Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1975 volume:

Why would a man want to take on the challenge of 365 pessimistic seventh graders, carry that heavy load of responsibility for six long years, suffer through their hardships, take the blame when their plans fail, expect no gratitude when they succeed, pull them through their years of growing pains, just so they could look back on those years with fond memories? Why would a man care so much as to do this for us? Such an extraordinary character exemplifies that which we all long for and yet so few attain. Words cannot truly express the feelings of a class towards the one person who has been the most integral part of its success. And so we, the Class of 1975, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Goelz, to whom we all owe so much. Friends by Elton John and Bernie Taupin I hope the day will be a lighter highway, For friends are found on every road. Can you ever think of any better way, For the lost and weary traveler to go. Making friends, for the world to see. Let the people know, you got what you need. With a friend at hand, you will see the light, If your friends are their then everything's all right. It seems to me a crime that we should age, These fragile times should never slip us by. A time you never can or shall erase, As friends together watch their childhood fly. Making friends, for the world to see. Let the people know, you got what you need. With a friend at hand, you will see the light, If your friends are there then everything's all right. A real friend shares your distress, your happiness; all your moods ... A true friend is a gift, never to be taken advantage of, never to be lost. And the understanding one human being can have for another is one of the most wonderful things you will ever find in the world. friend (frond), 1 person who knows and likes another. 2 person who favors and supports: She was a generous friend to the ptxtr. 3 person who belongs to the same side or group: Are you friend or enemy? friend less (frend'lis), without friends, friend li ness (frend'le nis), friendly nature; friendly action, friend Lv (frend'161 1 of a friend: 11 A real friendship begins where nothing is expected in return. 12 13 I once wasn't permitted to associate with your group. Air these make up the sum of human life; A dream within a dream, a wind at night Howling across the desert in despair, Seeking for something lost it can not find. enry Wadsworth Longfellow 23 MICHAEL ALLEN; J.H. Seven hundred helium filled balloons were launched at halftime of the Southside game. The winner's balloon landed in Amagansett, enti- tling that individual to a 12 portable TV set. Other balloons were report- ed to have landed on Shelter Island, Port Jefferson, Dix Hills and Coram. 75 Their hair was short and greasy. Their pants were ripped and most of them wore no shirts. If you weren't there, you'd think we were describing a gang from the fifties. For those of you who were in the gym on January 31, you'd know that you witnessed one of the most hilarious events of the year. For the first time the seniors and the faculty joined to- gether and beat the WGBB GOOD GUYS. This team struggled hard to defeat the DAHS BAD GUYS, but didn't succeed. All the teach- ers were cheered on except for Mr. Mertz, the ref, who was bombarded with lemons because of his obviously bad calls. The cheerleaders portrayed the true fifties with their pony tails wagging and their long skirts sagging. They cheered the team on in such a comical way that many of the fans stared in disbelief. All in all it was a good game with Mr. Geolz scoring the last two winning points. the wgbb basketball game 76 77 senior carnival The scene at the back parking lot was circus-like. There were large vans with all sorts of games and prizes. In the cafeteria there was a kissing booth, a sponge throw and a bowl pitching contest for gold- fish. Many seniors participated and it seemed like everyone had a great time. Special thanks are in order for the class officers, who stayed after closing to clean up and count money. And you don't mess around with Brad 78 The car wash in September was another FUN-Raising activity held by the Senior class. Seniors who were consid- ering to enroll in Driver Education were asked to drive all vehicles through the wash. No-Fault Insurance became effective the previous January. WHEW! Many a senior received his or her annual bath. Perhaps the title of this page should read: CAR STUDENT WASH GREAT FUN!!! I've never been to a topless club. It has broadened our hori- zons intellectually and enabled us and fif- ty other people to become the closest of friends. Those of you who have come in, whether to listen to a guest speaker or share in a workshop discussion have, I hope, felt the warmth and friendliness generated by the group. integrated I will always associate Integrated Studies with the Class of 75 because it was your frustrations and desire to learn which provided the inspiration for this program. 