3 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES SPORTS FOREWORD As we, the Class of 1962, approach the uncertain future, each of us will look back upon our years at Division Avenue High School with a mixture of pride and nostalgia. For, during these early years of exploration and growth in a world often harsh and cruel, often happy and exhilarating, we have found the strength to go onward and upward to meet the challenges that we have faced in the past and will face in the future. Here at Division, we have been guided and directed by our teachers in our initial training toward our ultimate goals. Through their help and by our own initiative and drive, we have reached a major milestone in our lives. The years at Division have served as a basis for the development of our individual personalities. The emotionlof happiness, sadness, pride and melancholy have all been an integral of these funda- mental years. Now, as we review our past at Divisio H se emotions stand out most in our memories. Therefore, with these fresh in our minds, we use moods’’ as the theme of this PERSPECT R 62. THE STA] DEDICATION Accomplishment has many causes and brings many rewards, the most significant of which are initiative and independence. The satis- faction of fulfilling a goal independently surpasses any other. The Class of 1962 may point appreciatively to Mr. Robert L. Simes, our torch in the darkness and our embodiment of self-accomplishment. His knowing guidance has shown us the way to mature action and has enabled us to achieve our goals confidently. Thus, in the most infinite gratitude to Mr. Simes’ inspiration and to the ideal of self-accomplishment, we proudly dedicate this PER- 9 ADMINISTRATION The true purpose of education is to cherish and unfold the seed of immortality already sown within us; to develop, to their fullest extent, the capacities of every kind with which the God who made us has endowed us. JAMESON II JAMES R. REILLY Principal DIVISION AVENUE HIGH SCHOOL JAMES R. REILLY, PRINCIPAL Dear Graduates of 1962, Retrospection is both a responsibility and a pleasure for naan during his journey through life; with this ability he prepares himself for the future by reviewing his experiences, by evaluating his successes, and by analyzing his failures; he girds himself with fortitude and faith to stride forward to meet the challanges of tomorrow. The theme of this Perspectum will enable you to pause at this way station of your life - your high school graduation - to relive the past four years. As the pages flip before you, as you move again through the pictures of your school career, you will begin to repair and reenforce your foundations of life. Welcome this opportunity for the journey is still long and arduous, A nan of wisdom once counseled a youth that the future is today; our strengths and weaknesses of today, our desires and ambitions of today are what they will be in the future. If that be so then we must as intelligent, free human beings live today to the fullest of our talents and abilities. May the next stage of your journey take you far and may Congratulations, Graduates! At long last another milestone has been achieved. For some it may seem an end; to others, just a beginning, but education must never cease. Education is the road to abundance and material wealth but education also is the road to cultural enrichment. Most important, educa- tion is the road to genuine freedom. If every member of the Class of '62 faced the reality of what the fulfillment of the anti- democratic objectives rampant throughout the world today would mean to him, he would be inspired to continue after graduation to work harder and study longer to protect and preserve the individual liberty and freedom which is the mainspring of our American way of life. If you continue to develop a strong and self-reliant character and resolve to be men and women who do things, instead of evading re- sponsibility with excuses, you must inevitably become leaders and valuable members of so- ciety. Very best wishes to you all for a lifetime of true success and happiness. 14 JOHN F. QUIRK Assistant Principal SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS MR. L. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW GENERAL ORGANIZATION This year the General Organization, after a successful membership drive, has undertaken many projects of great importance to the school. Dances were held to raise money for chartered clubs and the canteen was opened to supply after-school refresh- ment. A new juke-box was purchased and will, no doubt, provide entertainment for years to come. MR. GERO, Advisor 144 Senior High Representatives Junior High Members Roger Nortillo, Marjoirie Pearl, Sue Propper, Linda Kaiser 145 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is both an honorar)' and a service organization. Members are selected on the basis of scholarship, service, character and leader- ship ability, in addition to a faculty rec- ommendation. This year, under the ex- cellent supervision of Mrs. Lyons, the Honor Society has begun a tutorial service, a college information program for high school seniors, and a paper delivery serv- ice for the faculty and students. The Honor Society this year attended a per- formance of the Broadway show, Came- lot, as an extra-curricular activity. 