DEDICATIO MR. JAMES AMEN It is with a sense ot deep pride and admiration, that we the Class of 1965 dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Amen. You have helped to guide us down our various roads at Divi- sion Avenue. Your spirit has shown like a beacon in a storm. V ' ' 'ww--7 - N 7 I 9 1 i I 1 4 1 To The Seniors: You are to be congratulated for meeting the high standard of academic achievement required for the Division Avenue High School diploma. We have attempted to complement your scholastic experience with learnings concerned with the development of character and integrity. It is hoped that through your academic and social activities in Division Avenue High you have acquired the knowledge and attitudes which will enable you to render service and make productive contributions to your community. Your contemporary world demands young men and women of courage and conviction. Do not be reluctant to present your ideas or follow a course of actiong but, be sure that your thoughts and acts are based on knowledge, integrity and sensitivity to the rights of other people. Now, more than ever, your country needs active and creative citizens. The critical issues of our time call for the response of an interested and informed citizenry. The historic issue of nworld survival or non will not be solved by passive observation or conformity to a pattern of Let the other fellow do the work and thinking . You are citizens of the greatest democratic nation of the world and it is your duty to help shape the systems under which you live and to perpetuate the democratic institutions which form part of our legacy. Each succeed- ing generation in this country has contributed to the improvement of man's environment along political, economic and social lines. Of course, we have been threatened by destructive forces from both within and outside of our nation's boundaries but, in each instance, an active citizenry has risen to the situation and preserved the freedoms synonymous with the United States of America. The Class of L965 has contributed to the fine traditions of Division Avenue High. The pride we now have in your scholastic and athletic achievements will be continued in your future accomplishments. I personally extend an invitation to the members of the Class to visit their school and share experiences and problems with the staff. Our best wishes are with you always. Sincerely yogiiilzh Jerome Botwinick, Ed. D. Principal Mr. Eugene Aiello Mr. John F. Quirk Mr. John C. Dunlap I2 The men who framed the Constitution would not today be called a highly educated group, by academic standards. There was not a pro- fessor of government among them. Most of them could not have met the entrance requirements for college. Still, despite their lack of formal education they were well educated in the true meaning of the term. First, and most important, they knew how to think. Second, they were well read in the classic and had learned how to blend living experience with the lessons of history. The fathers of our country were well educated in still another sense- they were deeply imbued with moral values. Their minds drew a clear distinction between good and evil, between principle and expediency. They were not uncertain of the values they believed in and were deter- mined to uphold them. Dear Graduates of 1965: A school is but the lengthened shadow of its inhabitants, its students and its stafffl am proud that the bulk of Division's proportions are re- flected from that loyal, intelligent, and enthusiastic group of honored students who are members of the Class of 1965. This year marks the tenth anniversary of my ioining Division's staff. During this time I have had the privilege, pleasure, and satisfaction to serve this school as teacher, counselor, and administrator. From the van- tage point of my responsibilities, I have been afforded an intimate view of the talent -and character of five graduation classes. It has been profoundly rewarding and renewing in the realm of spirit, mind and professional commitment, to know that Division's graduates only become better than their predecessors. I have witnessed your growing awareness that there is a must in many aspects of life, that there are many things that youth must learn to do without expectation of the pleasure of reward. I have witnessed honesty, courtesy, and moral integrity around which a young person must shape his life. Congratulations and every good wish for your continued success and self-fulfillment. Your future lies at the doorstep to a new world. As Americans you have a double charge: leaders in progress and world peace keepers. Never before has a country held such profound power. Your best achievements will help write an even greater page in Amer- ican history. Nothing else will do. It is my pleasure to wish you happiness in the challenging years ahead. Mr. Blumberg Superintendent of Schools Mr. Mellan Mr. Gangi Mr. Morgenstern Mr. Buck Mr. Zimney