It is the story of the faculty and students whose efforts have gone into the life that is D.P.A. in 1959. As the years go on and we take time to look back, a glance will reveal precious memories enshrined in our yearbook depicting the supreme moments in the grand pageant of our senior year and illuminating the pattern, time-faded on the wall of memory. The members of the senior class of 1959 look back with fond recol- lections of their last year of high school and clearly see their life as a senior, progress on its Way to graduation through the magic of the fol- lowing years. Years from now, our own poor memories will grow dull and uncer- tain, and happenings which meant everything to us may become vague and misty. Even the memory we treasure most, the winning of the cherished Miss D.P.A. crown will fade away and almost die. Then, we shall come across our written MEMOIRS tucked lovingly away in some special corner with all the souvenirs of high school, and we shall re-live all the richness of those happy years. We wish to express the appreciation which we owe D.P.A. for the inspiration of the finer life and can think of no better tribute to our school than this book, MEMOIRS. P , SISTER MARY ROBERT RETURNS from Marillac College where she spent the summer teaching. The schedule for the coming year does not just happen. It is meticulously planned by Sister to fit the requirements of every sister and student in the school. As soon as she can unpack, she will start the big job of managing the affairs of over 180 girls and many sisters, but no one could be more capable than she. THE MOTHERS' CLUB PLANS its activities for the year under the careful guid- ance of the officers of the club: Mrs. Meenan, Mrs. Rotunda, Mrs. Vollero, and Mrs. Pizutto. SISTER AGNETA organizes her schedule to co-ordinate with Sister Mary Robert's. Sister Agneta is superior of the house and must plan a schedule for all the sisters. THIRD ORDER FATHER ANGELUS PRESIDES at the monthly Third Order meetings at D.P.A. Father is director of the Third Order of Saint Francis in the Pitts- burgh Fraternity. It seems that everyone enjoys his visits, for he is kept busy traveling from one school to another to be present at the meetings and to talk with the Sisters and students. Father invited Sister Marie Therese, who helps him in his Third Order work at D.P.A., to go to Saint Bonaventure's College, New York, for the August 1958 Convention of the Third Order. SISTER MARIE THERESE RECALLS the highlights of the convention as she shows Mary Ann Vincunas, Kathleen Smola, Marilyn Winklmann, Shirley Vento, and Adrian Lotz the remembrance Father Angelus gave to the school as a souvenir of the convention. The girls are Crusaders of the Poverello, which means they belong to a special group of the Third Order. Senior Wins Miss D.P.A. Title D.P.A.ites return to school in keen anticipation of what lies ahead - the Miss D.P.A. Contest! They take time to scrutinize each other care- fully, keeping an ideal model in mind. The virtues of a Queen for D. P.A. are not unattainable perfections but are the simple everyday actions of a good Catholic girl. The excitement of the nomination, the joyousness of the election, and the awesome secrecy of the period before the big rally, all add up to that happy occasion when a candidate is presented by her classmates to the student body in some hilarious student-edited skit. Each eager class takes many chance books to gain popularity votes for its nominee who is working of course, harder than all the rest. At long last Christmas arrives, and with the party, comes the announcement of a new Queen of D.P.A. Joy reigns supreme as the seniors discover they have won by a landslide. Victoriously they lead Carol away to plan the big celebration. And oh, what a gala occasion the crowning will be. Carol is not only the choice for Miss D.P.A., but is also the Valedictorian for 1959. if fy, f s M we 5 ' f my , ,.k V Ev GERMAN AND SPANISH LEADERS CONVERSE after a contest in which they came through with flying colors. Marcia Carini, Mary Ann Haber? stroh, Gerry Chessy, and Rose Blevedere equipped Santa Claus with chalk and eraser to help them celebrate their victory. Spanish BOOKS ARE PILED 'UP HIGH on all sides as Mary Ann Haberstroh, Geraldine Chessy, Margie McElroy, and Frances Vizzini realize their im- portance in obtaining material necessary for a book report. Sister Michele is showing the girls how to dig out the important facts. German English Students 1 Math SISTER JANICE DICUSSES the procedure she will use in the New Approach to Algebra. Cecelia Jen- ca, Mary Ann Haberstroh, and Mary Elaine Klein, hope to learn faster than by the old teaching methods. Science THE SCIENCE LAB OVERFLOWS with instru- ments, machinery, and equipment necessary for a course in senior science. Sister Mary Leonard is demonstrating to Frances Vizzini, Gerry Chessy, Carol Oblak, Judy Pison, and Margie McElroy the correct way to operate the bioscope. .A Q' Qt l r Q., ' L .':':' I , ,pkg , 5 1. It is a frigid day, but Rosie has to see the party poster to judge its effectiveness in the window. JULIE MOONEY SHOWS Marcia Carini, Carol Pag- anico, and Mary Ann Ha- berstroh some of her work in china painting. She not only takes china but water color and oil painting. MR. CARDELL LEAVES for D.P.A. to take pictures for the yearbook. He knows what a grueling day this will be and tries to be prepared for all sorts of problems such as climbing ladders, falling into coat racks, and standing on desks and chairs to obtain unique shots. SISTER JULITTA PAINTS Mr. Cardel1's portrait from a picture he gave her. He claims he never has time in his busy career to pose long enough for a portrait, but this doesn't faze Sister Julitta who can do just as well from a photograph. 1 1 SW' 1' 1 - 55223 251 -:WH ' 91 sw ..
