I Levittown, Long Island, New York 3 The passage of time is measured by the fruits of prog- ress as well as in months and years. Materially, we may witness the workings of progress by merely observing the number of bricks which compose the ever-expanding ex- terior of Division Avenue High School. Less tangibly, ad- vancement is represented by the grains of sand which fall continuously through the hourglass of time. Both our school and the community have experienced tremendous improvement over the years. For this reason, the chosen theme of the 1963 Perspectum is . . . time and progress. We join with others in the community in the hope that this theme will inspire increasing progress and advancement in times that lie ahead. There are few people who extend their valuable ser- vices to others more readily than Mr. Lasker. A request for his help is never refused, and, more important, he frequently offers his able assistance when it is most need- ed. His character will serve as a ready guide for all stu- dents who wish to improve themselves. Knowing that it would be impossible to repay him in any way for his aid to both the Class of 1963 and its yearbook, we endeavor instead to preserve our thankful- ness and appreciation of his many efforts in our behalf by dedicating this yearbook to him. 6 TABLE OF CONTENTS nior Awards T r m 10 ADMINISTRATION MR. LOUIS BLUMBERG DIVISION AVENUE HIGH SCHOOL James R. Reilly. Principal Dear Graduates of 1963: We are inclined in our modern day society of technological superiority to often confuse progress with change; our descriptive vocabulary bubbles with cheaper- less work—faster—more comfort—farther. In our press forward it is imperative that we match our achievements against the touchstone of true progress—the en- noblement of mankind, universal justice, reverence for truth. Your intellectual development at this period must be viewed as a nurturing of values and an inculcation of standards, both moral and spiritual. To define your success today in terms of your familiarity with facts and adroitness of manipulative skills is to be blind to the meaning of existence and deaf to the echoes of the past. Our nation is today powerful and wealthy and comfortable because of our in- ventors, our financiers, our scientists; but its soul and its being have evolved from faith in the Almighty, from the wisdom of Jefferson and Lincoln, from the sacrifice of Hale and Warren, from the voice of Longfellow and Frost. To jet the length and breadth of our land is awesome; but to rise so high that the land and its people fade to nothing is disaster. May the progress you make in your time bring man closer to his heritage of happiness, of truth, of honor and justice. Sincerely yours, 13 -• LEVITTOWN PUBLIC SCHOOLS- LEVITTOWN, N . Y. The essence of civilization is to see that everyone matters to you, as your every act matters to them. This is the basic commu- nication we all must make. In making it, we civilize not only others but ourselves. MR. EUGENE AIELLO Assistant Principal the Class of 1963 cannot be catalogued, pigeon- holed, or fused into a statistical graph. These aspirations have grown within me as I have followed your progress with pleasure and in- terest. I am confident that you will continue the legacy of all Division Avenue High School graduates—to strive for success in whatever task you undertake. No matter how excellent or average a stu- dent may have been here at Division, you must now live with your fellow man; work with him, continue your studies with him, and participate in the responsibilities of commu- nity and nation. This is a serious problem, be- cause at no time in history have Americans striven so frantically in the pursuit of pleasure —of making themselves happy. This pursuit of the myth happiness does more than al- most any other national attitude to deprive us of the fullest realization of our ambitions and hopes. In fact, the myth of happiness may be the thief of our self-respect and the contri- butions that each of us has to make to our fellow man . . , contributions that could pro- vide the key to humanity's limitless problems —of survival—of health—of justice—of knowl- edge—of freedom and truth. Leo Rosten, prolific writer and political sci- entist, has said: The purpose of life is not to be happy. The purpose of life is to matter; to be productive; to have it make some dif- ference that you lived at all. Happiness, in the ancient, noble sense, means self-fulfillment I sincerely hope you will find in all your ventures that true happiness of self-fulfillment which comes from stretching to their farthest limits all the resources of your mind and heart. 