ERNEST WILLIAM RIDER 4 Ernest William Rider Mr. Rider was born in Craley, York County, Pennsylvania, September 26, 1911. He attended the public schools of York County and graduated from Dillsburg High School in 1928. He entered Shippensburg State Teacher's Col- lege and graduated from there in 1932. He taught in the public schools of Carroll Township, namely O'Hale's and State Road, and was teaching in the 5th'and 6th grades of the Dillsburg Borough Schools at the time of his death. He took an active interest in the work of the schools and community. Students held him in the highest regard and esteem, for to them he was an in- spiration and a help. Great indeed has been his work and host of people, young and old, will ever hold him in greaftful remembrance for the instructive and en- tertaining hours they were permitted to spend. Mr. Ernest Rider to whom this yearbook is dedicated served for many years as coach for the Dillsburg High School baseball team. However. his baseball activities were -not confined to the high school, but he also played on the town team up until the time of his death. That first terrifying but exciting day, we assembled first in rooms three and four. Our home room for that year was to be the Science room. Mr. Fred Wolfe was our home room advisor. The first day we received our books and got acquainted with the school as a whole. Soon after this we held a class meeting in the Science room and the follow- ing officers were elected: President--Ray Byers Vice-President--Paul Davis Secretary--Vivian Baker Treasurer--Patsy Wire Historian--Betty Sullivan In just a couple of weeks we participated in our first magazine drive. Soon after this we enjoyed a party given to celebrate the success of the drive. This party consisted mostly of contest in sports. 1 In October we began plans for our part in the Farmer's Day affairs. For a room project we portrayed the landscaping of a farm. In the fields, which were marked off by toothpick fences, different grains were planted. These grains actually grew and formed real plants. A mountain provided scenery for the background. In the center was a lake with water running in and out, and water lilies floating in the top. We won first prize on this project. We also en- tered a float fMiss Dill Picklel in the parade, this did not win anything. All in all Farmer's Day proved quite profitable. Our refreshment stand was in front of, what is now Wolfe's Restaurant. The rest of the year proceeded smoothly. During this time we sponsored a skating party, put on an operetta fStephen Fosterl in an assembly program. The last day of school we went to Hershey Park on a picnic. We went in private cars. ' We Are Sophomoresz- Again we began our year in an assembly. We were assigned to room two for our home room. Miss Mary Paul was our advisor. Z3 Our first class meeting was held in room four. The officers elected at that time are as follows: President--Edward Knisley Vice-President--Stanley Binner Secretary--Vivian Baker Treasurer--Jean Arnsberger Historian--George Lehmer Along with our Sophomore year we welcomed a new faculty along with a new principal, Mr. Evans. Once again we participated in a magazine drive followed by a dance instead of a sports contest. This was held in the Community Hall at Wellsville, Again in October we began plans for Farmer's Day activities. Our room project was a Southern Plantation scene. Our float was in as a Christmas scene. This year our refreshment stand was in the same place as it was last year. Thus another year proved successful. It was the first year that we had school dances. The dances were held at the Allenberry Inn. In .T anuary we held a skating party at Haar's Skating Rink. We made a profit and had lots of fun. Our Sophomore year we welcomed several students from Wellsville, most of them were enrolled in our class. Our class roll was now increased to sixty students. We brought our Sophomore year to a close with an enjoyabletrip to Hershey Park. We Are .Tolly Juniors:- Once more we began our year with an assembly. We were assigned to room three, which was to be our home room throughout the year. Mrs. Habig fthen Miss Frank! was our home room advisor. Our first class meeting was held in room three. The results were as follows: President--George Lehmer Vice-President--Stanley Binner Secretary--Jean Arnsberger Treasurer--Ortell Drake Historian--Ieane Bock Again we participated in a magazine drive. This celebration was a dance ' at the Allenberry for students only. 24 All other dances this year were open to guests. Again we began plans for Farmer's Day. Room projects were prohibited this year. Our float represented the twelve months of the year. Our stand was in the same place facross from the post officel. This was not as successful as our previous years. In November of that year we sponsored a bake sale. This was held in the front room of Shil1ito's garage. In February we sponsored another skating party. This was profitable and also provided a good nights entertainment for the students. After this we