Shakespeare Editor in Chief BRENDA F. CROWDER Likewise, the members of the Class of 1968 are ending one of the many roles they will play. This exciting new chapter is added to a vastly changing Dillard script. Through four acts and in¬ finite scenes, we have appeared, taken our places and repeated our lines. And now, the class members of 1968 rush to take their places to act the final scenes of this human play at Dillard High. When the volume ends, we will exit from the Dillarfl stage to seek roles in other plays. But before viewing th final scene of this play, let us scan what we have acted already in the happy days spent at our Dear Alma Mater. The Senior Class DILLARD HIGH SCHOOL presents the 1968 DILLARDITE Vol. 13 Goldsboro, N. C. We Dedicate To the parents, who with love and understanding have given a tremen¬ dous amount of energy, guidance, loyalty, and re¬ sourcefulness to make our school and community life sig¬ nificant and prosperous, we dedicate this annual. You have con¬ tributed unselfishly and unbiasly to the welfare and future existence of all people of these fifty United States of America, provided that it serves for the hope and joy of helping others. Accordingly, with worth and esteem, for an immeasurable number of years, graduating classes have felt the intrinsic importance of your influence, to the extent that your perpetual devotion, wisdom, and counseling have made our paths brighter as we ' ve strived to reach heights of greater merit. Although we can never hope to truly repay you for all you have done for us, this is our promise to you, that we will continue the struggle of life, that we shall attempt to reach the high plateaus you have led us to. Indubitably, your attempts to help make our ambitions come to life for the betterment of our lives have helped immensely. To those we hold most dear, we the SENIORS OF 1968 dedicate this book to you, OUR DEAR PARENTS, with eternal grat¬ itude and the deepest of affection. GRADY Chairman The Guidance Department of Dillard High School is composed of two counselors and one secretary. Mrs. M. D. Grady is the full-time counselor for grades 10 through 12. Mrs. H. K. Barnett is a part-time counselor for grade 9. Her other duties are performed at Carver Middle School. The guidance counselors work as coordinators in a school. All guidance programs should be different to meet the needs of each individual school. The guidance department serves as an aid in helping the individual develop a realistic picture of himself. Also, help him to make decisions for the future. It also encourages the individual to progress as far as his abilities and intellect will let him. Too, it provides information about the individual which will help him find a successful career. Mrs. Pittman takes notes as Mrs. Grady (seated) and Mrs. Barnett (standing) counsel. Department of Business The philosophy of the business education department is the result of an awareness of the constant day-to-day changes in our business world, and the role to be assumed by our youth if they are to be equipped to take their places in our American Society. We believe that two guiding principles will lead us to the successful accomplishment of providing educational discipline to all youth: (1) Training for a general basic busi¬ ness education, and (2) Specialized training designed to de¬ velop knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary for guidance into and advancement in our world of work. The program was sponsored by the Social Studies Department in commemoration of Negro History Week. Soraya Moore presided. Appearing as guests were Attorney Samuel Smith Mitchell of Raleigh, Attorney Arthur L. Lane of Fayetteville, and Attorney Earl Whitted of Goldsboro. The 14th Amendment was the target of the three lawyers, which they called the most important document of the times in the field of civil rights in the last 100 years, during which the greatest advances have been made in the last 10 years. Selfishness of people was cited as the cause of the slowness of the effectiveness of civil rights. The speakers did not think it will take another 100 years for the Negro to obtain equality. On the subject of Black Power and Rap Brown, it was concluded that this is just a phase. Black Power is a label. The speakers stated that for people to take matters into their own hands would be foolish, but to participate in political and economical matters would be beneficial. Each speaker spoke for five minutes and then were asked questions by a panel of students. Rev. H. V. Brown, retired principal of Dillard High School and author of two books on Education in North Carolina, was given a tribute by Randy Brown. Remarks and acknowledgements were made by Dillard Principal, Mr. John H. Wooten, Sr. Music was furnished by the choral club under the direction of Mrs. Eleanor Harris. Miss Yearbook Miss Yearbook MISS EDNA L. STOKES The coveted title of Miss Yearbook 1968” goes to the lovely and talented Edna L. Stokes, a Senior at Dillard High School. At Dillard, Miss Stokes has maintained a B average while participating actively in the Mathematics, Science, Library, Drama, French, and Band Clubs. Pictured below is Miss Stokes as she engages in two of her leisure time hobbies -- making ceramics and playing the piano. A better choice could not have been made by anyone! MRS. T. F. SMITH MRS. R A SILER 1968 Senior Class Advisors MR. R. O. HAWKINS In Memory I ' d like to think when life is done That I had filled a needed post; That here and there I ' d paid my fare. With more than idle talk and boast. That I had taken gifts divine. The breath of life and manhood fine. And tried to use them now and then. In service to my fellow men. Class of ' 68 ' Class With happy faces, inquisitive minds, and searching eyes, the Freshman Class of 1964-65 entered the buzzing halls of Dillard High School. That year was dedicated in finding ourselves, academically. As for leadership, beauty, and even in scholar¬ ship, we students demonstrated high