Cfaaa Mdfory As I write the history of the Class of '49 my mind wanders back to the day in '45 on which we entered high school. Our class did its share in carrying outthe tradition of the proverbial Green Freshman' by trying to get the right classes on time. ln 1945 the Freshman class consisted of 27 members who were as follows: Paul Vorn- heder, Paul Kissel, Harry Dennis, Delmar Stevens, Dale Naigele, Leland Scudder, Elea- nor Snyder, Eileen Kelly, Pauline Kuhlman, Elaine Gerkepott, Loretta Cutter, Leola Housemeyer, Shirley Cash, Joanne Scudder, Lois Walcott, ThelmaKnigga ,RuthEaglin, Evelyn Westmeyer, Wanda Disbro, Nellie Ann Davies, Mary Opal Elder,Dorothy Adams, Robert Adams, Lonnie Hubbard, Donald Scudder, Charles Block, and Mildred Cutter. Mr. Cairns was our principal and Mr. Brown was our sponsor. Everyone returned to Dillsboro High School in- the fall of '46 except Harry Dennis, Lois Walcott, Ruth Eaglin, Wanda Disbro, Robert Adams, Lonnie Hubbard, Donald Scudder, and Nlildred Cutter, Rayrnond Walston and Garfield Walton came into our class. With the help of Mrs. Talmage, our sponsor, we sold ice-cream at school during the noon hour. All of our classmates returned in our Junior Year except Joanne Scudder and Dorothy Adams. We had one new pupil, Edward Antras. In October we gave the play 'Papa Says No' under the direction of Mrs. Winslow. We chose Mr. Vinup as our sponsor. We honored the seniors with a banquet at the Sanitarium and a prom at the school building . Nettie Griffin was crowned queen. In our Senior year everyone returned except Mary Opal Elder, Edward Antras, and Raymond Walston. Gracie Jackson was the only new student. We chose Mr. Cairns as our sponsor. We challenged the Juniors to a magazine campaign. The outcome was rather close but we managed to come out on top. Sometime next spring we hope to take a trip to the Smoky Mountains. April Z9 and 30 we plan to give our Senior Class Play. Although it has not occured as yet we plan to have our Baccalaureate Service on May 8 and Commencement will be on May 9. C G65 MOP QC? I awakened suddenly from a deep sleep and was surprised to find myself in unfamil- iar surroundings. I looked in all directions and could see nothing until suddenly there appeared before me a small square building. I I entered and found a single room containing nothing but a chair sitting against one wall. As I stood there wondering what to do next, a mysterious voice ordered me to sit down. I did as I was told and then I noticed that the opposite wall was covered by a white screen. As I watch, an island appears on the screen and a moment later I recognize it as Alcatraz. The prison guards were changing shifts and I was rather surprised to see Charles Block hand his gun to another guard and with a sigh of relief, start back to his quarters there on the Rock, The voice spoke, informing me that Charles is engaged to a former classmate, Elaine Gerkepott. Elaine lives in San Francisco and is widely known as a writer of articles on social problems. The scene suddenly shifts to a small town in Alaska. Over the door of a small log cabin there is a sign reading: U.S. Government Assay Office. Inside is Paul Kissel bending over a table and working busily. It seems as if Paul came to Alaska to home- stead but changed his mind when he was offered his present job. He is apparently pleased with his job, testing samples of gold are brought in by prospectors. Once again the scene changes and this time a large circus appears. Under the big top Bine Stevens and his wife, formerly Thelma Knigga, are making the final preparations for their acrobatic show. Bine and Thelma were married soon after graduating from High School andjoined the circus a short time later. After much hard training and prac- tice they have become one of the country's top acrobatic teams. The circus fades away and the fanmiliar streets of Dillsboro are now visible on the screen. In the manager's office of the world famous Health Resort sits Paul Vornheder. Paul amazed the business world when he became manager of the Dillsboro Sanitarium Company at the age of 19. He owns his own hotel in Indianapolis and merely keeps his job in order to have something to do. In the dining room a party is in progress. It is in honor of Eileen Kelly who has just been elected Governor of Indiana. Eileen always had the characteristics of a politician. Eileen gives much of the credit for her success to Gracie Jackson, her campaign manager. It was a close election but as Gracie carries a lot of weight in Southern Indiana, she finally tipped the balance in her direction. Now the scene changes to Friendship where Pauline Kuhlman owns and operates one of the country's most elaborate night clubs. Movie stars and foreign dignitaries travel hundreds of miles in order to see her floor shows and to hear the star of the musical program, Evelyn Westmeyer. Evelynhas been offered contracts with several night clubs in New York but for some unknown reason she has chosen to remain at Friendship. 13
