Yet we have found such a person, whose extraordinary character exemplifies that which we all long to be and yet few attain. And so we, the Class of 1970, dedicate our yearbook to you Mr. Pavlikowski, in hope that this tokqn of our appreciation will in times of doubt restore your faith in us. Individuality: a wild and wonderful word! A word expressing the beauty of a human being and the freedom of a person's spirit. A word changing stereotypes into diversities, blacks and whites into shades and names on a list into people. A word turning a politician into a Kennedy, a singer into a Dylan and a person into you. Perspectum 1970 is the develop- ment of this concept. Recorded on the following pages are the thoughts of many Seniors on individuality. In spite of the fact that a book is con- sidered a unit of thought, the wide variety of styles, tones and moods presented here can only lead you as a reader to the conclusion that this yearbook is individuality. Tu be in a crowd, yet not of it To accept other's ideas, yet live by your own To know yourself, to be yourself To live your life to the fullest Thus is individuality Chris McCarthy To be one among many, just part of a crowd is fine for some people But somewhere inside me is a voice saying. God only made one like me, one life to be lived as only I choose — nothing less Karen S wistak We are many people Yet one with a common bond Now we break away A nd each decides which road is his. A ndrea St ager IF IT’S YOUR BAG — DO IT! Jeel individuality can be defined as, “If its your bag do it. To be an individual is to do and think as you like, not as somebody wants you to. Doug Kurdziel Having a bag. Carrying it well. Digging yourself. Steve Jacobs Six years in school was a lot Jor me. I've learned a lot front A to Z. But there is one thing I just learned to see. And that’s the importance of Individuality. John Moran 11 Be not a carbon copy . . . Nancy Moga Have your own thoughts and ideas . . . Janet Reilly Believe in what you think is right . . . Mary Wed in Don’t crumble under unconstructive criticism. Ken Mancino 12 14 Fulfillment In a never ending search for ourselves we must first fulfill. Fulfillment begins with the basic individual: his approach to himself, to his friends and to the world. A person cannot truly function as a whole until he has found himselj. He must look and learn and find the individual that exists within him. From this comes the concept of individualism. An individual is truly one- self. He thinks for one. lives for one hut he must learn to relate to his envi- ronment and to the world around him. The future allows time for this search a time only we as individuals can take advantage of. How much one grasps for. depends only on how much he wants from life. The time and the opportunities are endless. It is our peroga- tive to reach for them and hold on to what we attain. And so. we as individuals must go into the world armed with whatever knowledge we have. We must give unselfishly to mankind whatever we have to offer and hope that we have bettered the world in some small way. And by this we will have truly fulfilled. Gough CONTESTS Faculty Seniors Between the Lines Organizations Sports Advertisements FACULTY Dear Seniors, The theme for your yearbook — Individuality Through Experience — seems to me to be particularly appropriate at a lime when we are witnessing vivid, dramatic and, at times, forceful expressions by large groups within our society. It would appear individual expression and accomplishments have been relegated to secondary importance. Ironically, this situation exists despite the fact that it is still the individual — individu- als of many types assuming a great variety of responsibilities — who is held accountable for the success or failure of many of our public and private institutions. Group responsi- bility is still not a part of our leadership expectations. Despite the current trend to “submerge” the individual within the group, there is ample evidence that individuals still continue to contribute handsomely to our society — in med- icine, politics, education and the business world. Reflect on your past six years at Division Avenue and enumerate all the individual contributions which have enhanced our growth as a school. Many of you have been those very individuals. To each of you we owe a debt of gratitude. It is my fondest wish that you continue to make important contributions to your fami- ly, other schools, places of employment, governmental agencies and to society. The prog- ress of civilization and of our nation may be viewed as the sum total of countless individu- al contributions. They are truly that necessary. On behalf of the faculty, administration and your fellow students, I extend our best wishes for continued success, an abundance of good health and immeasurable happiness. CHESTER ZDRODOWSKI 67 because danny zuckerman lived to question my explorer you sought the mystery of life, unanswerable questions answered, you touched my soul with your warmth your truth, for you knew of the light, you spoke of a change in you and death spread it's wings and flew to you teacher, even your death was a lesson in truth, thank-you for giving of your strength. Here in the self is all that one can know; Beauty, all the wonder, all the power. John Masefield 69 On a cold and breezy October 25th, 11 girls anx- iously awaited the crowning of the Senior Athletic Queen. This contest was actually the culmination of each girl's