“
If we consider the Class of 1 966 as an individual, each member constitutes an integral part of the whole. In order for the class as a unit to have functioned properly, each separate facet, while retain- ing its own identity, has had to work in precision with each of the others. Had any one of the components been unable to contribute what it had been expected to, the unit would not have succeeded as it had. Now as we stand upon the threshold of life to which we have progressed, the Class of 1966 no longer exists as a unit, but rather as a group of distinct segments about to embark upon a long un- predictable journey, nevertheless, united by a common bond. Each of us will pursue his own destiny which will culminate at a distant time and place that only the fates can foresee. Perhaps this yearbook will achieve its principal purpose by serv- ing as an everpresent and final reminder of the unity and individu- ality of the Class of 1966. It is with profound pleasure and a deep feeling of gratitude that we dedicate this yearbook to you, Mr. Aeillo. Your wisdom and farsight- edness have led us through the calm and the storm throughout the years at Division Avenue. This ded- ication represents but a small to- ken of our indebtedness. EACH TOMORROW No amount of foresight can determine what the future holds for these walls, but upon its past we can erect a frame made of our dreams and good wishes for its tomorrow. MMI 10 u Time has led us to the beginning of the end of our stay . . . 13 14 . . . but also the dedicated guidance we have received. 15 We move now to the obvious aspects of our years together: our teachers, our activities, our friends, and our memories. These are the things which we will persistently recall later this year, next year, and for many years to come. With Mr. Murphy as our able class advisor, we’ve managed to accomplish a number of things that seemed impossible, even to us. Once we found that elusive intangible called “SPIRIT”, we were able to do the extraordinary with ease. Each of us is now faced with an uncertain future, but we are not 17 without confidence and hope. FOREWORD DEDICATION EACH TOMORROW FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN YESTERDAY WAS OURS ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS 2 4 6 20 42 102 110 132 150 178 MR. LOUIS BLUMBERG SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS BOARD Left to right: Mr. Eli Mellon, President, Mrs. Angela Robino, Mr. Max Zimny, Mr. Bernard Morgenstern, Mr. Thomas Elsbree, Mr. Victor Buck, and Mr. Vincent Finneron. 23 CENTRAL Dr. John Lukinchook 24 OFFICE 25 Dear Graduates: For each of you, and your parents, graduation will symbolize a special and unique event. The meaning and value attached to it will be very personal. For all of you it will symbolize a store- house of treasured memories and accomplishments. Your commencement most certainly occurs at a time when the swirl of events adds a considerable significance: the massive attempt to finally eradicate poverty and sub-standard living; a war in Asia to preserve and defend the tenents of democracy and to honor a commitment to the free world; the persistent probing of what is temporarily te-nned the unknown space ; the agonizing battle to extend the full impact of civil law to all citizens; the more subtle problem of preserving dignity in work which increasingly becomes more impersonal: and the ever present concern to determine the most effective and efficient techniques for universal education. I trust that these events will serve to heighten and deepen the significance. If they do, it wil] mean that our goals in assisting you reach this memorable event have, at least, been partially fulfilled. The wisdom and methods you choose as an individual and as a class to deal with the persistent world problems will indicate to us the degree of success we have attained in inculcating what we have considered to be worthwhile educational objectives. The faculty, administrators, and your fellow students join me in wishing each of you a life filled with good health, abundant happiness, and immeasurable success. Sincerely, Walter M. The entire student body is proud of The Flame and hopes to see its high standards continued. GOSSAMER The Gossamer publishes original litera- ture by the student body. Handled by the members of the English 13 class this year, it was a publication to be proud of. PHYSICAL SCIENCE BULLETIN The Physical Science Bulletin gives Division's scientists an opportunity to have their original research papers published. It is a well re- spected publication throughout New York State and is used as a model by other high schools for their science periodicals. STUDENT COUNCIL In his first year as advisor, Mr Greco proved himself to be an excellent source of new ideas. The Student Grievance Board began operations this year while the canteen and other services of the Student Council continued with customary success. MR. GRECO ADVISOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The members of the Honor Society took on the responsibility of conducting on extensive tutoring service this year which proved to be a great success. Many new programs such as this are expected to be initiated shortly. