THE 1965 DILLARDITE Volume Ten Presented by The Senior Class of Dillard High School Goldsboro, North Carolina Foreword Failure, success, crisis, decision, time and circumstance . , . these we will encounter in our uphill journey. We wonder why and when each will stop climbing, but we cannot know what lies so far beyond our limiting conceptions. To reminisce memories of joys and sorrows that have passed is what makes our climbing a realization of what perhaps will lie beyond the peak of the hill. The choicest part of our school days is yet to be skimmed by the unseen fates that await us on our journey up. We thrust forth all our strength in order that we might see a broader view. It is in this spirit that the 1965 DILLARD- ITE Staff presents a yearbook with the theme, THE HIGHER THE CLIMB THE BROADER THE VIEW. Table of Contents DEDICATION IN MEMORIAM ALMA MATER EDITOR APPRECIATION ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES SENIORS ADVERTISING The contents of this yearbook are dedicated to our parents because they have shown us faith, love and guidance throughout the past twelve years. We know that in the future we shall look to higher horizons, but the memory of Dillard and the past will still linger. Parents, with this book we leave you memories of the days we cherish. Accept this dedication as a part of our appreciation for your devotion. i n Memoriam MISS ROSA GRAY You achieved success because you lived well, laughed often and loved much; you gained the respect of intelligent men, and the love of little children; you filled your niche and accomplished your task; you left the world better than you found it; you never lacked the appreciation of earth ' s beauty or failed to express it; you always looked for the best in others and gave the best you had; your life was an inspiration and your memory is a benediction. A Place School ' We believe in our school as an institution so organized and carried on as to give to boys and girls a triple training that is necessary for a well-rounded life. We believe firmly in the co- ordinate training of the head, the heart, and the hand; for though each one is necessary, neither can be of great use alone. We believe that a life worth living must embody mental satisfaction, i industrial pursuits, and a spiritual outlook, therefore, our various subjects and activities have Called Home Creed been so planned and selected by us and our elders as to ultimately develop one o? more sides of our educational triangle. We pledge that in all our endeavors we shall strive to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually strong, for we know that only such a triple development can make a real life, and in the final analysis a true American citizen. Alma Mater Lift happy voices, praises unfold Hail to the Blue and Gold. Let songs of gladness rise to the sky For Dear, old Dillard High, And strive to show, as on we go Ability and power To do the right with all our might Thru every changing hour. With hope and loyalty and courage Our lives shall e ' er be blest; And ever for our Alma Mater We will work; we will do our best. As on we go, our aim shall grow, Our cheers will ever cry To do the right with all our might For thee, Dear Dillard High. - By Mrs. Thelmal. Johnson SCHOOL MOTTO Let ' s Have The Best School -By Lucy B. Thompson Class of 1928 The members of the 1965 Dillardite Staff have worked diligently to provide for you a permanent record of the experiences we have had at Dill- ard. In the beginning we had the usual problems that face a yearbook staff. There were many decisions to make but once they were resolved we worked at a hectic pace to meet our deadlines. We hope this yearbook will serve as a reminder of the happy days we spent here at our dear Alma Mater. In Appreciation MRS. T. O. BROWN Mathematics we learned with you was BEAUTIFUL and filled our hearts with joy and desire to go forth and survey All of the unknown areas of that worthwhile branch of the great DISCIPLINES and UNKNOWN FACTORS, MRS. T. M. JOHNSON MUSIC we heard with you was more than music And bread we broke with you was more than bread. Without you, all is desolate. Guiding each follower toward his goal with dignity, love and fame; each honored position is a life devoted that we might reign. ADMINISTRATION DR. N. H. Curtis Phillips and Frederick Wiggs received certificates of merit at the district and State Drama Festivals. As seniors, 1964-65, we have reached the heights and achieved much success. We produced the Senior Play, a three act comedy, Half Way to Heaven. The senior class of 65 changed traditions and had an early un- veiling on October 29, instead of the usual time in February. There are more students participating in the honor program than students of any other class, Sandra Durante won first place in a Regional Beauty Contest held in Wilmington, N. C. Doris Bowden was elected president of the Association of N. C. High School Library Clubs. Beverly Best won Miss Jabberwock for Delta Theia Sigma Sorority Scholarship project. The Class of 65 has conducted itself in such a manner that it may be said that this is the best class that has ever been graduated from Dillard High School.