88 Mr. F. Goelz studies Integrated Studies is an experiment in open education, The atmosphere is free, leaving much room for the indi- viduals interests. Group workshops are set up on topics which are of interest to the students. There are workshops in psychology, religion, music and film making. Besides group workshops, individual projects are required. This gives the student a chance to really investigate those areas of study which interest him rather than follow the rigid, formal set up. The Integrated studies program is an attempt to find a curriculum that is both interesting and relevant yet struc- tured to cope with the needs of it's students. 89 ski trip We took off early Monday morning. Nobody could wait to get out of Levittown and be on their own. Once we got to Rocking Horse, there was not a moment of silence for the next three days. Everyone immediately got settled and went skiing or horseback riding. Those who didn't like the cold weather went swimming or started an early party. On Wednesday, it snowed — almost enough to let us stay another day. But unfortunately, we had to come home. The three day vacation will be a memory to cherish for all who went. Roberi raham Lawrence Lasker Eu ADMINISTRATIO Dear Graduates: The background for this senior year was quite unique. On the national scene both our President and Vice Presi- dent were appointees who reached office through an unprecedented chain of events. The economic picture was somewhat grim with lay-offs having considerable impact upon the economy. The feminist movement was significantly evident with New York State boasting its first lady Lieutenant Governor. Off-track betting found its way to Nassau and many of us were aroused over the prospec- tive of a betting parlor locating in May's shopping com- plex. Film productions seemed to reflect the economic scene by highlighting disaster epics: Earthquake and The Towering Inferno were outstanding box-office attrac- tions. Rock music underwent considerable change during this year. It would seem that the surrounding events would have a calamitous effect upon the class of 75 . Perhaps these events were instrumental in focusing student attention toward activities at school. We witnessed a group of out- standing seniors having a tremendous impact upon school spirit at Division. During our football season, these seniors engaged in leading the cheering which engen- dered a great deal of enthusiasm in the second half of the Memorial H.S. game. Their enthusiasm seemed to per- meate every activity including the co-ed volleyball games, those mixed matches on the golf course and the bowling alleys, the musical concerts, their ski trip and, of course, the incomparable Senior Variety Show. You have left us many fond memories of unusually socia- ble and friendly students whose class officers perfectly exemplified the personality of an outstanding senior group. Your accomplishments exhibited a balance that attracts success in each athletic and scholastic endeavor. His warmness and enthusiasm toward all his students will long be remembered and appreciated. Tarantelli 130 Coach — Mr. Wright There was a great deal of sportsmanship on the soc- cer team this year. They had great knowledge of the sport and they enjoyed playing. Consistant players were S. Borelli, D. Botvinik, j. DelGiornio, B. Zarb, J. Maloney, J. Baranello, T. Brown, M. Danese, and J. Massaro, who received a Red Letter. 131 girls hockey Coach — Miss Garlick This year's field hockey team that included elev- en seniors, faced a difficult schedule. However, with the scoring of Carolyn Hegquist and Pat Neary, assists from Kim Cuomo and the goal- tending of Sherry Parker, the team had many close, exciting games. The team's unity and en- thusiasm made for an enjoyable season. Other seniors on the team were Lorraine Mucillo, Laura Anderson, Kathy Heraghty, Kathy Carr, Maureen Reilly, Mary VanHoogenstein, and Merry Schneider. 