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future Nurses Club was established as an aide for its members in exploring medicine and considering nursing and its allied pro- fessions as possible careers. Information is gathered through informal talks, tours of hos- pitals and rehabilitation centers, and commu- nity projects. Under the leadership of their new advisor, Mr. Coreys, the Future Teachers continued their Fine service to the school. Field trips and cake sales highlighted the year's ac- tivities. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA As always, the Future Homemakers club was one of the busiest in the school. The Christmas Bazaar and weekly cake sales were the chief means of fund raising to send representatives to the State Rally in Syracuse. SENIOR HIGH MATH TEAM The Math Team meets each week to consider and conquer problems in mathematics. The members, besides enjoying math, must be able to participate in open competition with students from other schools. JUNIOR HIGH MATH TEAM SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club was organized to promote an interest among the stu- ents in Spain's culture and contribu- tions to civilization. It gathers its in- formation through tours, films, and exhibits. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB The students who participate in the International Relations Club meet once a week to discuss current international issues. Through these discussions, members gain insight into foreign affairs. SENIOR HIGH BAND The Band, under the direction of Mr. Lutri, played at all of the home football games, at assemblies, and at the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The bandmem- bers also marched in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade again this year. JUNIOR HIGH BAND SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA Under the direction of Mr. Messina, the Orchestra again had a very fine year musically. The members played at a number of school assemblies, the Christ- mas and Spring Concerts, and graduation ceremonies. JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA CRY-SLURS This group of talented students provides outstanding choral entertainment at school functions. Many of its members also participate in district—and state-wide choral groups. SENIOR HIGH CHORUS These students gain valuable prac- tical experience in secretarial work by working as assistants to depart- ment chairmen and the administra- tion. SECRETARIAL ASSISTANTS LIBRARY AIDES One of the school's hardest work- ing, yet least heralded, groups is the Library Club. They keep the shelves stocked and send out a con- tinuous stream of over-due notices. AUDIO-VISUAL SQUAD The A.V. Squad was kept busy all year meet- ing the demands of various classes for audio- visual equipment. LAB SQUADS Members of the Lab Squads give up their study periods to aid the science department in setting up experiments and keeping the labs orderly. The gendarmes of Division Avenue have been a great help to both teachers and students. Members of this group have the unique abil- ity to check passes, patrol halls, and do homework all in the same period. SERVICE SQUAD MAJORETTES Every home football game featured the colorful and talented Majorettes. Their skillful routines were well appreciated TEMPERATURE CHASERS The members of this group are enrolled in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Condi- tioning program, and are learning more about their chosen line of work. INDUSTRIOUS DRAGON These craftsmen are responsible for the popu- lar vocational publication. VARSITY CLUB Those white sweaters with the big letters represent the skill and hard work for which their owners are known. Members of this respected club act as ushers at all home sporting events. The annual Varsity Club Dinner brings parents as well as varsity letter winners and coaches to- gether for the formal award presentations. LEADERS’ CLUB Although requirements for admis- sion to the Leaders' Club have be- come increasingly more stringent, the group keeps expanding. The girls in white must be bright, phys- ically fit leaders who not only pos- sess but also display athletic skills. The Girls' Phys. Ed. Department would have a hard time functioning properly without the help of the Leaders. Varsity Football '65-'66 Our Varsity Football Team had an impressive season, ending the season tied for second place. The season opened with the Gold Bucket victory over Memorial. Many of the team members were singled out for league and North Shore distinction: Ken White All League Bob White All League Ken Schnide All League Dennis Burns All League, All North Shore Dennis Champney All League, All North Shore Behind quarterback Ken White and Coach Jewell, the Blue Dragons gave the school much early season spirit. 