146 FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America have had another active year in 1962, which was capped by their annual fund-raising auction. The function of this organization is to familiarize its members with the teaching profession. Student teaching and attend- ance at the LIFE Conference were part of the agenda this year. The Future Homemakers of America is composed of senior high school girls who are interested in the domestic arts. Members usher at school functions and serve behind the scenes when the home- making rooms are used. The club has participated in vari- ous service projects which have been helpful both to the school and to the community. Keep up the good work, girls! FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA 147 FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future Nurses of America has been es- tablished to help mem- bers learn more about the field of nursing as a career. Information is gathered through tours of hospitals and rehabil- itation centers, and the girls are then able to gain a better under- standing of this extreme- ly important profession. AUDIO VISUAL SQUAD The Audio Visual Squad has the task of delivering and main- taining technical appara- tus used to supplement class work. Supervised by Mr. Halligan, this group carries on a very essential function i n school operation. 148 SERVICE SQUAD The distinguished service squad performs many important duties. Its members patrol the halls, check passes, supervise the lunchrooms, do homework, and exercise authority in many critical situations (such as deciding who goes first on the lunch lines). Without the Squad, whatever would become of our school? LIEUTENANTS 149 LAB SQUADS If you are lacking necessary materials for a lab experiment, blame the lab squad. These scientifically-minded students help the instructors set up lab experiments and keep equipment in place. Even if the experiment doesn't work, we can at least be sure we used thq right materials. 150 SECRETARIAL POOL One of the most useful organizations in the school is the Secretarial Pool. The girls on this staff work in the administrative offices and assist departmental chairmen. Their duties range from answering telephones to running errands. Whatever they do, the girls are a big help and are to be commended for a wonderful job. LIBRARY CLUB Another very active service organization is the Library Club, directed by Mr. Fischer. This group charges, shelves and repairs books and assists the librarians by keeping the library in smooth operation. 151 PERSPECTUM 1962 The Yearbook Staff has strived to produce this third Per- spectum, the record of the Class of '62. Each has contrib- uted his utmost to make this book the best.” Thank you one and all for a job well done! 152 Yearbook Staff iWM«! hmm PHYSICAL SCIENCE BULLETIN The Bulletin is another inform- ative publication produced by Divi- sion Avenue's students. The staff endeavors to present current knowl- edge of the physical sciences in a form which will be clear and con- cise. The articles are submitted by interested students and, if approved, are then published. Here is a splen- did chance for students to submit their theories on relativity! GOSSAMER The Gossamer, the school's fine literary magazine, provides a chance for students to submit original work for consideration and possible publication. Each issue contains items which appeal to all readers. Perhaps this is the reason for the magazine's phenomenal acceptance by the student body. 154 The FLAME has provoked controversy this year through many of its articles and editorials. The paper has helped the school to remain in the know by its publications, and has stimulated much thought on problems that face not only our school, but our nation, in today's world. SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club was formed to promote an interest in science, one of the most important fields in today's technological world. The students work on advanced projects which they plan themselves to gain skills and interests which will be useful in later life. 155 CHESS CLUB The Chess Club is new to our school. Its purpose is to give members a chance to improve their skill in the game. Guided by their advisor, Mr. Simes, the members fulfill this aim by playing against one another in tournaments. Perhaps one of them will become an Einstein! DRAGONETTES