132 This year's team welcomed Ms. Fleming, their new coach, to the Division coaching staff. She gave this team a new, fresh outlook. The team included five seniors: Kim Cuomo, Pat Neary, Carolyn Hegquist, Maureen Reilly, and Laura Anderson. The varsity finished with a 4 and 7 record. The JV had a winning record of (7-4). We have high hopes for next year's team. With the return of Ms. Fleming and this year's juniors and sophomores, 1976 looks bright. volleyball Coach — Ms. Fleming 133 HATS OFF TO Big Blue In the nineteen years that Coach Jewell has been at Division, his teams have compiled a very impressive record. In 1957 his freshman team went undefeat- ed. In 1960, they won their first cham- pionhip. Another championship was won in 1966. The 1969 team went unde- feated. Since that year, the record has been 43-7. In the last three years, the team has been undefeated in league competition. Mr. Jewell was Coach Of The Year in 1960 and President of The Coaches Association in 1972. Congrat- ulations to Coach Jewell. CONFERENCE SIX CHAMPS Once again, the 1974 football season was quite successful. Our Blue Dragons earned the Nassau Conference 6 Championship. In a close fight with Carey, (12-6) we lost the championship game between Conference 5 6. The league record boasts 8 wins in 8 games. This is our 4th undefeated season in league play. Valuable players included half back Harold Wasserman, who gained over 1000 yards this season, Pete Chiarelli, Larry O'Leary, Bob Ley- den, and Wayne Corrigan. Underclassmen Bob Bonniello and Gary Washio aided with remarkable varsity debuts. All league honors went to Bob Boniello, John Duggan, Ken Hublitz, Bob Leyden, Tom Rhatigan and Harold Wasserman. Leyden and Wasserman made the Gridiron 44 team and Wasserman made the All-County team. 136 basketball Although the Basketball team was not too successful this year, they have high hopes for the future. Their coach, Mr. Krug, worked hard in organizing the team, and it has greatly improved the team's spirit. Seeing that the team is comprised of Sophmores and Juniors, the Senior class would like to wish them success in the coming year. 137 This year the Varsity Cross Country Team led by Seniors Chris Curry, Ron Bracco, and Rick Blankmeister regained some of it's past glories by placing second in Division 111, second in the North Shore Athletic League and racing to third place in the Nassau County Champion- ships. In the process, juniors Fred Lipsky and Sophomore Allan Kilfoyl qualified for the State Meet. Our top runners are returning next year to be joined by an exceptional group of Junior High Harriers. The prognosis of Cross at Division is the reason for Coach Pivnick's smiling face. Coach - Mr. Pivnick 138 cross country 139 spring track Returning seniors are forming the nucleus of a very good team. Pat- rick Powell in the shot and disc cir- cles, John Maloney over the hur- dles, Ron Bracco and John Duggan at their specialties will be the key to a good season. Other important squad members are Paul Glandt and Fred Manney in the dashes, Fred Lipsky at the distance and Tom Gallagher in the high jump. Absent From Team Pic- tures: Field Hockey Maureen Reilly Carolyn Hegquist Lorraine Micillo Mary Van Hoogenstyn Volleyball Maureen Reilly Carolyn Hegquist Seniors on Tennis: Carolyn Maureen Reilly Kathy Carr Holly Yaeger Sherry Parker badminton One of Division's newer teams is the Badminton Team. The team has greatly improved since last year, thanks to Mrs. Casey's coaching. Their enthusiasm showed by their num- ber of winnings. Outstanding players are Nancy Rydlewski and Carol Hull. 144 Coach — Mrs. Casey The Division wrestling ream had a good season, finishing second in their league. Headed by coach, Dick Wright their record was 6-6. The team was led by seniors: Steve Borrelli, Tom Giordano, Clay Cullen, Ron Bracco, John Duggan, and Mark Salustro. mm wrestling Coach-Mr. Wright baseball The 1975 Baseball team is looking forward to another fine sea- son. Finishing in second place in 1974, they will be striving to win their division. Returning this season are the following se- niors: Wayne Corrigan, Richard Deegan, William Euell, Timo- thy Greene, Charles Lupardo and Tom Policano. 147 lacrosse Despite losing 13 starters from last year, Coach Bob Waters predicts another fine season. The defending North Shore Champs will be headed by team captain, Bob Leydon. Seniors on the team will include Bill Russell, Tommy Constantine, Phil Trzcinski, Tim Brown, Tom Rhatigan, Dave Boofy Botfvinik, Steve Borrelli, Chris Hopkins, John Tirone, Rich Tuccillo, Larry O'Leary, Fred Manney, Ron Buddy Dalbora, Willy Hupfer. 148 149 varsity cheerleaders Senior Cheerleaders: Carolyn Hegquist, Kathy Carr, Sherry Parker, Lorraine Micillo, Karen Weinbrecht 150 j.v. cheerleaders 151 Look out Islanders here we come. 152 ice hockey Despite refusal by the district to support this team, it has become a reality. Ice hockey is the fastest growing sport on Long Island and Division is represented by Coach Mancini and a fine group of players. They com- piled an overall record of 11 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties. Your concern and dedication helped, not only with the publication of our yearbook, but it also strenghtened our depths of responsibility. We learned how to be more critical of our own work, and more appre- ciative of others. In the future, we'll be able to work closely with oth- ers, and you have made that job more easier to handle.
