PERSPECTUM 1985 DIVISION AVENUE HIGH SCHOOL LEVITTOWN, NEW YORK THPNIPYOU THAN MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ThANkPOJ TNAN Our senior year is one that won’t soon be forgotten and thanks to you, the memories will last even longer. For the past two years, you have served as our advisor. During that time, you gave unselfishly of yourself. We've worked together with you on our proms, our class trips and also in the selection of our class rings. Whenever something was for our benefit, it became your top priority. You worked so closely with us that you became one of us. You were always there for guidance or if we just felt like talking to someone. We’ve grown accustomed to your jokes and your sense of humor no matter how strange it may tend to be at times. We must admit that we're going to miss them both. We will always remember the special gift that you have given us: yourself. Not many people are able to give so freely of themselves. This trait is just one of the many that you possess which has made us grow to appreciate and to love you. For all your time, effort, and understanding, we thank you. Mr. K. You will always be remembered in our hearts and we hope that we hold a special place in yours. Thank you for always being there for us, but most of all, thank you for making this one of the best years of our lives. ) Knowing that win or lose, i e tmg oAMe p = u« ao the oame o u e Dawn Addotta Edward Addotta Frances Alaia John Allen Yemile Al-Sullami Noreen Anderson Eric Anello John Ankelmen Melissa Aviles Diana Backer Theresa Baranello Marie Ardito Gerardo Armengau Peter Arnold Elizabeth Aronson Andrew Atkins Christine Bellow William Beloff Gail Berae Teresa Barsuaskas Nancy Bauman Christopher Becklein Carolyn Barton Robyn Bauer Amy Best Cynthia Bock Christine Bonsignone Elizabeth Brennan Laura Brenner Terri-Sue Brimlow Brenda Brooks Christa Broullon T - TEAM 31 Hugh Brown Laura Brown Kristi Bryan Kenneth Buchan Christopher Buck Anthony Cerdillo John Carman Susan Carragher TV« TEAM 33 James Cahill Edward Calabritto Debra Campbell Patricia Camphausen Deborah Cerbonell Thomas Clare Emil Coccaro Christina Commisso Mark Carrozzo Christopher Cassidy Kathleen Cassidy Maria Ciaravino Donna Cintron Barbara Cornwell Diana Corpac Anthony Cotaifas John Cotaifas Kathleen Coughlin Edith Connico Donna Coon Susan Connelly □awn Crawford Christine Cyran Laura Daly Richard Demele Diane Dergenio George Delgiorno Joseph Criese Luis Cuesta Timothy Dodd Christopher Doherty Stacy Dougherty THE TEAM 37 Susan Duffy Margaret Dunn Michael Dunn Ernest Dyrlie Gregory Eatz Raymond Every Susan Faille Tracy Farrell Barbara Fazio Ronald Femstrom Robert Fitzpatrick Colleen Foley Kim Furrer TV« TIAM 30 James Gilroy Angele Glaser Robert Grant James Georgoudes Donna Gangi Gary Giampetruzzi Therese Gilmertin Paula Gabriel Maura Greeley Patricia Greemdge Janice Grogan James Haaf Donald Hagan Daniel Hannan Kristine Hansen Michael Hanson TV TEAM 41 Lerry Herran Heath Hesser Warren Hirt AS 8§NOPS Rudy Hevelke Robert Hepworth Richard Herold Kevin Harrigan Teresa Hartman Glenn Hoffman Pietrina Hofmann Richard Horan Lorraine Horton Patricia Hosek Jennifer Huggard Gregory Isola Quinn Jaeger Thea Janal Douglas Jordan Thomas Joyce John Kallas Joseph Kaszovitz 44 8EMOA8 Jacqueline Kayne Laura Johnson Lisa Kavanaugh Jamie Kelly Patrick Kenney Teasha Kinchner Cindy Krech Diane Lacey Steven Lamport Michelle Landesman Gary Lang TMS TEAM AO Kathleen Leary David Leest Joan Lemieux Thomas Leonard Colleen Limerick Dina Lopez Paul Lucas Donna Lynch Mary Lyons Patricia Lyons Julian Machimbarrena Robert Macioch Joan Majewski TMB TIAM 47 Kathleen Maloney Sandra Maly Michelle Marino Denise Meroney David Mass Gregory Mayer «8 SEM'OOS Michael McGerthy Elizabeth McCormack Kevin Meehan Elyse Meistle Joseph Mendolia Patricia McGoldnck Kemi-Ann McGrath James McGuiness Lee Ann McHele Stacy McMinn : ■ i f Peter Milligan Edward Millman Michael Minunno ao seNons Patricia Mitchell Christopher Moccia Matthew Micieli Stacey Metz Dawn Monahan Victoria Mongiardo Frank Montwill Richard Moore Robert Moore TV« TEAM B1 Timothy Murphy Maria Mutino April Nerdolillo John Neal Roberto Negron Timothy O'Toole Kevin Ovens Brian Parpen THE TEAM S3 Ward O’Doherty Lisa Osborne Margaret