began to plan for the Junior-Senior Prom. This was held on April Z8 at the Allenberry. This same year we selected our class rings. We did this in October and received them the week before Christmas. So much for our Junior year. We Are Seniors:- As before, we began our school year with an assembly. This year as Seniors we occupied room four, with Mr. Kaup as our home room executive. This year as before we participated in a magazine drive, also in Farmer's Day activities. We chanced off a turkey in November and a radio in October. After the holidays we began to work on the yearbook. We sold sweatshirts and jerseys with emblems on them. This brings us up to the present. The future plans are as follows: Some will participate in the school play Tattletale. After this the Senior play. This is planned for the first week of May. The trip will become a reality the week of May 25. Baccalaureate Services will be held May 28, and Commencement Exer- cises the 31 of May. With this we say good-bye to the halls of Dillsburg High. 25 Class Prophecy Today, June 6, 1960, we are gathered in the terrace room of the Hotel New Yorker: the occasion, the reunion of the class of '50 of Dillsburg High School. As we enter the room we are astonished at the beauty of the decoration. At one end of the room there is a stage which is very beautifully decorated and before this is the main banquet table. This is decorated with a huge and glittering class of '50 from which maroon and steel streamers are passed to each place card. The place cards themselves are a great attraction as they have no names on them but instead they have on each one the graduation picture of the guest. The most common expression heard here tonight is remember when? Do you remember the dither the world was in over the atomic bomb and the Russian threat? How one of the sensations of 1950 was the invention of colored television and everyone was buying one of those marvelous machines which would take pic- tures out of the air ? How we were talking about that million and a half dollar school building which was about to be erected just outside of Dillsburg? Tonight, as we look back over the years, we realize how far we have come along the road of life since then, and sigh as we recall those days of companionship which were our School Days. The meeting is called to order by the President, Ortell Drake, now the pri- vate secretary to the Mayor of Philadelphia. As of old, Vivian Baker, our Senior Class Secretary, is taking the minutes. She is now married but she still holds her position as private secretary to the manager of Pomeroy's in Harrisburg. Jean Arnsberger, the class Treasurer, has continued her nursing at the Harrisburg Hospital, and is now the supervising nurse there. Jeane Bock, the class historian, took a postgraduate course in General Business, and is well on her way to becoming the second woman manager of Macy's in New York. Paul Davis, the class Vice-President owns a farm quite near his fathers, and specializes in the growing of prize cattle. These, the officers of the class of '50 are to be congratulated upon the thorough manner in which they arranged this reunion for their fellow class- mates. 26 Oh, by the way, who is that over there? But of course! It's Stanley Binner who owns the farm next to Paul and is engrossed in the newspapers, trying to find if his hybrid corn has won recognition in a nation wide contest. Isn't it strange how the once well known faces have receded to the cor- ners of our memories? Perhaps it would be a wise plan to introduce the class members, and state just what they are now doing. Marjorie Bitner, who intended to be a nurse, but a handsome intern at the hospital changed her mind and she is playing nurse to a pair of twins. Helen Boring, the quietest girl in the Senior Class, is still just as quiet, she now is married and lives in York, Pennsylvania. Esther Boyce and Jackie Price are secretaries at J. C. Penney's in York, Pennsylvania. Ray Byers whose future in the Marines looks very promising, is stationed on Long Island at the present. Gladys Dahr and Glenn Harbold are married and have two girls and a boy. Glenn is now a building contractor. Alberta Darr, after leaving high school, became a missionary and is now stationed in Africa. She is now home on leave. Jim Diller, who also saw the Marines as a future, has just returned from maneuvers in the South Pacific. Lindy Fetrow is now working at the Hamilton Watch Factory, we hear that he is one of the best in precision work. Samuel Folley, always a scientist, has applied his methods to farming and he now is the owner of a very large and productive farm. Reba Garretson, because of her many acquaintances in Mechanicsburg, has now received the position of secretary to the principal. Caroline Harbold, whose ambition was nursing, is married and is helping her husband in his printing business. Z7 Fred Harbold is now married and owns a beautiful farm in the Barrens Valley, one of the garden spots of York Commty. Ralph King, always curious about Physics involved