152 John Lucas Ken Scnide Dennis Champney Red Letter winner Paul Cathy Bob White Butch Kaupke Roy Rosen Ken White John Driscoll Frank Monte -M Soccer Team '65-'66 This year's soccer team compiled a fine record in league competition of 6 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. Led by seniors Sal Saitta, Al Policano, Myles Walsh, Ricky Byers and Chris Stalberg, and outstanding juniors like Joy Crair, an oil league member, and Paul Zuc- coni, Joe Lutz, Holger Brencher, and Brian Black, the team was able to complete one of its best seasons. Even with Red Letter winner Steve Salfeety sidelined for much of the season with a serious leg injury, the concerted effort of the team overcame the setback. The highlight of the season was a victory over a strong team from Wheatly. Steve Salfeety Red Letter Winner 154 North Shore Division 111 Wrestling Champions Varsity Squad '65-'66 95 1b. The out- standing member of the team was Brad Clark, who was both the high scorer and the best rebounder. However, the overall success was due more to the tremendous team effort and the coaching of Mr. Campanelli. Next year's squad shows great promise with veterans Ed Jerome, Gil Citrin, Joe Mankow- ski, Dennis Burns, John Spencer, and Joe Miracola returning. 158 Bowling Team '65-'66 Varsity Team Bob Cunningham Harry Evert Jaimie Garthwaite Tony Rizzo Ken Durdaller Paul La Mar Team Record Wins 28 Losses 12 Ties 0 This year, the Bowling Team finished second in the North Shore Division II league. Our team also finished second in the North Shore Bowling Tournament in which sixteen teams participated. Ken Durdaller, one of the more promising juniors received the Red Letter, having the highest average on the team, 174. 160 Lacrosse Team 1966 Lacrosse is a comparatively new sport at Division, but our teams have done extremely well from the outset. The team is sparked with a savage desire to win, and this desire has often led the team to overwhelming victories. Allen Henderson Tom La Paglia Paul Cathy Neal Lennstrom John Lucas Bob Disimile Derek Graves Frank Monte Ken Schnide 161 Varsity Baseball '66 The '66 Varsity Baseball Team had the memory of a very successful '65 team to prompt it to superior achievement this spring. This, coupled with returning talent, helped to lead the boys through a fine season. Seniors such as Jaimie Garthwaite and Al Policano won league and county titles in '65 and promise to reach even greater heights this season. Juniors Ed Jerome and Dennis Burns had been named as honorable mentions to the league's list last year and are cinches to be honored further this year. Fine all round teamwork has contributed to the success of this team in the past years and is definitely a contributing factor this year as well. 162 Mr. Amen considers Al Policono and Jaimie Gorthwoite our best bets for league and county titles this year. Al is great at shortstop ond Jaimie covers a big piece of centerfield. Both are pretty handy with a bat as well. Tony Rizzo Tommy Snipe Chris Stalberg Ronnie Walters Butch Kaupke Billy Carnes 1966 Track Team Ricky Byers Frank Bauer Neal Reilly Brendan Voss Red Letter winner Under the coaching of Mr. Pivnick, the Harriers of D.A.H.S. once again completed a successful fall season. Paced by seniors Brendan Voss, Frank Bauer, Neal Reilly and Jim Selkirk, the Division runners continued the tradition of a winning season. 1966 Cross Country Team 165 Chris Feldman Nancy Thomas, Amelia Galizi, Sandi Garber, Chris Morse, Nancy Kuhn, Lexa Larsen, Janet Caroll, Linda Crompton, Janice Warburton Pot Lane, Copt. Through rain, snow, sleet, and hail, the cheerleaders were always there to cheer on the football team and basketball team. Whether winning or losing, they maintained school spirit and good sportsmanship among the spectators. 166 The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders The J.V. Cheerleaders are the junior edition of the Varsity squad. These girls have much the same problems as the Varsity girls, but the J.V. girls have much less glory. How- ever, next year's Varsity Cheerleaders will have many of these girls as members. 167 SENIOR HIGH GIRLS’ SOFTBALL IN MEMORIAM SUSAN BUNCHUCK So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan, which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed, By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave. Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down in pleasant dreams. Thanatopsis William Cullen Bryant 172 IN MEMORIAM MR. JOHN C. DUNLOP There is no death!
