X Sharing, Giving nd Learning The year 1977 brought many things to DUHS , students. One of the first was our AFS exchange student Denise Quinton. Denise came to us from Australia and is by far the prettiest exchange student ever. Shortly after school began and old friends were re-united, our annual Raisin festival began. This year Miss Julie Burt was crowned Raisin Queen. As late September rolled around so did the Orosi Cardinals. On September 30 the Cardinals came to the Emperors home stadium for the rival football game. Little did they know they would go home de- feated as Dinuba won 21-8. Another new addition to the football field was a first year staff of Junior Varsity cheerleaders. These were three girls selected to follow and cheer for our J.V.'s throughout the year. The girls were sophomores Denise McCord, Gayle Ekizian, and Carla Carver. After a short road trip the Emperors came back to celebrate homecoming. On October 14, before a fine crowd, IVliss Shawn Rielly was crowned 1977 home- coming Queen. When they weren't going to football or basketball games, DUHS students were going to Fantasy ' Company's Saturday Night Live and The Gong Show. Both were a smashing success and a new style for our drama students. While attending our basketball games with hopes of another league crown, our people had something new to watch. 1978 brought DUHS a new girls basket- ball team. The girls now have their own league with JV and Varsity squads. Dinuba students also found that the need for blood was high in our valley. So a day was set up for high school students to give blood and DUHS produced an impressive 58 units. 4' Story Of The Year 7

i sq R. Mr. Hein Retiresp Begins Third Career After 16 years of teaching at Dinuba High School, Mr. Nicholas Hein has retired. Mr. Hein was born in Chicago, Illinois, and attended school there. Shortly after school he joined the Navy. Mr. Hein was one of the courageous men to serve during World War II. He was stationed out at sea when the actual bombing of Pearl Harbor took place. From his 22 year Naval career, he gained much experience and wisdom. When he retired from the service he pursued another career in teaching. After attending the University of Alabama, he taught in many places before settling in Dinuba. In his 16 years here he has taught many business classes including typing, and shorthand. He has enjoyed his years at Dinuba. He has liked watching the students come and go, and grow and mature. During the spring Mr. Hein became very active. For every home swim meet and track meet you could see him timing the swimmers or helping with the track events. Best of all was his distinctive hobby of wearing hats. He was always wearing a different kind of hat. It was his way of having fun and bringing cheer to others. After retiring Mr. Hein has planned on taking a trip with his wife, to Israel. For his third career, he plans to teach classes at his church. Whatever he does, his distinct foreign style will bring joy to those he meets. Recognition 9
