Among other things, the Council collected money from each class for the war orphan and sent it to him with an annual and letters from each member. They also put rubber matting on the gym bleachers, forming, three aisles. They decided to purchase a trophy case for the main building with the flSlOO given them by John Sereno as payment for help given him during the flood. Mr. Sereno's name will be inscribed on a plate on the front of the case. A Student Handbook, explaining school clubs and activities, was com- piled by the Council. A strong campaign was carried on by the Council, in favor of the tax election, which was passed. They presented a skit to the Student Body, showing what might happen it the election was lost. Several members gave speeches about the election to the parents and business people of the town. F. VAYw'L1-4 Gail Denman, who has been quite active in school affairs throughout her three years at D.U.l-l.S., was selected the most popular junior girl. She is a college prep major and manages to maintain a high scholastic average despite her many activities. This year Gail served as vice president of both her class and of the CSF. She also has an interest in music, plays the piano and participated in the Band Show in her freshman and junior years. One of the highlights of this year for Gail was being chosen attendant tc the Raisin Day Queen and another was her election to the office of vice president of the Student Body for next year. Sports seem to be the chief interest of Nick Masich, this year's most popular junior boy, l-le participated in football, basketball and baseball, and was chosen most valuable player for both the varsity football team and the varsity basketball team. Nick, also a college prep major, was vice president of his class in his freshman year, and has taken an active part in many class activities. Next year Nick will serve on the Student Council in the capacity of boys' Federation president. -5. Jerry 9 cole Work ing Hey, you, woke up! Sporting a 5-4 season record, the Emperors finished fourth in their first year in the Northern Sequoia League with one win and three losses. Moving up from the Southern Shasta League, the champion Emperors started the season with wins over Orosi, Mt. Whitney of Visalia and Lindsay. This was the first time since i946 that Din- uba had won its first three games. Kingsburg stopped the winning streak with a thumping defeat and the following week Clovis handed the Emps their first league loss. Dinuba came from behind to beat Exeter, but couldn't quite catch up with the Reedley Pirates, and the Emps dropped their second league game. Dinuba played its best game of the season against Sanger, but a combination of Sanger passes and a bouncing ball cinched the championship for Sanger. In the final game Selma fell before a riled Emperor team. Coaches Jay Acklin, Gene Barbier, and Buzz Champneys were well pleased with the large turnout for the team and with the season record. Coach Acklin rated the Mt. Whitney game as the greatest comeback. After trailing l3 points at halftime the Emps won by 9 points. The Sanger game was rated as the best all-round game. Nick Masich was chosen as the most valuable player and Dick Ogata and Ben Kor were chosen co-captains for the year. Lester Kalender set a varsity school record of 2270 total yards gained from scrimmage over a period of three years. No all-league teams were chosen in the Sequoia League, but Lester Kalender was chosen to the South squad in the second annual ZO-30 Club North-South football game. Gene Johnson, John Osburn and Dick Ogata were chosen as alternates. The teams are composed of seniors from schools in the Central San Joaquin Valley. , .t ,f O SW PAGE FIFTY-FIVE Top row: Don Doyle, Jerry Pratchett, Nrck Mosrch, Lorry Rocker, Art Bronurn, Rlchord Brock, Jock Putnom, Judd Tripp. Bottom rowg Les White, Arom Nerseslon Bemie Corrlllo Ernle Gould Jerry Rondolph Johnwy Osborn Gene Johnson. Having only one letterman returning at the start ot the season, Coach Dodge had to field a team ot little experience against the larger Sequoia League toes. Don Hodges led the team in rebounds, Dick Kawano in assists, and Cliff Stahl on points. The B reserves won 9 and lost 6. In spite ot a small turnout, Coach Murray's boys won half of their games and outscored every opponent in the second half. Captain Gary Weber' and Jerry Mears were the outstanding players. PAGE FlFTY'ElGHT i Basketball Season Summary Stepping into a larger league, the varsity basketball team won the Northern Sequoia League championship trophy in the final game. Winning seven and losing only to defending champions Clovis by two points, the Emperors defeated Reedley on their own court in the last game to earn the right to play Wasco for divisional championship. The divisional game in Dinuba was close and thrilling until Wasco pulled ahead in the final two minutes to win. Coach Buzz Champneys is to be congratulated for building Dinuba into a championship team in only two years. This year the team finished with a l2-6 seas-on record and scored 945 points to its opponents 909 points. The scoring was quite evenly divided among the starting five with Jack Putnam taking league scoring honors. Next year the Emperors are looking forward to successfully defending their title with the remaining varsity players and the B team aspirants that will move up. 241 11,37 Q QL-J i PAGE FIFTY-NINE ggw ,Q rw-Aww'-A, 1 , 1 - , A I va Q s- Front row: Al Bustamante, Larry Parker, Ronnie Collins, Charles Roque, D ean McReynolds, Richard Kawano, Bob Ahl, Paul Ware Don Hodges Back row: Coach Jay Acklin, Nick Masich, Gene Johnson, Gary Bissmeyer, Benjie Carrillo, Jerry Pritchett, Rex Coats, Don Meek, Marion Thomason Gar Foote Varsity Baseball Continues 0 -- When baseball season rolled around, Coach Jay Acklin found Z2 eager boys out tor practice. Cargile, participated in many events this year. They appeared many times on the football field, using individual lights for the first time in the grandstands, to add spirit and color to both football and league basketball games. This marching group was seen in such places as the Reedley Festival, Dinuba Raisin Day, Tulare County Fair parade, Fresno Armistice Day parade. These parades were not competitive. The band was in competition at the All Western Band Review in Long Beach, where they received first place in their division They received the sweepstakes trophy at the Madera Old Timers Day parade, took first in their division at the Fresno Centennial parade, and took third over the entire marching groups at San Francisco. The l7th Annual Music Festival was held here at Dinuba High March 9th, The Dinuba band took a rat- ing af superior, which is the highest rating possible. The Annual Band Show was another outstanding event for the band, lt was held on April 27 and 28. Hard work and long rehearsals proved to make it a near professional performance.
