I am so full of warm feelings for y'all that I do not know where to start. First of all I would like to thank you - the whole community, the teachers, the students, and especially family Boozer - for all the help, patience, and love you gave me. My family here in Texas, the Monty Boozers, are the best family I could ever get. My parents, Monty and Sue, were the greatest parents, and my brothers and sister, Robert, Britt, and Kyla, were just super.! When I first arrived in Dimmitt, some things seemed a little strange to me. There were girls with make-up and curly hair. There were also the football games which I had never seen before. But the fun- niest thing was when we went cruising! It did not take me very long, though, to adjust and appreciate it. Now I must say there is nothing I love more! We had so much fun, and I know, l'm gonna miss it very much when I go back to Germany. Before I finally have to say goodbye, you need to promise me to come and visit me in Germany whenever you get the chance. Since I have learned so much about your country, I would like to show you a little bit of mine. My family, who I thank very much for giving me this year, and I welcome you! Thanks again for making my year so special. I love you all!!! Tschiiss lByel, Anja 48 I People WSH iles Ketoa tHeIIoj, my name is Owen Viles. I am American Field Service student from Feilding, h- Zealand staying here in Dimmitt from July 1983 to ly 1984. I stayed with Doug, Cheryle, and Carla Pybus, 3 throughout the year were extremely good to me host family and as friends. I feel honored to h been placed with such a warm and open family! well as a great A.F.S. orientated town who have gi so much of their time, love, and friendship to me. so grateful for your support in so many ways. have all given me part of yourselves to make ' e . . C I year's stay here in Dimmitt more than just a mem To the football coaches who taught me their s ingly strange game, the band players and dire for fun band trips and sweet music, the Ag de ment for the pleasure of taking care of two ignc woolly sheep, and the fun of country dances, I tl you, for as students we can only do so much, you, people of Dimmitt, make our stay here what it i E noho ra ki tahi au acohag hoa a whaoau, kia lGoodbye to the ones I love, friends and family, tl youl. It was quite an adventure. n though there were hard times, I really oyed it. Everything from food to nsportation is very different. I learned a about new cultures and I hope that Izryone can someday travel to Europe and et its people. Language is a barrier but a ile goes a long way. My summer was the st yet and I learned things that will last a time. KYLA BOOZER The memories of Italy are still so very vivid in my mind that it sometimes seems I never left. In the short time I was there, I learned new customs, a new language, and made new friends. My family really became family in heart. I only wished my experiences could be shared with my friends back home. You, my friends, gave me the support I needed to go on this adventure and for this I thank you! The first thing that came to my mind was that it was going to be for such a long time and the whole thing kind of scared me. But then I thought it would be a lot of fun, and that it has been. I don't know how to thank y'all enough. lt has just been wonderful! When I first got here I was afraid of everything and very shy. I hardly ever said a word, but everybody was so friendly and helpful that I soon started to feel like at home. Staying with the Holcomb family this year has been a good experience! l don't have an older brother at home, but now I know what it's like after having Brad! Dickie has been a wonderful mother, although we were more like sisters. We always had a great time wherever we went! Again I don't know how to thank everybody enough for the wonderful year you have given me. l just know that this is something I will remember for the rest of my life! He is a man with a job. He must be a ruthless dictator at one moment, and a friend the next. He draws sweat and blood but, he also draws respect. He must collect and analyze the data he needs and make a deci- sion. If he makes the wrong decision, his team might lose, a wise decision could bring a win. His teams sink or sail because of his decisions. Players fear him. Players also respect him. He is mighty, he is strong, he is a COACH. He commands discipline. He must find a way to get his players ready for a game. He must reach into himself and find that spark that will light his players' fire. If they have not lived up to his expectations, he has to show his hidden side - and try to strike fear into his team. He is a professor of sports. Some like him, some don't. He must live with that. He is Jekyll, he is Hyde, he is COACH. In this world where sports are looked at almost as a religion, he must pretend to be a god. He is worshipped if he wins - and cursed if he loses. His moves are ques- tioned if unsuccessful by every parent and fan who ever saw a game. He is under scrutiny every time he steps on a field. One minute a man shakes his hand, the next, the man talks about him behind his back. He is flexible, he is harsh, he is COACH. What makes him tick? Why must he choose this pro- fession, when he could be getting paid more elsewhere? What qualities must he possess? He must be alert. He often has to make decisions in the flash of an eye. He must know what is going on at all times. DARRELL WASHINGTON TEIT J 1 I A 1lJf-fu r s fy , n V X , L . He is firm, he is intelligent, he is COACH. We have changed, grown, and learned from all the experiences that we have had together. We have shared so many things - good times, adventures, disappointment, and sometimes just the silence. These memories will be captured in our hearts forever. Wherever we will go, whatever we may do, we will be a part of one another. Soon enough, we must gather all our courage and walk out into a larger world casting away all our childish fears. . . ready to make decisions, mistakes, and to find ourselves. So laugh while the laughing is easy and cry if it is worthwhile for we will never pass this way again. Activities l 137 Game by Game T ey Ma A little bit of heaven! I he Bi-District . . . h ir Wa Au tin Pat easily claims the ball. 1 No gold, but lots of respect! That was the headline in the Castro County News and the sentiments ol all the fans as well. Living in the shadow of last year's 38-0 season, the Bobcats came along and ended up the regular season with a 16-12 record and second in district. The Bobcats seemed to have reached a new plateau upon the entrance of the play-offs. The bl-district game with Spearman was just an indication of the kind of team effort which was to come. Their victory was sweet at 69-57. Then the area game victory over ldalou at 61-47 was the last step into the regional tourney.! These guys. called Destiny's Dwarfs by the Amarillo Globe, became giants! The first game with Crane was hard fought but with a seven-point flurry in the last two minutes the Bobcats were once again victorious with the final score being 59-60, The tension and excitement were at an all time high as the Bobcats entered the game with Abernathy - our district rival who had come out a one-point vlctor In both the district games. Lots of fans and students were repeating the long-time addage and proven point that You may beat Kenneth Cleveland's team twice in a season, but it's nearly impossible to do it three times. The game was exactly what everyone thought it would be - tight from beginning to finish - and what a finish! Wlth six seconds showing and the score tied, Brad Holcomb passed the ball to Dwight McDonald who went the length of the court and pulled up iust inside the free throw line, and with an Abernathy player trying to block his shot, he lumped and Iofted the ball in the final second - the ball swished through the net, the buzzer sounded, and the col- lseum exploded with the sudden sonic boom of 4500 voices - the Bobcats win 63-61 - and with the victory their third regional championship in three yearsl The trip to Austin began with a send-off breakfast for the Bobcats attended by hundred of fans, Probably peo- ple all over the state wondered if they could stay on the floor with the New Boston Lions who were 32-0, but the cat fans didn't wonder - we knew the Cats were for real. The game was close and again the Bobcats had a gasp chance to produce yet another miracle with three seconds left, but is was not to be. The shot missed and New Boston won 60-59. As Don Nelson wrote, The Bobcats may be wondering what if, but their fans aren't. For their followers had had the thrill of seeing a bunch of develop into a great Bobcat team. This year pro- the first team in Dimmitt High School history to win in the state tournament three years in a row. Dwight McDonald became the first Bobcat to go to state tournaments. Brad Holcomb's selection to the ite Class AAA team made him the 30th all-state DHS in boys' basketball. Q S-rs Q' n X l A . ' 5 x ' me ws- -s...-as Regional Championship!