potentiality as outstanding Dillardites. Bobby Bryant was our Freshman president and climaxed his year with a dynamic speech, cen¬ tered on the theme Freshmen Invade Dillard ' s Curriculum on Freshman Day. Brenda Crowder reigned as 1964-65 Miss Homecoming Queen. Though the National Education¬ al Development Test was a brain stimulizer, Judity Melton and Catherine Washington received certificates of merit for their high scores. Even though the word sophomore means half foolish and half wise, we decided to linger more toward the latter--wise. Charles Coley was elected Boy of the Year and this title did not only give him honor, but his class. There were twelve probation¬ ary members of the Rosa Gray Chapter of the National Honor Society that represented the class. Our class was not a composite of geniuses alone; for there was loveliness. Linda Atkinson accepted the throne as 1965-66 Miss Homecoming Queen. We extended an invitation to the student body to engage in our celebration of Sophomore Day. Our ingenius theme was Attack, Education Is Just Beyond the Hills ... Charge . It was presented to the school by our president, Bobby Bryant. Here again we accomplished fame and glory. Finally, we reached our Junior year, each of us striving for maturity in areas of school life. These areas are listed as charm, sports, scholarship, character, leader¬ ship, service and sociality. Brenda Hollins began our maturity scale by wearing the crown of 1966-67 Miss Homecoming Queen. George Wynn represented the school and class at the Shrine Bowl Football Game. Once again we smoothed the complexity of standardized tests. Twelve students qualified for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Scholarship and five for the National Merit Qualifying Test. Our class had eleven students to me ' et the criteria for the Rosa Gray Chapter of the National Honor Society. The whole world was a stage for us; for we certainly performed great roles. The first role was on Junior Day, when all our talented students delighted the student body. Th e second role was during the night when our brilliant thespians made their entrances and exits in the Junior Class Play, Guest in the House. Our last role for that year was performed in our spacious gymnasium on the night of the Junior-Senior Prom. Every¬ one possessed an air of royalty. During the summer, our busybees attended summer school on various college campuses of the United States. Valarie Harris studied music at Bennett College; Brenda Crowder and Soraya Moore studied mathematics and science at North Carolina College; and Zenobia Washington studied dramatics at Hampton Institute. The Junior Class of 1966-67 most definitely had year-around achievements. Now the year has come, that long-awaited and yet sad year, our Senior year. At our commencing of life and ending of our school days, we left Dillard with our many rewards. history Brenda Crowder was named editor of our yearbook, this was a way of expressing, remember us. Arlette Sampson was crowned Miss Homecoming Queen. This was a spectacular event because her mother was crowned Miss Alumni and they rode in the Dillard parade as First and Second ladies. This year also commenced four straight years of winning the crown of Miss Homecoming by the same class section spearheaded by Mrs. T. F. Smith. Richard Croston, Judity Melton, and Catherine Washington were awarded scholarships for excelling on the National Merit Scholarship Test. This was a way of saying that tests are really easy to conquer. Our president, Joel Silver on Un¬ veiling Night spoke on our motto: The Escalator To Success Is Broken, We Must Walk All The Way ; beautifully painted by Bobby Monk. This was a way of saying that we cherish your thoughts. In essence, the years have been rewarding and inspiring. So Farewell Alma Mater, Goodbye. Historian - Zenobia Washington THE ODE TO FAREWELL - Class Song By Valarie Harris Oh Dillard we love you and will cherish your thoughts, You ' ve helped us so much and you’ll dwell in our hearts, An though we will leave you we ' ll never forget, The happiest days we ' ve spent yet. Dear teachers we thank you for all you have done, You’ve shown us that learning can also be fun These mem ' ries of you we will ever hold true, Dear teachers we love you, we do. An now Dillard High it ' s that sad time again, When we must bid you farewell ' tis the end. So now we leave you and sadly we sigh, Farewell Alma Mater, Good-bye. THE BEGINNING OF TOMORROW By Doris Marie Daniels We came to Dillard with our minds made up, To take full opportunity of the golden cup, As we crave knowledge more and more. We struggle to reach tomorrow ' s door. We knew in order to conquer our fate, Our standards would have to be high and great. We would have to work hard from night to morn, To achieve the success that was yet unborn. Tis a stairway we must climb, To make tomorrow a treasure to find. We are struggling on with the will to win, Sharing losses with a cheerful grin. We rose to fame as years went by. Our spirits strong and ever high. Though tomorrow seemed to be years away. We knew the beginning was here today. We look on Dillard with joy in each heart, Knowing we must soon depart. We shall remember you while we excell, And offer a mighty Tiger yell. We ' ll always remember your cheerful calls, Up and down your merry halls. For nevermore will we be there. Safe from harm and free from care. Such parting has touched with its unrest, A tender nerve in every breast. Together we approach tomorrow’s door, To find the success that lies in store. With fond affections our memories shall dwell Around the school we love so well. Your teachings shall never fade away. For the Beginning Of Tomorrow has begun today. Campus Capers Welcome to Nursery A Stokes Kindergarten Here in our classroom, we engage in a variety of activities: They include: creative painting, singing, coloring writing, learning poems and small words, as well as learning to recognize our names, the alphabet and numbers when we see them.
