provides tutor- ing services to those students who need it Back Row: J. While material for the magazine may be submitted by any student, the majority comes from students in Mr. Miller's creative writing class, a course designed to teach students tech- niques to better their fiction writing. The Laureate gives these students an opportunity to have their work published and at the same time gives great pleasure and entertainment to all who read iL The magazine has been a huge success in the past few years and all those involved feel this year will be no exception. One of the greatest lessons one has to learn is to accept responsibility. Every year, each class holds an election to choose those members of their class who will lead the activities for the year. Those who volunteer to run and those who are elected represent the epitome of responsibility as they agree to represent their classmates in all of the year's upcoming events. They put in long hours and make many sacrifices in order to work on events such as school dances. Spirit Week, Homecoming and the Junior and Senior Proms. The lesson of responsibility is one that all students need to learn, but unfortunately, each year shows that only a few are willing to accept it and it is these few who need to be thanked. 12th Grade: J. Fruit Swirls, and Rice Krispie bars. Along with food, the store also sells buttons, Barron’s and (JPCO review books, and Dragon apparel. Next year, they look forward to moving into the spare room within the Cafe West If you happened to notice the newly decorated door, credit should be given to the artist Raeanne Leippe. This year the store also started accepting Dragonbucks. I People who worked in the School Store: Ed Forseth, Jeanette DeSantis. Clara Herran. George Christine Brennen. Colleen Gillis. Stacey Bell. The goal of SADD is to put an end to the senseless tragedies caused by these problems. SADD is more than merely students against driving drunk. It is an organization dedicated to wiping out drug and alcohol abuse, as well. The first step in ending these problems is becoming more aware of them. This has been the major focus of SADD activities—informing the students of Division about the dangers of D.W.I. and substance abuse. So far they have sponsored numerous assemblies, helped to keep the holidays safer by dis- tributing candy canes with a message and leaflets urging students and faculty to drive sober, and maintained the SADD showcase in the lobby. In addition, they've constructed a prize-winning float for Homecoming '88. and are planning to send several members to Wisdom Lane Middle School to help educate the students there of the dangers of substance abuse. SADD realizes that all of the problems of drugs, alcohol, and D.W.I. will not be solved easily, and unfortunately, not in the immediate future. However, by taking the initiative, we are working to destroy the diseases. If they help only one person set their life on the right track, their mission is a success. Top: Mrs. McNamara. J. Woodwind players are selected from the band and perform along with the strings for the winter and spring con- certs. During the winter, outstanding members are selected to play in the orchestra pit for the school play. They practice diligently, and their hard work pays off with the rise of the curtain on the play s opening night Orchestra Top row: L. 0liott. J. Twaite. S. Bell, M. Pollio. V. Giordano. D. Massiello. Their professional attitude and appearance seemed to prove how dedicated they were this year. The all-around great atmosphere in the band room was just one result of the family- like closeness each band member feels. 147 Stage Band A favorite at our school concerts, the Stage Band creates excitement among the audience. It seems to lift the spirits of those listening because of the variety of songs; there is something for everyone. The reaction of the audience brings a smile to the players faces, which makes everyone enjoy it just a little more. Con- gratulations to this year's Stage Band for doing such a great job! This year the Division Avenue Blue Dragon Marching Band was under the new direction of Mr. Edward Smith. Thanks to Mr. Smith's drive for perfection and enthusiastic attitude, the band went on to win several major competitions. The most memorable moment of the year was when the band won first-place in the Tournament of Bands Chapter 8 Championship. They went on to win 17th place in the Atlantic Coast Championship. All that hard work really seemed to pay off. 149 Chorus The Division Avenue Chorus consists of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen who are dedicated to singing and performing profes- sionally. Led by Mr. Brown, the chorus exhibits their talent each year in both the winter and spring concerts. In addition, this year they performed a concert for the Board of Education. The musical selections of the chorus range from classical Mozart to popular songs, such as The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Decisions, decisions, what should I do? Go on to four years at a secondary? Or should I go to work for the rest of my life? Get married, have kids, and support my wife? I could sit back and reminisce about the great times in school I'll miss. Being with my friends, in detention and such, (Just 'cause I was late five times from lunch!) Seeing Mrs. Thomas, her perky little self, I’ve never seen so people afraid of an elf. It started with the parade in which many organiza- tions, schools, and of course, the princesses' and finalists participa- ted. Division Dragons were victorious over the MacArthur Generals by a 19-0 score. The half-time ceremony was a beautiful sight to see. The princesses were Kerri Clements and escort Dougie Yerkes. Nicole Cuccaro and escort Vinny Leanzo, Trecia Ferro and escort Ed Dougherty. Christine Hofmann and escort Danny Pfiefer. Kim O’Neill and escort Rob Hancock, and Fran Rodriquez and escort Tom Vesque. The finalists were Tracy Budrewicz and escort Joe Bonsignore. Tammy Linn and escort Bill Madeo. Lisa Carbonell and escort Ed Cole. Jennifer Camilleri and escort Chris Smalley. Lisa Elliott and escort Walter Scott There was tension in the air as every- body waited for the results. Jennifer Camilleri was named the first runner-up. Lisa Elliott became Division Avenue’s 1988 Homecoming Queen.
