I hear laughter of days gone by. 6 9 And I hear the outside world — calling me, Calling me to plot my destiny. 10 II And I hear the voices of yesterday fading, Through the halls I walk. 14 And I feel the beauty of — Memories of yesterday. With this dedication the class of 1981 would like to show their thanks and appreciation to a man who is interested in helping others. Mr. Tarantelli has been an educator in Levittown for 26 years. He shows his devotion to the students of Division Ave- nue by supervising a work-study program. This program enables students to work part-time and receive school credit. Along with finding students jobs he teaches a class that prepares students for the business world. He shows them how to fill out job applications, and how to prepare for job inter- views. You would think that this was enough work for one man. but that does not stop Mr. Tarantelli. For the past 20 years he has been putting his life on the line instructing the driver education course at Division Avenue. Mr. Tarantelli, the class of 1981 thanks you for being an understanding, devoted and caring man. With teachers like you on the school faculty and future students of Division Avenue will continue to learn and grow. A great deal of time and effort is involved. Pro- ducing a book that is meaningful to all of us is hard but with much class involvement this is a reasonable goal. This year has been better than most on class participation due to the addition of the Publication course. Those who were not involved in the making of this yearbook will never realize the amount of time that was put into its production. I will try to demonstrate. Beginning in May, Senior portrait schedules were made, photos were taken. Upon their return, reading of negatives and numbering the proofs were done. The proofs were then put into envelopes and were ready for distribution. Orders were then taken. By acting as our own photo studio the profits derived from the Senior portraitures reduced the price of the book substantially. While all this was happening the preliminary page plan was completed. Staff meetings brought deci- sions of the theme and dedication. Layout techniques were taught and copy goals were discussed. Rough layout, final layouts and copy plus special instructions are included in the procedure. Photos are incorporated to rough layouts. Finals are then made accomo- dating the photos. This procedure is done for each page. Tagging and numbering the photos then artwork follows along with the typing of the copy. I'd like to extend my appreciation to those who have dedicated their time and talents to produce this yearbook. Editor in Chief. THE HOMECOMING On November 1, 1980, the sun was shining brightly as we had our first Homecoming since 1973. We started the day off with a spirited parade. Each organization made a banner re- presenting their club. The prize for the biggest banner went to the Junior Class. The Sopho- more Class won the prize for most creative banner. Holding the banners high in the air we were led down Division Avenue by five spark- ling cars. In each was one of our five Home- coming finalists, driven by their escort. Our Homecoming candidates from left to right Patty Wilson. Patti Tynan, Tracy Reid, Laurie Davis. Carolyn Compton At half-time we had the crowning of our Homecoming Queen. The proud winner was Patti Tynan. There was also a colorful balloon launch. The sounds of the band playing “On Division” was heard in the background. With a final victory score of 6-0 over Great Neck South, wc all looked forward to the Homecom- ing dance planned for that evening. As wc en- tered the doors at eight o'clock, we heard the sweet sounds of Sam, our disc jockey. The gym was festively decorated with our school colors. On the walls we hung the banners made for the parade. The dance, organized by the Senior Class was a big hit. As an overall view of the day, we had great weather, the second victory for our football team, our first Homecoming Queen in years, and a successful dance. It will always be a day to remember. BLOOD DRIVE Jocelyn Cardoza — registering Patty O’Brien having her blood pressure checked. 70 Chris Miller On December 17, 1980, the Student Government held its annual blood drive. We were all very proud and pleased at the number of people who decided to donate. Although some students were not able to contribute, we would like to thank them for their time, effort, and thoughtfulness. This years blood drive had more donors than the previous year, which made it a great success. A special thank you to everyone involved. Your kindness and support will always be remembered. Chris Miller. Patty O'Brien. Tricia Pfeifer — after donating SENIOR SKI TRIP Friends live forever Once again the seniors went on their annual ski trip. This year the trip was in Lenox. Mas- sachusetts. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, where we enjoyed two nights and three days of skiing, disco dancing, swimming (and party- ing). We had two full days of skiing, the first day at Bosquet Mountain and the second day at Jiminey Peak. Although many of the students that went on the trip had never been skiing before, many other students were very accomplished skiers. The trip was a huge suc- cess and a good time was had by all. Coming in for a landing Hey Jimmy, wanna skate? I can't bear to look! L p to no good Where is that______bus??? Can’t I take my skates off now? It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s George! Dance, dance, dance!! I don't know about this! JUNIOR PROM Prom King Gary Harding and Queen Lauren Carroll with class advisor Mr. Chiti, and Prom Princess Barbara Nizich and Prince Jim Miastkowski Much time and effort was involved in preparation for the Junior Prom. Months before, there were many decorating committee meetings. The long hours and hard proved reward- ing on April 16, 1980 as the Juniors entered the festively decorated gym- nasium. The music of the Gabis Brothers kept everyone out on the dance floor; mak- ing for a most successful evening. The Class of Eighty One voted its Prom King Gary Harding and Prom Queen Lauren Carroll. Jim Miastkowski and Barbara Nizich were voted Prince and Princess. All in all, the prom weekend was a lot of fun and help bring the class together. Integrated Studies is a popular and favorite class. It is run by Mr. Cestaro and Mr. Goelz. It is a place to learn new things and a place to meet new friends. Each person is required to do workshops, which are like oral reports. Talking on a subject that we’re interested in is fun. It helps us become closer and friendlier with each other. It makes us feel like one family. We come to know and understand ourselves and other people better. We have a community hour and suggestion box, a time we can say anything we feel. We go on trips and have holiday parties. The class is unique and special. It makes everyday great. CHEFS COURSE The Chefs Course at our school consists of both male and fe- male students. The class is taught by Mrs. Pacifico. We learn everything from tech- niques of measuring flour to the important subject of nutrition. We make many different types of foods from many different countries. They can range from the Japanese Yaki Soba to our own American Apple pie. Everyone in the class had a good time cooking new and dif- ferent things, and getting the chance to sample them. The class has a fun and friendly at- mosphere and we'd like to see it continue in the future. 81 FOOTBALL: 1980 — A SEASON OF EFFORT! The final record was 26 wins and 0 losses, and represented the first undefeated team in the history of Di- vision's girls sports. Outstanding coaching by Miss Vir- ginia Fleming and the skill and good attitude of the players contributed to the successful season. The team was well balanced defensively and offen- sively. Banners made by the team and enthusiastic fans helped psyche Divi- sion and discourage the opponents. The starters included seniors: Carolyn Compton (Captain), Kathy Leyden, Mary Neary, Dianne Pcri- bonis, Laura Roccotagliata and ju- nior Krissy Kelly. Skillful digging, setting, spiking, and serving done by the girls featured the winning season. All Conference honors went to Carolyn Compton, Krissy Kelly, and Mary Neary. County Champ !!! Possible players chose oth- er sports over Field Hockey, leaving the team with only a few experienced players. But because of the encour- agement of the coach, Mrs. Freeman, the inexperienced players built up their confidence in themselves and in their teammates. Although the team did not win a game, skills and abilities were achieved. Our congratulations to Arliene Bird for her fine ability as All-Star of the Field Hockey team and to Marty Aull, who scored the only goal of the season. The graduating seniors are Arliene Bird. Mary Ann (Marly) Aull, and Lucy Faggella. The tennis team enjoyed its second consecutive winning season. The highlight of the season was an upset win over perennial tennis power Southsidc. Barbara Nizich and Lauren Car- roll were standouts as first doubles. They won eight of the eleven matches. Being such good players, they made it to the second round in the Nassau County tournament. Special congratulations go to Lucy Fagella, Mary Ann Keller, Lauren Carroll, and Barbara Nizich who made All-Conference III. Marlene Munnclly was awarded the Red Let- ter, which goes to the player who best exemplifies what the Division athlete stands for and strives to achieve. The concluding record was six wins and five losses. The scores of the matches against the high schools fol- low: Wcstbury 6 — 1, Clarke 3 — 4, Plainvciw 5 — 2, Southside 4 — 3, Hempstead 7 — 0, Carey 5 — 2, Is- land Trees 7 — 0, Levittown Memori- al I 6. The Division Avenue girls basketball team did rather well this season and end- ed up with the same record as the pre- vious years. Outstanding individual per- formances and closely contested games highlighted the season. Double victories over Clarke and rival Levittown Memo- rial were especially satisfying. The graduating seniors on the Varsity Team are Mary Ann (Marty) Aull, Arliene Bird, Carolyn Compton, Kathy Leyden, and Mary Neary. Miss Sue Bailey has done a fine coaching job at Division for the last three years. Team members re- turning next year look forward enthusi- astically to the new season and an im- proved record. This year, because of the amount of eager students par- ticipation in athletics, there was a Girls Junior Varsity Basket- ball team. The team was coached by a newcomer to Divi- sion Avenue, Miss Karen Kuti- lek. Because of the determina- tion of the team and the encour- agement of their coach, they did their very best. They never lost their confidence in themselves and their players. 