It is the idea that each of us has but one life to lead, and it is up to us to make it count so that the world will be a bit better because we lived. Great thinkers from Aristotle to Malraux have said this in so many ways that I recommend it to each of our departing seniors. In our contacts with others, to live AND ACT with courage, with love, with honesty is to make our lives mean something, no matter how modest or great our eventual destiny may be. It makes no sense to deplore the state of the world, unless by living we have helped to change it for the better. Good education, like great art, possesses this underlying moral sense. Without overly stressing it, your teachers have tried to help you each become good, decent people who will indeed change the world for the bet- ter. And so, our hopes go with our seniors as they continue their life-educa- tion beyond our walls — that each life will become a victory for mankind. Dr. John L. IN THE DIVISION AVENUE HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM Presented through the courtesy of THE LEAGUE OP NEW YORK THEATRES AND PRODUCERS, INC. Hey Coach, we have an idea . . . That’s the way it all began back in September when several students of the Music Theater Workshop first approached me with the idea of presenting BROADWAY CABARET. They had worked out every little detail dur- ing the summer vacation and words were coming from their mouths so quickly that it was impossible to decipher what they were saying. The thing I had no trouble at all understanding was the enthusiasm and excitement which was bubbling over from within them. Basically, their idea was to prepare a series of carefully and thought out scenes from current Broadway shows and then present them in a unified fashion that would depict todays trends in American Musical Theater. Also, they wanted to do this on their own — including production, direction staging, choreography and costuming. In a very polite and tactful manner, they were, in essence, asking me to “supervise and allow them to put it all together. The look of joy that appeared in their eyes when I gave the go ahead is in itself a just reward. Little did my “Stage Struck Students (a name, by the way, they chose themselves) realize how much I agreed with their plan. What could be more beneficial to them and of more educational value than - learning by doing? It is one thing to follow instructions set forth by a director and yet another to give these directions yourself. The final product, the production itself, would be of secondary importance. Regardless of how successful a produc- tion may be to an audience, if the students in that presentation do not share in a learning experience then it is of no value other than to be an ego-booster to the director. The primary concern would be helping these students develop potentials and abilities that might never have surfaced; not only as performers on a stage, but as human beings who are learning to make their lives useful and productive — contributing whatever they possess to the society in which they live. As it turned out, there were many little details that had yet to be worked out; in fact, there were quite a few sizeable obstacles. I believe that many of our S.S.S. have never in their life worked so hard towards a common goal. And whether BROADWAY CABARET is a tremendous success or a resounding flop, it will be something that each one of our young men and women will remember as long as they live. From the audience's viewpoint, BROADWAY CABARET promises to be a highly entertaining evening of song and dance. We will all agree that even the best shows have their dull moments, but by selecting only specific scenes you can usually eliminate them. There has never been as much difficult and technical choreography included in one of our high school performances. The credit for this is given to Richard Connery, a twelfth grader with an enormous wealth of talent and through whose efforts and dreams this show has become a reality. To Richard, and to Monica Lawrence, I extend my sincere congratulations for a job well done. From the performer’s viewpoint, won’t you share in their fun, in their jubilance and in their learning? All of us, myself included, occasionally will generalize about those bad kids that always seem to give a poor reputation to all teenagers. They are the exception. Tonight, you will see the finest group of hardworking, considerate, responsible and cooperative teenagers to be found anywhere. Sit back, relax and share with us a night of musi- cal theater, which after all, is nothing more than a mutual communication of love between performer and audi- ence. Thank you for being here and supporting our ambitions. 115 John W. The team, led by veteran seniors: Tony Hamablet, Gary Weinger, Mike Balas and Howie Sherman, made an impressive show of teamwork and determination. COACH: Mr. Jordon Ml The 1976 year of the “Big Austerity,” found our team spending as much time raising funds as training to compete. Thanks to the efforts of responsible par- ents, hardworking runners and a resourceful coach the team was a success in both areas. The Harriers finished their season with a commendable 4-2 record. Despite injuries they finished 6th in the North Shore B” Championships. Sen- iors Ken Sherlock, John Austin, Bob Cassese and Paul Wulff earned their letters this year. Senior Allan Kilfoyle placed 2nd in the North Shore Championships, 7th in the Nassau County Meet, 10th in the State meet and 14th in the all encompassing New York Federation Meet. 142 Cross Country 144 Football COACH: Mr. Jewell The Blue Dragon football team was a young and enthusiastic group. Their over- all record does not give any indication of several of the games that were lost in the final minutes. This young team revealed its potential in the Memorial and South- side games. Division earned the Levittown championship by defeating Memorial 1 8-0. Tom Brown and Kevin Corbett earned All League honors. Kevin Corbett was also honored by being selected for the Grid Iron 44 team. 146 Basketball COACH: Mr. Krug The 1976-77 basketball season saw the Blue Dragons with a 6-12 overall record. The highlights of the season came with back to back wins over two of the league’s leading teams, Westbury and Roslyn. Leading the team in rebounds was Bob Aull, while Tom Watkins paced the way in most points and assists. Congratulations to all on a fine team effort. Softball COACH: Ms. Fleming V raw uno Tennis COACH: Ms. Brown 148 Hockey COACH: Ms. Freeman Volleyball 149 COACH: Ms. Moran Wrestling COACH: Mr. Winkle Under the guidance of new coach, Mr. Winkle, the Varsity wres- tling team finished with a record of 5-9. The team was led by co- captains Chris Shade and Steve Washio, and seniors Bob Cook, Brendan Fahey, Tom Gowan and Tim Lemily. Bob Cook and Tyrone Hughes both took first place medals in the annual MacArthur wres- tling tournament. Thanks to Mr. Winkle, the wrestling program shows promise for the years ahead. 152 155 Varsity Cheerleaders J.V. Her dedication to the students of this school has been greatly appreciated. Unfortunately for us, Mrs. Huenlich has chosen to retire at the end of this year. Besides teaching homemaking, she was also the advisor of the Future Homemakers of America since 1960. The past members of this club know what a fine job she did. She will be missed very much by all of us. We hope her retirement is all she wishes it to be. THANK YOU .v- IvllLLMAN rST Without you, this yearbook would not be. Your patience, dedication, and humor has been invaluable — thanks for caring THE PEOPLE WILL LIVE ON The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on. They will be tricked and sold and again sold And go back to the nourishing earth Tor rootholds, The people so peculiar in renewal and comeback, You can't laugh off their capacity to take it. The mammoth rests between his cyclonic dramas. The people so often sleepy, weary, enigmatic, is a vast huddle with many units saying: ”1 earn my living I make enough to get by and it takes all my time. If I had more time I could do more for myself and maybe for others. I could read and study and talk things over and find out about things. It takes time, I wish I had the time. Carl Sandburg 200