O'Keefe Michael Orobello Lorine O’Rourke John Peltonen Timothy Perfetti Annmane Petkus Harry Poliviou Anthony Petrillo Maureen Powell Pat Powell Anne Pozsonyi Dina Pretter Laura Pritchard Anne Prudente William Purcell Michael Quinn Jeffrey Rabinowitz Martha Ramirez Kim Raskin T h6 THAArf SO n David Riall Keri Robertson 90 8ENOR8 Jeanette Rivera Angelo Rizzolo James Rogers i Julie Rose Timothy Reid William Reyes III Donna Ross Robert Rottkamp Matthew Rubenstem Matthew Rutig Lisa Sabarese James Sabo Maria Sanserverino Christine Santana THE TEAM 07 Christina Savino Kris Savold Lisa Scafordi David Schaefer Eliezer Sernas Max Saurel Carlo Scandaliato se SEMOP8 Susan Scarpantonio 4 Gina-Mane Schaefer Ruth Scherer Jill Schiereck Mark Schiller Kim Schloen Jeffrey Schmid Sondra Schreiner Jonathan Seigal TH6 TEAM 98 Patricia Smith Edward Snoeck Richard Soto ec SEMORS Christina Senia Bonnie Siefert Rosemarie Silletti Gail Sevennsen Christine Smith John Sperom Deena Spitaleri Steci Sprague Raymond Steib Robert Stamm Diane Stasko Richard Stremel k t Kearie Spear Steven Struhs Steven Suezo Lisa Talkechov Daniel Terpinian Keith Taub Nancy Taxis Jacqueline Taylor Karla Testini Timothy Tierney Amalie Torres Dawn Tropea Anthony Valentino Joy Verelles Regina Vecchione Lisa Villanell Leo Villierd TH TEAM 63 Dawn Votta Liza Wai Daniel Walsh Dons Wulff Avi Zlatin rue team es Sean Wingerten Richard Winwood Satomi Yamamta mm Roseanne Zanfardino WAPM 07 WAPM UPS es Dan-O got the treatment! An old proverb states the longest journey begins with the first step. Your long journey has come to an end. graduation 1905. It began in nursery school and has progressed year after year. I had the pleasure of joining your trek when you were in junior high. In fact. I have pictures on the wall of my office which show that some of you went to Holland. Otta- wa. Spam and Boston on school trips. Goals were set and reached one by one. Now the time has come to begin the next journey. A sort of round trip ticket if you will, only this time it is career oriented. Architects, en- gineers. programmers, secretaries, en- vironmentalists and more. This is the journey that counts. You'll go to college, get married, raise a family, pay taxes and in general reap what you have sown as a student at Division Avenue High. Certainly you could have done more and prepared more thoroughly in your last four years. On the other hand you've got some good memories to be sure. I'm pleased that I was a part of your journey and proudly include your years at Division as a part of my own career. To the Class of 1 905 I say. Thanks! I’ve got some very good stories to tell about to the class now in nursery school, the Class of 1 999. You’ll be the good old days to them. Ronald Zoia — Assistant Principal Dear Graduates. Now that you have graduated from high school, it is my hope that your every experi- ence. especially every mistake, every fault, every difficulty conquered, becomes a step- ping stone to the better and higher things of life. It is only through these experiences that you now make life worth living and thereby achieve success. My very best wishes for success in whatev- er you undertake. 80 AOMWSTnATQOS MANAGER Dear Graduates. Tradition states that there should be a very special relationship between a newly appointed principal and the first class that graduates since his appointment. Although this happens to be true, the relationship developed many years ago when you first entered Division Avenue High School. Your class immediately earned a reputation of co-operation and sincerity. In ev ry activity your class undertook, it always was entered with gusto and finished with success. We knew that we could count on you to produce a large banner for Homecoming, that you would be a fierce competitor in Pride Week, that you would have a successful Junior Prom and Ski Weekend and that all of your fund-raising activities would be fruitful. In your Senior Year. I counted heavily upon you to set a good example for the entering Freshman which you did with pride. I can’t tell you the number of times that your co- operation and advice helped make this an extremely rewarding year for me and the entire school. Over the years many friendships have developed between you and your fellow