15 FACULTY ARTS HOMEMAKING MRS. left), Editor-in-Chief, with Flame Editorial staff FLAME Our school newspaper has been exceptional- ly busy this year because of its change in policy. For the first time since the establishment of the Flame, frequent issues have been printed with stress placed on student activities. We are all proud of this publication, and are sure it will continue to maintain its high standards in the future. GOSSAMER The purpose of the Gossamer is to supply the members of the student body with an outlet for its literary inclinations. Mr. Hall's publication contains articles which appeal to all readers. Mr. Gero, Advisor; Joseph Imparato, Treasurer; Christine Jacobson, Secretary; Louise Gallo, Vice-President; Roger Nortillo, President SENIOR HIGH GENERAL ORGANIZATION The General Organization is the representative organ of the student body. Its purpose is to give students first-hand experience with democratic principles and practices. A. V. SQUAD The Audio-Visual Squad has the responsibility for maintaining the apparatus em- ployed in supplementing the normal class work. CRY-SLURS Under the direction of Mr. Vitale, the Cry—Slurs perform at all school shows. This year they appeared in the Christmas and Spring concerts, and in a musical, Annie Get Your Gun. 128 CHORUS The Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Vitale, meets during the lunch periods. Its purpose is to give students who like to sing the opportunity to do so in an informal atmosphere. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA This organization, under the di- rection of Mrs. Huenlich, is com- posed of senior high girls who are interested in improving their culi- nary and homemaking abilities. The students also participate at various times throughout the year in many service projects. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future Nurses of America have been most active in the past school year. Their agenda has included tours of hospitals, movies, and visits from representatives of nursing organizations. The members of this club have thus been actively realizing the goal of the club, which is to gain a working knowledge of the field of nursing. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Under the guidance of Mr. Reggio, the Future Teachers of America have been very active this year. The club's purpose is to acquaint its members with the field of teaching. To obtain this end, the members participate in student teaching. 130 The Lab Squads are composed of students who aid the science teachers in the preparation of lab experiments. They perform many im- portant, indispensable duties. PHYSICAL SCIENCE BULLETIN Under the sponsorship of Mr. Gough and Mr. Kershnar, the Physical Science Bulletin stimulates the minds of students interested in the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, and electronics.) Students submit reports and research papers, and the best are se- lected for publication. 131 LEADERS CLUB The Leaders Club has undergone a drastic change during the past year. It has become a more exclusive group with a higher criterium for membership. The members assist the girls' gym teachers both during classes and in after-school intramurals. LIBRARY CLUB The members of the Library Club assist Mr. Barry and Mr. Mathews in running the school library. In this way these in- dustrious students gain experience in filing and bookkeeping practices. 132 SENIOR HIGH MATH TEAM With the graduation of many top math stars of last year, this year's team has found the com- petition rather difficult. However, the spirit and original interest in math, which inspired the group to begin with, is still quite ap- parent. We hope that next year will be successful in competition as well as in the desire to partic- ipate. The Junior High Math Team too learned more about their subject, while at the same time meeting with other schools in competition. The opportunity to participate in this club sparks interest that helps to build a better student. JUNIOR HIGH MATH TEAM JUNIOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY After its second year as a junior branch of the National Honor Society, this group has increased its size while maintaining the quality which in- spired it. With an ample treasury, and the necessary interest in the school, this club is well prepared for the future. MUSIC WORKSHOP This junior high organization has a group of interested and active mu- sic lovers participating in it. This year, it followed in the footsteps of its predecessor, and took a trip to see an opera. The members of the Mu- sic Workshop hope to be able to ex- pand the scope of their activities in coming years. 134 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Outstanding scholarship, merit, character, and service are the qualities required for membership in the N.H.S. Under the supervision of Mrs. Lyons, the society adopted a needy family and diligently worked to raise money for the scholarship fund, as well as participating in many other school service projects. SCIENCE CLUB Under the direction of Mr. Langdon and Mr. Gero, the Science Club has en- abled interested students to further their knowledge of science by working on ad- vanced science projects. Through applied experimentation the members of this club have made their organization a note- worthy one. SECRETARIAL POOL The work of this group is not only beneficial to the girls who are a part of it, but to the entire school as well. These sometimes unsung heroines deserve a vote of appreciation for the secretarial aid they give the staff and administration. VARSITY CLUB This year, the Varsity Club has been very active. In the fall, this group spon- sored a dance, and helped in the adoption of a family at Christmas time. The boys, led by Mr. Jewell, have decided to devote more time to aiding the community, and have gone far in this area. For all aspiring members, the possession of a varsity letter and some interest are the requirements. