Roll call was accounted for by Joan Ashcraft, Ray- mond Bruce, George Burris, Karen Caldwell. Mary Christian, Marvin Clark, Pam Clayton, Jerry Donselman, Linda Freibetger, Kenny Hall. Marolyn Hardin, Mike Holland, Bob Hughes, Jerry Johnston, Timmy Kelch. Barbara Lane, Sue Martin. Kay Minger, Linda Morris, Karen Palmer, James Roberts, Ronnie Shelton, Marceda Smith, Houston Id Stanley, Donald Stano, Fred Stegemiller, Tom Wafford, Gail Westerman, Donna Westmeyer, Ron- nie Winlow, and Terr)- Wright. As you can guess, we gave our teacher, Mrs. Secor, plenty of problems. As the year progressed, we learned to read, write?, spell, and count, not to mention the routine fun and games. Then, of , there was the annual Christmas program in which we enthusiastically participated. A more talented first e could not be found. When Ma y rolled around, we were ready to quit school forever and play the rest of our lives, but onward we went. Taking the next step upward to the second grade, we found ourselves missing Raymond Bruce, George Burris, Mary Christian, Timmy Kelch, Gail Westerman, Ronnie Winlow, Terry Wright, and Linda Freiberger. As we soon found out, the second grade proved to be more difficult than the first, but we were tough and decided to try it anyway. With the help of our teacher, Mrs. Rumph, we progressed steadily. It was soon decided that recess was the favorite subject. As fall wore on, we were accompanied by our teacher on nature walks through the color splashed grounds. Coming face to face with winter, once again brought us to our part in the Christmas program. We ended the year by inviting our first grade teacher, Mrs. Secor, who had moved away, to join us on our school picnic at the home of Mrs. Rumph. This proved to be a memorable day in the eyes of 25 second graders. Leaping still forward to the third grade, Marolyn Hardin, Marceda Smith and Houston Smith, were not to be found, but in their place were Maxine Comett, Ronnie Creech, Mary Stewart, and Chalmer Hensley. Here we were greeted by Mrs. Brown. We encountered a new subject this year, history. Since none of us knew anything of this difficult subject, we were all quite amazed and interested. By this time we could read, write, spell, and count better than we ever thought. So when the time for the Christmas program came around, we considered our- selves a little brighter than the year before. As the year progressed, so did we. Wondering when we would ever graduate, we met our fourth year at school with Mrs. Mulford helping us on our way. Again we met more challenges. This time it ' s called geography and English. Enjoying the fun of going on imaginary trips helps us to learn geography. At last we find that we have been using incorrect grammar all of these years. Lesson number 1- Ain ' t ain ' t a word. We wonder if this rule will ever sink in. We ' re given up for hopeless. Being fourth graders, we earn a more important part in the Christmas program. Every year gets better, more than ready when summer comes, especially since our number was increased this year by Docia Love, David Ray, Gail West, Joyce Wright, Arthur Perkins, and Barbara Fischer, although Chalmer Hensley and Barbara Lane are no longer with us. Enter us in the fifth grade minus Ronnie Shelton, Barbara Fischer, and Gail West, but add John Anderson, John Gregory, and Eileen Eaglin. Mrs. Cutter was our guide. We probed deeper into the books of knowledge as the year wore on. After the usual winter activities had subsided and things began to come to life again, we found time for another new experience. If our grades were good enough, we could go to the county spelling bee . After we came home with many certificates and more determined minds, it soon became a fact that everyone was going to try again the next year. Now we found ourselves looking forward to the school picnic. Summer at last. Here we are in the sixth grade. We ' re half way through school at last, just sL more years. Although Arthur Perkins and Mary Stewart are no longer with us, we make new friends with Tom Campbell, Paul Moore, Lanny Ryan, and Alice Crichfield. Mrs. Graver warmly welcomes us. As the subjects become harder, and our education is furthered, we grow to appreciate school more than before. This year when it becomes time for the spelling bee we are right there, ready and willing. This year the rewards are better than they were the year before. This means more awards. But when the time comes, we are feady for summer, and it ' s fun. Stepping into Junior High is an exciting experience for us, especially since we have a new school building to go to. We will be the first class to complete Junior High and High School in this new building. We find things a bit perplexing in Junior High, as we no longer have just one teacher for all of our subjects. Although we are given a sponsor, Mr. Stegemoller, our number is also increased by Donald Berninger, Denver Davies, Jerry Dickerson, Joann Jackson, Gene King, Carolyn Thayer, and Clarence Timberlake. 