classmates. Though you may travel in many different directions, nurture and cultivate these friendships and hopefully they will last a lifetime. Beiieve in yourself. You alone know how much you have worked to attain grades. You alone know that if you had worked harder, you would have achieved more. Look into yourselves clearly by not blaming others and ask whether you could have done more. Then, set your goals for the stars and fulfill them. May you always be blessed with good health and happiness. Please keep in touch with us and always feel welcome to come back and visit us to share your success or to help you with concerns. May God Bless the Graduating Class of 1 085. Robert Henson, Mr Sobeneki S.A.D.D. Students Against Drunk Driving is an organization with a goal that is recognized as one of the most important to young people today. Teenagers must be made more aware of the danger involved in mixing drinking and driving. The statistics have proven what a killer such a combination is and how raising the drinking age has cut into the deaths incurred by drunk driving. This year's organization, ably led by Ms. Jackie Levine, has tried to educate the students here in High School through distribution of pamphlets, discussions in health classes and an assembly for the student body. The organization brought attention to itself by winning a pnze m this year's Homecoming Parade for the most original float. It depicted a damaged car with containers of alcoholic beverages on strings. The implication was obvious to all and had a fine impact. It is indeed a very worthwhile organization. i The Audio Visual Club video tapes, records, and does lighting and sound for all the different assemblies and shows the D.A.H.S. has. This year their biggest event was the student exchange. Through the Spanish Heritage Exchange Program, two students were able to come to Levittown to live with host families, attend classes at Division and make new friends. Having them here has enabled all the students at Division to be exposed to foreign ways. They have allowed all of us to learn about a foreign culture. The Seniors, along with the rest of the school, are areteful that we could spend this year with them. Julian Machlnbarrana, a native of San Sebastian arrived in Levittown on September 1 5th. Just as we welcomed Julian to our school with open arms, the Gorman family too welcomed him into their home. His decision to come to America was based on his desire to learn about the Ameri- can way of life’ . He seemed to easily adapt to the D.A.H.S. environ- ment. He was a well-liked member of the Inte- grated Studies Class, as well as an asset to the Varsity Soccer Team. We hope that Julian will always remember the new friends he found at Division and the many happy experiences he shared with them. Ivan Cantos, a native of Madrid, came to Levittown on December 1 Bth. after having spent some time in Pennsylvania. He. too. easi- ly assimilated to the D.A.H.S. environment. He particularly enjoyed his physics and his art classes here, at Division. Ivan en- joys sports and he was a member of our wrestling team. Outside of school, he enjoys skiing, polo, motor- bike racing, and hunting. We hope Ivan enjoyed his stay m Levittown as much as the Zwerling family and the students at D.A.H.S. enjoyed having him here. 'UUM' 89 ARISTA CLUB In its efforts to stress academics. Division Avenue High School has formed an Arista Club. This club requires chat a 90 average be main- tained. It's purpose is to en- courage academic excellence. As a young organization. it‘s members have already reg- istered for the National Social Studies Olympiad and are in- terested in participating in Law Day. sponsored by the Bar Association of Nassau County. Although Arista is small and still in its infant stage, the en- thusiasm of its members more than compensates for these shortcomings. In the spring, the club is hoping to visit Lincoln Center for one of its fine cultural programs. StSnOmg (L to R) Kim Yost. Kalmar-. Lyon Gnspn- Willm nn. Dawn Tnooss. STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE is a phrase that was heard a lot through these past years and practiced by the Class of 1 9B5 Our goals may have been different, but we all seemed to have had the same views. When