Although the Dragonettes are comparatively new, they have certainly come to the attention of the entire student body. These girls, supervised by Mr. Vitale, have appeared at all football and basketball games. Giving support to the teams, helping the cheerleaders encourage the cheers of the fans, and per- forming during half-time have all been a part of their function. May this group continue to carry on the spirit of Division Avenue for all of its athletic activities. MATH CLUB The Math Club meets weekly and gives its members a chance to learn material above and beyond regular classwork. Many of the club members belong to the Math Team which is also under the di- rection of Mr. Vandewater. From this group may come the engineers and scientists of the future who will promote the nation's interests in the technical fields. MATH TEAM This year the Math Team won the Nassau County Interscholastic Math Team Championship after a contest between the county’s high schools in mathematical problems. The team is composed of the top math students in our school and in- cludes sophomores, juniors and seniors. These students enjoy do- ing problems which involve in- tuition and application of basic prin- ciples. Congratulations are extended to all members of the team for their fine efforts this year. 57 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB The International Relations Club has certainly had a lot to talk about in the past year. These serious-minded students meet once a week to discuss current inter- national issues. Through different projects, the members are attempt- ing to increase their knowledge of foreign countries. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club has been organized to promote an interest in Spanish culture and contributions to civilization. The goal has been accomplished by various tours, films, exhibits, and other educational materials on this most interesting subject. Serving as both an honorary and a service organization, the Varsity Club consists of boys who have earned a varsity letter in interscholastic sports. Members assist at the school's athletic functions and have performed many worthwhile services for the sports department. VARSITY CLUB PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Photography Club was formed to promote an active interest in this fascinating subject. With the guidance of Mr. Segal, the members learn about the subject through reading and experimentation. One of them may even become a PERSPECTUM photog- raphy editor someday. 159 CRY - SLURS The Cry-Slurs, Division Avenue's unique singing organization, has been active again this year. Under the direction of Mr. Frank Vitale, they staged the hit musical Good News.'' Their pleasant singing has brightened many of our assemblies during the school year. CRY-SLUR QUEEN Barbara Hayward 160 SENIOR BAND This year our Senior Band has achieved success in the musical field. Apart from their usual excellence when playing at assemblies, the members of the band made a fine showing in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. With little- regard for the brisk March winds, our band did us proud by marching up 5th Avenue in pre- cise formation. We are looking forward to similar performances under the capable direc- tion of Mr. Lutri. Are you sure Tommy Dorsey started this way ?” JUNIOR BAND The Junior High Band, under the direction of Mr. Lutri, has played at many of our school assemblies. The band offers a chance for the musically inclined seventh and eighth graders of our school to express themselves as an artistic group. MUSIC WORKSHOP The Music Workshop is a group of the younger students in our school who are interested in music ap- preciation. The members of this group have under- taken such projects as studying different forms of music and going on field trips to the opera. 162 SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA The Senior and Junior Orchestras were organized to help members gain skill in the art of music. Their efforts provide the student body with interesting and imaginative selections at school assemblies, keeping the students informed as to the variety of musical forms. JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA 163 JUNIOR HIGH CHORUS The Junior High Chorus, an- other mode of expression for the seventh and eighth graders of our school, has often performed at school assemblies. The chorus, which consists of one hundred and fifty students, is directed by Mrs. Bronstein, Miss Elchyshen and Mr. Hatchett. 