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Under the able leadership of Mr. Segal, the members of the Photography Club, which was originally formed to pro- mote an active interest in this fascinating subject, learn about photography through reading and experimentation. This organization is com- posed of a group of talent- ed girls whose practice is evidenced by their fine per- formances with our march- ing band. TWIRLERS CLUB 138 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB Our own version of the United Nations right here at Division Avenue—that is the International Relations Club under the able direction of Mr. Calderone. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club, un- der the leadership of Mrs. Miranda, has had two Spanish-flavored parties and has taken a trip to New York City in order to observe Spanish culture. SENIOR HIGH BAND Under the able direction of Mr. Lutri, the band this year has highlighted many of the most important musical events that have occurred. This group is composed of talented, interested musicians who contribute greatly to the spirit of our school. SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA Mr. Messina's leadership has produced in the Senior High Orchestra one of the best groups the school has seen. It is composed of students who are willing to give their time to create good music. The many outstanding individuals which it has produced have provided enjoyment for the entire school. 140 JUNIOR HIGH BAND The seventh and eighth grade band this year has learned much, and gained experience that will be of great value in its musical pursuits. Given the opportunity to play at assemblies, it has shown the earmarks of a very talented group. JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA We can also look forward to a better senior high orchestra when the students of the group above lend their time and experience to it. What they have learned this year under the direction of Mr. Messina will benefit them greatly in their understanding of music and orchestration. 141 143 VARSITY FOOTBALL Mr. Jewell, Captain Laddie Pietros Playing their second season in one of Nassau's toughest Leagues, the Blue Dragons fought their way to a tie for third place, considerably better than last year. The majority of the team consisted of underclassmen who are looking forward to a great season next year. Fired-Up Dragons J.V. FOOTBALL The J.V. Football team, under the coaching of Mr. Arculeo and Mr. Waters, was undefeated this year. These fine play- ers, when teamed with the remaining players of this season's varsity, should have a great var- sity season next year. VARSITY SOCCER The soccer team, led by All-League senior Pete Henaghan, and seniors Bob Benn, Jerry Gentle- man, Bob Ellerkamp, Rod Morgan, and David Louns- bury, faced a tough sched- ule this year, but neverthe- less performed very well. An excellent J.V. team in- sures a good season next year. 145 VARSITY TENNIS The Varsity Cross Country team was undefeated in Section competition this year. Led by captains Bart Thibadeau and Don Padgett, the team won the league cham- pionship. Coach Pivnick looks forward to good seasons for the next two or three years because of the large number of good sophomores on the team. Mr. Levy and his tennis team fought their way through a rough schedule, and faired rather well against tough competition. Mr. Levy looks forward to coaching a much-improved team next fall, although he is certain to miss outstanding senior Marty Weiss. VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY WRESTLING Division's wrestlers had another fine season, winning ten and losing only four. Five Divisionites competed in the County Wrestling Tournament, includ- ing seniors Bill Colligan and Pete Hen- aghan. Sophomore Tony Gallo won the championship of the North Shore Wrestling Tournament. Mr. Wright TRACK The track team this year was the larg- est ever, and there- fore had more depth than before. Losing relatively few members through graduation, the team should be in fine shape for the future. BASKETBALL The basketball team this year, while filled with drive and hustle, lacked the necessary height to finish well up in the league standings. Coach Amen, after five years of coaching varsity basketball at Division, announced his retirement at the end of the season. A number of good sophomores and juniors promises better things for next year. ■ I VARSITY CHEERLEADERS The cheerleading squad, ably di- rected by Miss Elchysen and Mr. Gra- nese, and captained by Cathy Burner, was present at all football and basket- ball games during the 1962-1963 sea- son. The squad's inspired cheering made them a credit to our school. Rick-a-rack-a-fire- cracker! JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS 150 GIRLS’ SPORTS FIELD HOCKEY Cheese it! The fuzz! AAr. The sand in the hourglass is perpetually in motion, but it is bounded by the closed curves of the spheres. The sand on the beach has no boundaries, no limits. Small as the grains are, they are free to merge and shift in myriad patterns of never-end- ing variety. We seniors are as grains of sand, now set free to join the countless numbers of other grains, stretching as far as the eye can see on life's shores. The choice is ours—will we keep our freedom of movement, and each contribute our own share? Or will we confine ourselves to the hourglass of complacency, constantly being turned by others, doing nothing but marking time? 176