high school participation in the Athletic Program. The winner and the two princesses were de- cided upon by popular vote of the student body. The voting itself this year seemed to be especially difficult as each girl seemed to be as qualified as the next. Division is No. 1. “I knew it all along,” Division High football coach Jerry Jewell said. “I didn’t want to say it for the papers.” Division had just beaten Wantagh, 38-12, here Saturday before over 5,000 fans. Both teams were unbeaten (7-0) before this non- Ipainie windnn camp Neither srhnol had ever middle on the conversion to give Division a 22-6 halftime lead. “The linemen just started to click,” Burzo said later, “and we gained f've or s'x vards every time. They won the eight games for us.” The linemen—Paul Beswick, Dennis Crau, Ken Mancino, Warren C.off, Paul Roberts, Kevin Eatz and Kelly—wore Wantagh’s smaller defen- sive line down and enabled Division to gain 146 yards on 44 rushing plays. But Wantagh didn’t give up without a fight. XVUKe IVelly gave Division f p tt-b lead. W u .ivin Lciiau oppncu uiai |jici uic uu me Then, Frank Russell returned Divicirm’s defensive line. They dropped Bogan for losses kickoff 42 yards to the Divisic Vcirsity Footboll mes. And they shut off Brancato, who had like the momentum was turning dock again, cut for 768 yards in Wantagh’s first seven on the first play, Moran intercepted Bogan’s long pass intended for Russell at the five. Moran went on to limit Russell, who had caught nine TD passes this year and grabbed 22 passes for 468 yards, to one catch good for 11 yards. Division opened a 14-6 lead midway in the second period when it drove 58 yards in 10 plays, with Ed Burzo scoring from six yards out behind fullback George Boniello’s block, two clutch catches by Kelly, on passes from Ratliff, kept the drive going. A 55-yard end-around run by Gary Bam- mann set up the next touchdown late in the second period. It gave Division the ball on Wan- tages seven. On the next play, Burzo took a pitchout and outraced Bogan to the left comer games. Brancato gained 41 in 11 carnes. “We’ve met guys like Brancato before,” Fer- rari said. We weren’t scared or anything.” Barnett said, “The whole line got in there quick. If one guy got him first, everybody else came up to finish him off. And if he (Bogan) rolled out, the backs came up quick to help out.” And now, Division, the North Shore III champion, had its first unbeaten season. How did it feel? “It’s radioactive, man,” Burzo said. “It’s an honor. I had a feeling at the first practice it was going to be this way. I just knew it. I’m very proud. It’s just like one, happy family. Just like Green Bay—that’s how I feel. All those little kids were out there shaking our This year’s Varsity Football Team was able to achieve some- thing that no other team in the school's history has been able to do. They finished the season with a perfect 8-0 record, which not only gave them the North Shore III Championship, but also the § 1 rating of best team in the county by Newsday. Led by Captain Mike Pascale, the team started their winning streak by over-coming their well-known opponent. Hicksville. They ended the season on a triumphant win. by beating the then 1 rated Wantagh team by a score of 38-12. Individual honors went to 7 All-League players: Ed Burzo. Dennis Grau. Tom Ferrari. Mike Pascale. Russ Ratliff. George Bonniello and Jack Moran. In addition. Ed Burzo was named to the Grid Iron 44 Team and was picked as All-County by the Long Island Press and Daily News. Dennis Grau was also named to the Grid Iron 44 Team, selected as All-County Center by the Press and named to the second team of All-Long Island by Newsday. Tom Ferrari was picked as a member of the Grid Iron 44 Team and the second All-County Team by the Press. A Bridesmaid No Longer, Division Wins at Albany Special to Newsday Albany—For four years Levittown Division High’s cross-country team played a brides- maid’s role in Class C competition. This year the team finally got its chance to go to the New York State championship—and made the most of it. Division won the Class C state championship Saturday on the first try. The team had been Nassau runner-up four times, then this year won its first county title. Ward Melville of Suffolk, was Long Island’s other team winner at the meet in Albany. In sectional (county level) competition, the state meet was all Long Island, with Section Eight (Nassau) winning in Classes A and C, and Section 11 (Suffolk) taking the Class B intersectional title. A pair of Suffolk runners, Vin DeRosa of Whitman and Craig MacDonald of Ward Mel- ville, won individual championships in Class A and Class B respectively. DeRosa, whose coach calls him “Mr. Crass-country,” had the best time on the 2.5-mile course, covering it in 12:03.7 The old course mark of 12:47 was broken in each of the three divisions, which are based on size of schools. Bob Bush of Wheatley did best among Nassau runners in individual competition, fin- ishing third in the Class C race. Traditional powerhouse Sewanhaka was third in Class A team competition, behind second-place Linden- hurst. Wantagh was the Class B runner-up, be- hind Ward Melville. The order of finish for Levittown Division was: Chester Czdrowski (ninth). Bob Tennen- baum (10th), Kevin Lyons (12th), Bob Flinn (22nd) and Lance Cullen (31st). The 84-point total turned in by the North Shore III and North Shore champs was the best of the day. 147 148 Varsity Bowling Coach: Mr. D.
