Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1967 volume:

The beginning of our high school years was filled with uncertainty and confusion. What did the future hold for us? What pains and sorrows, joys and happiness, responsibilities and privileges lay ahead? The call to adventure, the exploration of new worlds, the recognition of abilities and challenging interests all sweetened this uncertain feeling. The glow of pride warmed this sensation and the throb of tear disturbed it. Our moods ranged from the heights of pleasure to the darkest depths of depression and thus we travelled through these past four years. DIVISION AVENUE HIGH SCHOOL U.F.S.D. W . DIVISION AVENUE HIGH SCHOOL WALTER M. YANNETT. PH. D.. Principal October 14, 1966 Dear Graduates of 1967: There are few times in our hurried lives when we pause long enough to see where we have been and how much further we have to go to meet our expectations. Our contemporary world places a tremendous burden on our use of time—leaving little for retrospection. As you flip through the pages of this Yearbook, reflect on your past achievements, review your failures and resolve that your future must profit from your past. The theme of this Perspectum deals with the changing moods and atti- tudes of your class—from the day that you entered this building six long years ago to the present. Although there are those who maintain that change is a barometer of progress, it should be clear that there are qualities that resist change. Fortunately, the enthusiasm for learning and striving for accomplishment did not change with this class—it deepened. The demand for knowledge accompanied by a development of character and integrity did not change—it heightened. But we must admit a decided physical transformation has taken place. With growth you have also added the qualities of maturity and wisdom. It is the wishes of all who have had the pleasure of sharing in your educational growth that you go forth and continue to grow in all your future pursuits. Continue to train your minds to think, to reason, explore, and to be fair. In the name of the faculty, administration and student body may I extend my most heartfelt congratulations on your outstanding record of achievements and best wishes for the many happy years ahead. Sincerely, sty Walter M. Yannett, Ph.D. Principal LEVITTOWN PUBLIC SCHOOLS • LEVITTOWN, N .V. WMY:fb His concern for us— Our interests, our ideas, our need for knowledge. His loyalty and encouragement give us pride in Ourselves and in our school. His services are intangible. He shares with us part of himself And as much as he is dedicated We are dedicating— DEDICATION It is not often that a person is gifted with the ability to convey knowledge, stimulate interest, and arouse curiosity in a student. We, the Class of ’67, believe that you have demonstrated these rare qualities throughout your long teaching career. With this gift, you have challenged the minds of your students and they have willingly accepted this chal- lenge. Therefore, Mr. Murphy, we dedicate our Yearbook to you. CENTRAL OFFICE Board of Education Mr. Victor E. Buck, President Mrs. Angela C. Rubino, Vice President Mr. Bernard Morgenstern, Secretary Mr. Thomas C. Elsbree Mr. Vincent Finneran Mr. Joseph Good Mr. Max Zimny Board of Supervisors Dr. Thomas Boegal Mr. Louis McCormick Mr. Charles Sukman Mr. Louis R. Pucci 11 Freshman year was an awkward stage in our lives as high school students. The transition from childhood to maturity was more difficult and a more gradual process than we had ever dreamed. We found ourselves in situations where the responsibilities were menial and yet we had great adjustments to make. We were obligated only to ourselves os students. We adopted an orphan—an added responsibility but by no means a burden. We willingly accepted this task and continually re- minded one another to bring in the money to support him. We did not actually have to feed, clothe and shelter him. We helped, and this was a stepping-stone towards our maturity and his growing-up. In our Sophomore year, we became more deeply involved with all the social and academic aspects of school. We were no longer standing on the outside looking in. We could participate in many extra-curricular activities and we had our choice of many different and interesting subjects. We took on new responsibilities. Our card sale, our first money-raising effort, was a success. We also started the precedent of an annual 'Battle of the Bands.' i AVMV II 3W1 ‘CAMELOT RELIVED The Junior year brought forth many of our changing moods and attitudes. This year was to be determined by the experience of the past or from those that would come in the future. Realizing the importance of this year, we worked harder at reaching our goals. The success of our magazine sale and Camelot , our junior prom, were achievements to be proud of and indicated our growing knowledge and maturity. JUNIOR CLASS 17 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Mr. K. Schools Movie WHOM On Theft of Statue Of Liberty Stolen Special to The New York Times LEVITTOWN. L. L, March 2 —A thief who walked off with a batch of film early this week is probably wondering what that movie of high school stu- dents kidnapping the Statue of Liberty is all about. The senior class of Division Avenue High School here was making the movie, called “For Whom the Torch Bums. They hoped to sell $1 admissions to its April showing to finance the senior prom. The 600 feet of 16-mm color film was taken from a parked delivery car at 681 Quincy Street in Brooklyn Monday about 6:30 P.M. The movie is a spy-spoof in which Russia kidnaps the Statue of Liberty to blackmail the United States into abandoning Berlin. The film's writer-director- producer, 17-year-old Kerry Mc- Donnell. who also plays a lead- ing role, fears he would have difficulty raising the $100 nec- essary to reshoot the film and even more difficulty getting permission again from the Na- tional Park Service to work at the statue. Dr. Walter M. Yannett. prin- cipal at the school, said the students particularly the 27- member cast, were “most dis- heartened over the theft. TORCH BURNS Alexander Hiseman. presi- dent of the Chemtrol Corp. of Stamford, Conn., the processors from whose truck the film was taken along with 300 rolls of home movie film and slides, is offering a $100 reward for re- turn of his property. 97 98 99 Layout Staff—Editor: Mary Polinchock 102 Business Staff—Editor; Joan Harvey Advisor.............