in the behavior of electricity, has employed this interest in establishing himself as as very promi nent electrician. Everyone says he is reliable and that he does excellent work Ed Knisely, who we all read about as the star fullback on the Penn State team has completed his veterinary training and has established a practice in Dillsburg. David Karns, who attended meat cutting school, is now the owner of his own butcher shop in Tennessee. George Lehmer, having now completed his training in surgery is now an associate surgeon in a hospital here in New York. Delores McCurdy and Pat Wire are now married but still have their Delores and Pat Beauty Salon. Gene Miller, a Lieutenant in the Air Corps, is now serving as an air- borne chauffeur for the President. Vernon Sealover, always an experiznentalist, is now trying his luck in raising sheep in the northern part of Pennsylvania. Robert Stiffler, after spending a few years in the Marines, employed his experience in the restaurant business to go into business for himself in Dillsburg. Clyde Wonders, always an electrician at heart, is now an electrical engi- neer for Metropolitan Edison. We realize that some of you have already reached those goals which you sought as you left the Commencement Exercises in 1950, which others still have far to go. To those who have reached their goal we wish continued hap- piness and success, and to those who yet have their goals to attain, we give best wishes in their toils onward and upward. To the Sophomores we leave our past relationship with Mrs. Habig as a home room teacher, and a hope that they will enjoy her as much as we did. May the consolidation of your two home rooms prove pleasant and not too overly crowded. Also our very best wishes for continued success and fellowship as Seniors. To the faculty of D. H. S. as a whole we leave a memory, be it good or bad, also we wish you continued success and happiness as instructors in D. H. S. The way is long and narrow, Fitted with sorrow, toil and strife. 31 Q FQ Q B5 Q CQ X Wmwfzafzimsymgm if Q3 6 Senior Class Junior Class 35 Girls' Glee Club The Girls' Glee Club, consisting of twenty-seven voices and under the direction of Miss Ella May Statler, presented a variety of selections upon sev- eral occasions. Miss Statler has succeeded in blending their voices into a well organized chorus, and favorable comments have been made by all who have heard them. Mixed Chorus Our Mixed Chorus has been, for the most part, inactive in-as-far as en- gagements outside of theschool are concerned. However, this chorus partici- pated in the Yuletide Festivities by singing Christmas Carols in the surrounding communities. Miss Statler, the director, has enrolled several of her students in the county chorus, a compository group of all of the best voices in York County. Future Farmers of America This organization, with Mr. Spoerlein as its instructor, has succeeded in becoming one of the county's most prominent chapters. Mr. Spoerlein's excel- lent guidance, with the co-operation of the students, has brought to the chapter many awards and wide recognition. This year three boys from this chapter re- ceived Keystone Farmer's Degree in the Forum. This degree is awarded to boys who have shown unusual quality in leadership, scholarship and character. Future Homemakers of America Mrs. Groff has devoted her time unselfishly to promoting the welfare of our F.H.A. Chapter. Her efforts have brought her many rewards as the girls enter state and county competition and earn the name of Prize Winner for our home chapter. The girls have organized an F.H.A. This year under the capable coaching of Mr. A. T. Kaup. In winning the championship, the team won four games, tied one and lost one in league competition. North York 2 1 3 l Manchester l l 0 1 Dover 1 0 Z 0 In exhibition games the team played St. Francis Prep at Dillsburg and won by a score of 3 to l. Later in the season the team went to McCasky High School in Lancaster County where the teams played to a 0-0 tie. The team ended its season by playing St. Thomas of Franklin County in the District 3 playoff. St. Thomas won by a score of 6 to l. The following boys made up the Soccor team for 1949. Company was able to erect during the past year this spacious and beautiful Com- munity Building The building is available to the high school in order that they can have ade- - quate space to present their plays and so forth. We congratulate those whose efforts have given to our community the much needed Civic Building. This is not only a beautiful public building, it is an excellent example of the co-operation of those to whose lot it fell to be constructed and equipped. Be- cause they very generously donated their time and efforts to work. supplying all material at cost, we thank them. This was truly a community project, having enlisted the support of all the organizations, and most of the business places in town. This building contains a very large auditorium, which will seat approximately eight hundred, and a kitchen which is fully equipped.