18 Onward into the eighth grade. Donald Stanley, Joann Jackson, Clarence Timberlake, and Eileen Eaglin are with us no longer, but Laraine Jarvis, Bill Sawyer, Ellen Garfinkel, Wayne Hempfling, and Anthony Gutman join the crowd. As usual the subjects are harder than the year before, but approaching high school we know this is to be expected. Knowing, too, that this is our last year to go to the spelling bee, everyone is as hard as possible. Among the new subjects we have encountered in our two years of Junior High are Home Economics for the girls, and Agriculture for the boys. We soon find these classes interesting as well as rewarding. Being above the grade school has given us special privileges. We now enjoy being class officers, and participating in class meetings, as well as having the always fun class party. Our eighth grade graduation was as beautiful as any could be. For many of us girls it meant our first pair of high heels . At last we are in high school. Walking into high school as all green freshmen do, we soon found that we were in the whirl of things that be- ing a freshman involves. This proved to be a great year for changes in numbers in our class. Denver Davies, Jerry Dickerson, Gene King, Lanny Ryan, Bill Sawyer, Ellen Garfinkel were lost along the way; however, we welcomed Richard Benning, Wayne Disbro, David Elder, Arlene Harvey, Bob Jackson, Garry Laaker, Judy Linkmeyer, Tom Lyons, Terry Pruss, Mary Rueter, Allen Steward, and Bobbie Wickizer. Our class officers were: Jerry Johnston, President; Garry Laaker, Vice President; Mary Rueter, Secretary; Laraine Jarvis, Treasurer; Sue Martin, Reporter; and Judy Linkmeyer, Historian. Becoming freshmen, we were faced with starting to make money for our future class trip, and we soon learned as most of the new classes do that it isn ' t as easy as it may seem. We tried, unsuc- cessfully, to have a dance. Well, we won ' t go into that, but we vowed we would do much better next year. As the year progressed we became more intelligent. When the end of school rolled around, we topped the year by having a good old fashioned hay ride which was enjoyed by everyone. Realizing at last, as most students do as they progress through high school, that the time is going faster than they want it to, we entered into our sophomore year. This year we are without Wayne Hempfling, Laraine Jarvis, and Carolyn Thayer, but we added Joyce Wright and Leatha Atkinson to our list. Class officers for this year were taken over by the female set. They were; President, Sue Martin; Vice President, Karen Palmer; Secretary, Pam Clayton; Treasurer, Joan Ashcraft; Historian, Karen Caldwell; and Reporter, Mary Rueter. We decided to have a D.J. Hop for our money making project this year. It was a great success as we had a big crowd as well as a lot of fun. Of course there are many extracurricular activities in high school to keep us all busy and, of course, we still have our ever present studies to think about. This year brings something we have all been waiting for, Driver Ed- ucation. At last we get to drive? ! As you can guess there were some hair raising moments for the teachers as there are very year. We danced our way through a valentine party when the time came around. Summer approaches us once more. As we reached the upper classmen bracket of Juniors, we didn ' t have Mary Rueter with us, but we were joined by Carol Oswald. We started the year off with preparations for the future prom. We decided to be eccentric and so we planned a prom on a Dutch theme. We worked hard and were quite pleased with the end result. Everyone remarked how lovely it was and seemed to have a good time. We also had a money making project which was again a D. J. Hop. Everything went quite well except for a minor detail like the lights going out. Oh well, what ' s a dance without a little excitement? Another big event during the year was the big day when we anxiously received our beautiful new class rings. They were undoubtedly the prettiest to ever be donned by a graduate of D. H. S. We also turned out to be great actors by the time the class play entitled A Ready Made Family was over. Who knows, we might even go to Hollywood ! Well, onward always, as they say. Look out everyone, we ' re Seniors at last! ! Here we are at the height of our career at D. H. S. and about to achieve our goals. We have almost reached the end of our long journey although Carol Oswald, Wayne Disbro, Karen Palmer, and Donna Homola are no longer with our group. We now find, as do most Seniors, that we wish the time had not gone so fast. We will miss our days at D. H. S. and we hope that our class will be remembered in the future by continuing classes and by the faculty with good feeling.
