I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Trojan staff of 1970 for ajob well done. Congratulations on an outstanding year- book. Sincerely, BARRON BIRD, Supt. Education is usually defined as the development of knowledge, skill, and ability, or character developed in the process of teaching and training. It seems in these last few years more emphasis has been placed on the first part of the definition, than on the last. This to me seems wrong. To possess knowledge, skill, and ability without character would be akin to a foul: filthy body clothed in silken finery. Character in that quality which permits self- acceptance and provides identity: two basic necessities grossly lacking in the protesting and rebelling groups- we have with us today. Character in that which causes us to understand that rights are earned, and that each right demands a counter-obligation, it further teaches that equality is achieved not legislated. Knowledge, skills, and ability are desperately needed, but to place them in a faulty container is fool-hardy. Honesty, loyalty, and integrity then are those qualities that demand an A+ in any record book. book. Sincerely, HULAN ARMSTRONG