Mrs. Rubino Mr Hoshlno Every other Monday night, this term, while we were all at home studying, a group of devoted citizens were participating in vital meetings. These well educated and informed men and women were the members of our school board. Mr. Eli Mellan, a most experienced and witty president, conducted these gatherings which often lasted until the wee hours of the morn- mg. Our school board serves a vital purpose be- cause it unites the community and educational system. Its decisions and guidance aid parents, teachers and students throughout our school lives. Much appreciation and recognition is ex- tended to the District 9995 Board of Education. CENTRAL 1 DR. MULLEN DR. X sigh v. w The Class of 1965, under the auspices of Mr. Lasker, has left a unique legacy to Divi- sion Avenue High School. lt has made the Stu- dent Government an effective instrument of constructive democracy. This year the Senior Class sponsored a very successful carnival with a variety show, and also ran a candy sale. Aside from having a very successful eco- nomic year the Class of T965 had a memo- rable and exciting year-a year in which we truly became a class with spirit, drive, and hope for the future. The members of the Class of 1965 will long remember this mo- mentous year in their lives. lc guv Cp-Qfflffllf .Hurd Jhcw.-2 all UDL' ,Jeweler un Uw . JOSEPH CLARO-Advisor Our chosen theme-Roads l4b PERSPECTUM - 1965 You are now turning the pages of this book thanks to the efforts of these people. Contrary to public opinion, that little room in the lobby has seen many hours of hard work and many sessions of fighting f this picture's too dark, No, you can't put that in the yearbook, etc., etc.J. Despite the friction and the work, how- ever, the end result has been worth it all. STUDENT COUNCIL MR. CONROY Each Friday morning, a group of ambitious class officers and Mr. Conroy, the council's able advisor, got together to plan the student body's organization. After setting up a budget and planning the dates of events, the council launched our giant CARE protect. Following that, a system of special service awards was established. The council care- fully coordinated this year's class elections. The council's new proiect is the improvement of the appearance of the cafeterias. Mass Exodus. No, this isn'f the Big Apple! NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Honor Society is to encourage and recognize excellence of Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. This year the club has participated in many varied proiects both helpful and enioyable. Honor Society Induction, GGSSAMER The Gossamer is the school's outstanding literary magazine. Under the guidance of Miss Napolitano, the staff succeeded in turning out an excellent literary work. FLAME This year, the Flame has grown and developed into a fine literary effort. With the help of Mr. O'DonnelI and the editor Renie Herman, the Flame succeeded in turning out eight issues. TEMPERATURE CIEIASERS This group of young men are members of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Condi- tioning program in our school: this accounts for their unusual name. They are learning more about their chosen profession. INDUSTRIOUS DRAGON The industrious Dragon is one of the newer clubs this year. lt is composed of young craftsmen and technicians of the Industrial Arts department. These boys have produced a very interesting publication. VARSITY CLUB LEADERS' CLUB The men in white are fast being replaced by the girls in white, an efficient and select staff that all but ran the school's athletic program. Prime requisites for mem- bership were leadership, scholarship, and the ability' to play and teach sports skills. The Phys. Ed. department without the Leaders' Club would be like a goalie without shin guards. SENIOR HIGH BAND This year the band, led by Mr. Lutri and President Charles Davenport, marched in the ST. PaTrick's Day Parade to The tune of MacNamara's Band. JUNIOR HIGH BAND SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA This year, the orchestra participated in two Orchestral Exchange festivals. The first one was with Berner High School in Massapequa and the second with West Hempstead at our school, under the direction of Mr. Messina and President, Rose Sheffler. JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA CRY-SLURS If some afternoons this spring, you heard music and singing coming out of the auditorium, it was more than likely the Cry-Slurs rehearsals for the musical Annie Get Your Gun which was presented this year by the Cry- Slurs. The show was a tremendous success and was another credit to the fine name the Cry-Slurs have established in our school. Besides their musical production, they also entered the New York State School Music Association competition and came home with honors for the school. The Cry-Slurs also aid the school by lending their vocal talents to entertain at the P.T.A. meetings and concerts. DRAMA SOCIETY