164 GIRLS’ LEADERS CLUB Chosen for their qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and athletic ability, members of the Girls’ Leaders Club learn advanced sports techniques and supervise gym classes. Through this program the girls develop qualities of leadership. They are to be commended for encouraging the spirit of sportsmanship at athletic events. SPORTS 167 SENIOR QUEEN CANDIDATES SENIOR ATHLETIC QUEEN Hope Jimmy stuffed the ballot box. Traditionally, the first homecoming game marks the coronation and reign of the Senior Athletic Queen. This year the candidates were Susan Kilbride, Karin Christiansen, and Suzanne Propper. At a gala half-time ceremony, the ladies-in-waiting were escorted to the dais by Merrill Clark, Robert Gifford and Peter Heneg- han. Susan Kilbride was then crowned Queen by Mr. Reilly. Before we start, I'd like to say a few words . . . Susan thinks this is a PROPPER KARINation. I won!' TRADITION AND PAGEANTRY Our Queen, Susan Kilbride. VARSITY FOOTBALL Division's football season was highlighted in two areas in 1961: the elevation into the North Shore Section II League; and the retention of the Water Bucket Trophy after defeating Levittown Memorial by a score of 7-0. Although the team lost a great deal of the offen- sive line because of graduation, it retained quarter- backing and running with returning veterans, Gary Parker and Tony Pace, respectively. Next year appears promising in the light of increasing team spirit and the performance of many fine sophomores and juniors. MR. JEWELL. Coach 172 Football Team 173 VARSITY SOCCER Sparked by the younger members of the squad, the Varsity Soccer Team had an encouraging season. Levittown Memorial, our archrival, went down to defeat again as Bob Gifford and his teammates out- scored them 3-1. Based on the experience gained this year, Coach Wright and his squad are looking forward to a championship in 1963. SCHOOL SPIRIT PLUS Karin Christiansen, Melissa Graves, Linda Kaiser, Sue Propper, Joan Kashman, Melissa Shaffer, Sue Kilbride, Mary La Mar, Janet Trama, Pam De Gregorio, Linda Cacioli, Kathy Burner VARSITY BASKETBALL This year's basketball team did not have the success of former years. Although hampered by an injury to high-scoring Jim Cain, the team did manage to defeat General Douglas MacArthur High School in overtime, and Port Washington in two overtime periods (73-72). Seniors on the squad this year were Gary Parker (captain), Bob Spadafore, Ross Patton, Tony Pace, Bill Astman, and John Stalberg. The Student-Faculty Game, a tradition at Divi- sion, had seniors from the team participating. The final score was 43-39 in favor of the students. MR. AMEN. Coach 176 Basketball Team We're from Division . . 177 VARSITY WRESTLING This year our varsity wrestling team came in second place only after losing a close match to Mineola. The team did fab- ulously in the county wrestling champion- ships by placing ninth out of all the high schools. Its record this year, eleven wins and four losses, is a tribute to the fine coach- ing of Mr. Wright and to the skill of all the boys on the team. COACH WRIGHT VARSITY BASEBALL In his first year as Varsity Baseball Coach, Mr. Amen has his work cut out for him. Because of alterations in the North Shore Athletic System, Di- vision Avenue will now be playing in the tougher com- petition of Section II. Mr. Amen will be assisted by a number of players who were on last year's champion- ship team. These include ace pitcher Gary Parker, first baseman Bill Astman, and shortstop Jim Cain. The 1962 team will surely maintain the high stand- ard of performance which has long been associated with Division baseball. 180 What do you mean Kaiser can't pitch? The area encompassed by the parabola formed by the trajectory of the ball and a line from the point of departure to the summit of the trajectory, equals the integral of the product of the difference between the ordinates and the differential of x. 181 VARSITY TRACK This year's Varsity Track team got off to a good start by beating Garden City in a dual meet. With seasoned veterans, Don Marcel, Merrill Clark, Don Kanarvogel, and Les Diskin, the team is looking forward to a very successful season. Under the able coaching of Mr. Pivnick, the team looks confidently into the future. 182 GIRLS’ SPORTS BASKETBALL FIELD HOCKEY TENNIS 186 TRACK 188 I knew it wouldn't work . . . with a hole in the top! Cooool!'' This time last year I had five fingers! 'Dream-Dream-Dreanvmmmmmm! The appreciation of knowledge. Oh! Not another one, Mr. Lutri!” GUARDIANS OF OUR YOUTH The thanks of the whole stu- dent body are extended to our two policewomen. In rain, snow, sleet, and hail these ladies carry out their tasks with never a word of com- plaint. Remember, by aiding them, you aid yourself. Division, Division, can’t be beat!” As wc pass through the hallowed portals of Division Avenue for the last time, and confidently face the future, we realize how important our formative years in high school were. We will always remem- ber the fine friends we have made, and the wonder- ful times we have had at Division Avenue. 208 If' ' • '.V £ Wv, • V hr • ■ft . . ,.jj )«% . .it7 5® .-.