95 SOCCER TEAM The young soccer team started out in- experienced in the skills of this exciting sport. With great effort they worked to win and perfect their techniques. They had the strong will, but lacked the luck Although they went without a victory, they played persistently and never with- out confidence. We hope for a successful team next year. Leaving the team this year will be outstanding seniors David Bridgewood, Kyle Canavan, Michael Chiocchio, Chris Dyer. Michael Sabar- ese, Chris Miller, Mike Rothar, Dave Schmidt and Chris Watkins. It takes much time and patience to produce a good paper. This year we have a very enthusiastic staff. At the beginning of the semester we prepared a four page newspaper, but by the second half of the year we had expanded the paper to eight pages. The staff works happily together under the guidance of their advisor, Mr. Cestaro. He helps the staff prepare their articles and assists them when laying them out at the printers. We have produced a paper every month, with a style of writing that is enjoyed by everyone. Congratulations to the Flame Staff for being a part of a very unique and informative newspaper. 105 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Advisor: Mr. Faggioni Officers: President — Lauren Carroll Vice President — Carolyn Compton Secretary — Arliene Bird Treasurer — Patti Tynan JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Advisor: Mr. Di Napoli Officers: President — Vincent Solfer- ino Vice President — Thomas Sullivan Secretary — Jill Fulton Treasurer — Anthony Ro- mano 106 SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Advisor: Mr. Waggoner Officers: President — Patricia Fitzpa- trick Vice President — Linda Fel- ton Secretary — Cathy Di Ste- phano Treasurer — Desiree DeSocio FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA Advisor: Mrs. Garvey Officers: President — Jill Faicco Vice President — Donna Steinberg Secretary — Patricia Reisig Treasurer — Elaine Keegan Jr. President —Sue Loughran 107 Don’t you dare SUPER COOL Ready for take off Jolly green giant Little green sprout 109 I almost got it I can walk a straight line?? To put what is in one's heart into words is an extremely difficult task but I'll try. First, I cannot describe how proud I am of how you have con- ducted yourselves in your role as seniors. You have set an example for other classes to follow in your enthusiasm and school spirit not only in our extra-curricular activities and sports programs, but also in your conduct and activity in the classroom. You demonstarted leadership for underclassmen in being concerned for one another and for the school, in general, will long be remembered. Second, your enthusiasm is only surpassed by your willingness to participate in exercises of reason and good judgement. Your class was the first senior class to be included in the closed campus program. Yet, you not only made the best of a different set of circumstances, but also you used the opportunity of time to work on this yearbook, put out one of the best school newspapers ever, to organize pep squads and sign-making crews for our sporting events as well as a dozen or more other useful activities including home- coming day. When you first receive this yearbook and hurriedly rush to get all of your friends to sign it for you and some years later when you look at it again and remember the happy times you had at this school, the amount of happiness you derive is in direct proportion to the amount that you were involved. No matter what your plans are after your graduation, my message is “to be happy is to be involved with other people — both in their joys and sorrows. Finally, although I will personally miss you and hope that you find time to visit, I wish each of you the greatest success but more importantly, the greatest happiness. Mr. Robert Graham Dear Graduates of 1981: You are the first class required to earn a minimum of nineteen course credits and carry a full schedule during the senior year in order to graduate. Your graduation is a testimony to your ability to meet an increased challenge by assuming greater responsibility and accomplishments needs to be done to be successful. Your success was not only demonstrated by your academic ac- complishments but also by the outstanding achievements of the performing groups, athletic teams, school clubs and organizations. Sprinkled among the victories were those struggles and defeats which serve to sharpen your skills, your strengths, your endurance, your ability and even your confidence because you did not quit. As you made your life significant to yourself it became signifi- cant to others in Division Avenue High School. As you made your life significant toother in Division Avenue High School, it became to yourself. The time has come for you to make your life significant to yourself and to other in the world of living and learning beyond Division Avenue High School. The world is complexed and tangled. However, you have the capacity to be skillful enough, strong enough, courage enough, and determined enough to make your life and the lives of others mean- ingful and purposeful. The faculty and the other members of the staff join me in thanking you for the higher standards that you have established in Division Avenue High School and in extending best wishes for a successful future.