something had to be done, we gave 1 OO percent — that's all anyone could have asked for. By working with this class, whether it was at a sporting event or an important meeting. I found that when everyone pulled together and gave 1 OO per- cent. things worked. That's why this class is so unique. We always strived to do our best. Though time and faces may change, and new experiences occur, we al- ways have these goals at heart. These days have gone by so fast and we all must face new experiences in life. We can look back at these, our high school years, with smiles and great memories knowing that we all tried to make them special in our own way. These have been some of the best years of my life. I hope you enjoyed them as much es I did. GOOD LUCK TO ALL Susan Duffy KICKLINE Members: Theresa Baraneiio. Karen Berman, Amy Best — Asst. Captam. Beth Brennan. Dana Clements. Amy Dysko. Anne Heely. Finishing 1 0 6 overall. 0-3 m American League D . and qualifying for the American League Nassau County Soccer Play-Offs was indeed a tremendous accomplishment for the Varsity team. The Dragon booters actually went through two seasons in one this year. Prior to the arrival of foreign exchange student Julian Machimbarnena, the team was struggling in its efforts to score goals. The Dragons started with a 4-0 win over Holy Trinity but then managed to win only one of their six games. That win came from a 4-3 victory over league foe. Valley Stream Central. During that period, the Dragons fell to a dismal 1 -3 record and play-off chances looked bleak. In addition to Julian. Gerry Armengau (goalie), joined the team. He provided much needed stability in the goal. Together with Julian, Gerry, and a renewed team spirit, the Dragons turned a dismal atart :nto virtually a champion season. The Dragons went on to win their next eight out of nine games for a 9-3 record and 2nd place. Outstanding Seniors for the Dragons this year were: Gerry Armengau (G). Andy Atkins (HB). Hugh Brown (HB). George Delgiomio (FB). Co-Captain. Greg Eatz (F), Julian Machimbarrena (F), Mike Quinn (FB). Jimmy Rogers (HB F). Max Saurei (F). Dan Walsh (G). and Avi Zlatin (F). pcixiens oocs i a© TENNIS Our tennis team was very competitive this season despite being placed in a very tough league. The team defeated Farmmgdaie once and Calhoun twice. They lost several matches to formidable teams by one game. The team boasted some of the best 1 st sin- gles players in the county. Trecey Cook finished the season with an impressive 9-3 record in singles competition. Seniors Anne Marie Petkus, Setomi Yami- nita. Pat Powell, and Sondra Schreiner will be miseed next year. Juniors Jean Mane Kyte. Laura Scheidle. Jenny Senterly, Pam Valerie. Mary Ann Nash, and Tracey Cook provide a promising nucleus for next year's team. ioe ATML nc« Girls’ Varsity Soccer This year the Girls Varsity Soccer Team was moved up to a stronger, nnore competitive division as a result of the success they attained in the 1 904 season. Despite a record this year of 3-9, the girls considered this a successful season because only two of the fifteen girls were seniors. Seniors Terri De- Santis and Colleen Limerick led the teem as captains and were consi- dered two of the best players in Nas- sau County. Gerry won the Nassau County toumment and was there as the Nassau County representa- tive at the state tournament in Syracuse on March 1st S 2nd. Ten thousand spectators witnessed an impressive Armengeu win 23-A and A-3 on the first day of competition. On the second day. Gerry was on fire as he crushed hie semi-final opponent with a pin in fifty-five seconds. He then went on to the ceremonious finals where he met the defending Section I champion. Gerry jumped out ahead to a 5-0 lead before Taylor came storming back with a 4 point move. The members of the class had numerous opportunities to contribute to Division's two largest publications. Some students contributed articles about sports, movies, school events, and current interest stones. They submitted their best photographs, puzzels, and ideas for the Flame. The staff members who worked on Perspectum also had vaned jobs. Involvement ranged from assisting in the sorting, and distribut- ing of senior portraitures, to soliciting ads and boosters, to photog- raphy.