This year, the Drama Society presented two short one-act plays in May. Under the expert direction of Miss Roskovics, the club has received much praise and acclaim. GYMNASTICS CLUB This is a new club which started this year under the guidance of Miss Gilman. This club met several mornings a week at 7:00 a.m. LIBRARY SQUAD A library can be a bewildering place in which one can be confounded by the card catalog before he even begins to be confounded by a book. But Mrs. Huber and the library squad are dedicated to producing a generation of Division Avenue students wh will be thoro hl familia with th Iibrar o ug y r e y and its function. JUNIOR HIGH LEADERS' CL UB i FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future Nurses of America . . . A more original schedule than any other organi- zation this year. They visited hospitals, had guest speakers from various institutions, saw movies, and did research. SECRETARIAL ASSISTANTS This group of hard-working girls work tirelessly to aid the department chairmen in their clerical work. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America have tried to instill within themselves and the entire student body a deeper appreciation of the teacher's role in American educa- tion. This year, led by Mr. Reggio, and encouraged by President, Camille Sanzone, the F.T.A. initiated a student teacher program on the iunior high level. Members assumed the responsibilities of accredited teachers, thereby realizing the burden of that responsibility more fully. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers of America strive to serve the school in the best possible way. They derive satisfaction from the many services they perform, under the guidance of Mrs. Huenlich. MATH TEAM Under the able guidance of Mr. Rydzewski, the Math Team completed another successful season of mental athletics. Inspired by the mathematical muscles of Cap- tain Marc Davis, our team finished tenth out of a field of 52 competitors. This year, Division Avenue played host for two meets, held in round table fashion with 5 teams competing in each. We are proud of our team. Anyone who can make a game out of trigonometry deserves praise. JUNIOR HIGH MATH CLUB Wg g HAM RADIO CLUB The purpose of this club in the words of President Barry Bader, is to put Division Avenue High School in contact with radio stations all over the globe. This spring, it realized its obiective for the first time in its history, when Division Avenue hit the air waves and broadcasted its message of good will to all the 50 states and many nations abroad. The club, under the guidance of Mr. Millman, was also active this year in conducting a training program for Federal Radio licensing. INTERNATIONAL RELATIGNS CLUB The International Relations Club, led by Pres. Howard Rosenfeld and Mr. Greco, tries to foster a spirit of international understanding among the student body. Through films, discussions 'and field trips, its members acquire a sympathy for the problems involved with formulating foreign policy. This year, the club's primary interest was a field trip to the United Nations. SENIOR SERVICE SQUAD In order to insure smooth traffic in the hall, and give Seniors an authority complex, the Class of 1965 resurrected the Senior Service Squad. Led by Captain Bob Larsen and dauntless Mr. Simes, fifty seniors, manning posts throughout the school, fearlessly attacked wandering seventh graders. t 'fl CV J ,f'YVL'ilV A 4 ' , Alf Gf sl I K if i ,uc , 4 I' 1 . f ,,' - 1 ' ' , , W I , VJKJLIJ fl ' ,il if ll the it kr X cu. it ,fill ' L 1 .fi ,V Q. - , f H l -,' 1 f .,,' 1 ,JYQ I, I l i 8-J. Reports are submitted by many talented students in science. Only the best are used in this publication. The club is guided by Mrs. Murphy and President Robert Specker. GERMAN CLUB The purpose of the German Club is to acquaint German students with German culture and life. This year, Mrs. Shoemaker took the club on a field trip to Yorktown, for a German Iunch'and movie. FRENCH CLUB g There are many dangers in beginning a new club. Perhaps membership will not be sufficiently great to begin operating, or if it is, perhaps it will lag before the end of the year. The new French Club CCircle Francaisi surmounted these obstacles admirably. Encouraged by Monsieur Shatz and Mademoiselle Lipkin, and led by its president, Ira Cheifetz the club became an immediate hit with the French students of D.A.H.S. A general election among the student body determined the winners. l7I FOOTBALL: A GREAT YEAR This past fall, the Division li once again proved that hard work and team spirit are the prerequisite to a successful season. Captain Rich Sandler had great talent under his command, and under the direction of Coach Jerry Jewell, was able to use it against some formidable opponents. Mineola, stalwart and big on Long Island, fell to the superior ranks of the Big Blue, a sign of how later games were to turn out. Levittown Memorial was another significant victory.
