Johnson L ucy B-TnoMp50N CIr5S of r7$ SCHOOL CREED We believe in our school as an institution so organized and carried on as to give to boys and girls a triple training that is necessary for a well-rounded life. We believe firmly in the coordinate training of the head, the heart, and the hand; for though each one is necessary, neither can be of great use alone. We believe that a life worth living must embody mental satisfaction, industrial pursuits, and a spiritual outlook; therefore, our various subjects and activities have been so planned and se- lected by us and our elders as to ultimately develop one or more sides of our educational tri- angle. We pledge that in all our endeavors we shall strive to grow mentally, physically, and spir- itually strong, for we know that only such a triple development can make a real life, and in the final analysis a true American citizen. School Oun Sufiftonte'16 ponetowict DMtvut at Ti ond s4ctiuitie4. Militi m mm (, ;.: ■ i;- - ; v3 'pon£4wicC Our high school days are filled with cherished memories. Some you re- member better than others, such as that important game you wanted so much to win, your first school dance, the thrill of being a senior, and at last the wonderful feeling of accomplishment when that coveted diploma is placed in your hand. The long hours and the deep thought that went into the making of this yearbook by no means represents all the extreme joys we shared and the mem- ories we shall cherish for Dear Old Dillard. We do hope, however, that each page will attempt to recall the day, the activities and the true friendships established as we toiled through four years of high school history. We’ve pulled our load. The strength of our Alma Mater and the continued impression it makes on the world now rest with our poster- ity. Let us always strive for the best school. THOMAS FRANKLIN MRS. FRANK RE MS BURG DR. CON T. MCDONALD DR. N. H. SHOPE Superintendent of Schools Secretary to Board SUPERINTENDENTS MESSAGE The purpose of American Education in general, and the Goldsboro City Schools in particular, is to instill in students lofty principles and to live in and contribute to the American Democracy. It is very important that students be given the tools which will make these objectives possible. To knights in the days of old, chivalry meant reverence for God, loyalty to coun- try, respect for women, mercy to defeated foes, sympathy for the weak, and high sense of honor. These basic ideals of chivalry form much of the foundation for the kind of democracy that we wish to have in America. You, the Seniors of Dillard High School, have represented your school in an admi- rable way, learned the basic skills which will enable you to continue your education, accept a place in the labor force, assume a position of respect in the society in which you will live. It is my sincere hope that you will enjoy success and find happiness in whatever you do in the future. Cordially yours, N. H. Shope, Superintendent £cCacatco t LLOYD FONVIELLE Chairman MRS. W. A. SHEPARD, JR. J. HARRY MUIR, JR. Occi ‘P'UttccfiaC MR. JOHN H. WOOTEN, SR. Dear Staff and Class: Congratulations! You accepted and conquered a mammoth undertaking. You have done a most appreciative job for all of us here at Dillard High. We thank you for such splendid eiforts. I was pleased to have been so closely associated with the work of the 1963 DILLARDITE. Be- cause of my close association, I am fully aware of the sincere devotion, bountiful spirit and burning enthusiasm that you put into your work on this publication. I hope that the rich mem- ories captured here will more than repay you in the years ahead as you reflect upon your many experiences at DHS. This publication should help you to recall what your teachers, your peers and your community tried to do for you. You must remember that you were a part of the chal- lenging ’60’s, the North Carolina program of Quality Education, the Dillard Gymnasium and the ’’revival of learning” at Dillard High. You must continue to give your best to the world. You should continue to share your richest experiences with others as you have done so very well in this annual. Remember - This is the best school that I know because I am doing so much to make it so. Affectionatelv yours, j j ’ y J b ' J. H. Wooten, Sr. Principal s4 7'ic ute t Oun. Decvi 7eae6en4- Each year with outstreched arms you open hearts and souls to Tots still wondering, searching, seeking A goal to call their own. You scatter seeds and dreams you think you n’er again shall see. You harvest mortals and shelter every action - good, bad, promising, rewarding. You smile to share a love that spurs us on. At times discouraged, you count but lost the deeds you've done, the words you've said. You wish that we live, not merely drift; possess ideals that lift, wisdom that reigns, Learning that conquers ignorance and fears. We are grateful to you, Dear Teachers. Keep your standards high for you are building today for a free world tomorrow. We are weak, some strong, yet all determined to look with sorrowed pride toward that future Promised through the dreams you’ve stirred. Listen! Listen! According to a recent bulletin there will be an important meeting of the Senior Class of Dillard High School tonight at 8 P. M. The meeting is called to draw highlights of four years at dear old Dillard. The Shrine of golden opportunities appeared in 1960 when we made our first step into high school. Mr. Hugh V. Brown was principal, Lula Smith was class president and Sonja Hobbs served as recording secretary. Branching off into academic, vocational, industrial and general curricula we met with strong competition from the upper class- men. Eleanor D. Whitfield, supported by our vigorous efforts, won second place in the school wide contest for Miss Homecoming 1960. Sadness fell upon our freshman year when Alonzo Cherry passed. With our second step into the Sophomore year we triumphed with Mr. John H. i Wooten as principal. Elgin Reid was president, Doris Harper was Vice President, and Muriel White was Recording Secretary. The third step was into the limelights of Sophisticated Juniors. Class officers were Harold Batiste, president; George McDaniel, vice president; Norma Cherry, Re- cording Secretary. We recall the sensational presentation of our Junior’Play, Terror In The Suburbs. Continuing with full strength ahead, we moved into preparation for the long-awaited Junior-Senior Prom. The Prom was, as our principal stated, the best yet. Names of our classmates dominated the list of officers elected to the Student Council during 1962-63. Harold Batiste was president, George McDaniel was Vice, Carolyn Robertson and Norma Cherry were Corresponding and Recording secretaries. Lula Smith reached for president of the State Student Council and won. What a gala year! Now, in the final year of high school memories, we are led by President Lula Smith, Vice nresxuent, Thomasine Hardy; Recording Secretary, Norma Cherry and Corresponding Secretary, Minnie Baldwin. Our lives are beautified with varied and i illuminating experiences. We have had our ups and downs, but we have the right to claim all good accomplished. With patience and perseverance the survivors of previous years mount the precipice for seniors only. A Class As A Unit is the last impression. Our last assembly haunts us with these lines from the pen of Longfellow’s Psalm of Life, We can make our lives sublime And departing leaves behind us Foot prints on the sands of time. Historian Minnie Baldwin DtCtancL Gun s4( tta Tune: Tschaikowsky’s Piano Concerto (B Minor) Dear Dillard High Now We launch our rocket high to success Our Alma Mater, Blest! Dear Dillare High, soon we’ll part, Our future lives to prepare, Of memories in our hearts We never shall be unaware. We’re confident of success, Because, with youth, we are Blest; For we shall break the chains which hinder literacy, And smooth the paths, the glorious paths, to great democracy. The brand new world, we shall see, Demands Ability. Like satellites, will revolve, A globe of problems, now to solve. We must invest energy, combined with industry, To reach our goal, we must have faith and trust; The world we build-will be forever free-will e’er be free. Dillard we Love, God bless these sacred walls; Spacious and Tall, with busy halls, knowledge and power free. Now we can see, opportunity you open the door and many more will build a world that’s free. If we, the youth, set the pace, then god will guide us through Grace. Although we must say ”Adieu” to Loving Parents - Friends so true. We raise our voices, tonight In ferment harmony bright; How good it is to join in joyful Glee, together, with beauteous tone or lovely song and melody. Dear Dillard High Now we launch our rocket high to success Our Alma Mater - Blest!
