You will have com- pleted a program of studies and a part of your education. You have gained experiences and knowledge which will help you to continue further study or to endeavor to find a place in the business world. It is my sincere hope that you will become worthy citizens of the community, state and the nation To those of you who are returning to Dillard High School next year, I urge you, with the assistance of your parents and teachers, to select courses which will best prepare you to be worthy citizens in our democratic society and will bring financial success in your chosen occupation. Knowledge alone will not result in a full and happy life, it is necessary for each of you to develop an aware- ness of spiritial values and a strong moral character. Dear Dillardite Staff and Class: Allow me to express sincere appreciation and hearty commendations for undertak- ing such a mammoth project as has been yours in connection with the 1961-62 edition of the DILLARDITE. Long live the memories of your days here! Higher and higher should be your goals and aims because you matriculated here! What places and what offices will you fill? What contributions will you make? How much better will the world be now that you are closer to adulthood and have suc- cessfully completed 12 years of formal education? Graduates with plans for tomorrow must face such challenging and demanding questions as these. My challenges to you shall continue to be these: That eyes have not seen and ears have not heard all that is in store for Dillard High School if we will strive to work to our maximum and show sincere and dedicated interest in all that we try to do here. Jerry Simmons was elected president of the Freshman class and under his leadership, ability, our class moved forward. Our advisors were Miss A. J. Riggsbee, Miss S. E. Jones, Mrs. C. M. Barnes, Miss V. M. McLean, Mr. R. O. Dowery, Mr. W. P. Siler, and Mr. N. A. Stitt. We were very active our first year. Gloria Swinson won third place as Miss Homecoming, we also became members of the Student Council and joined other activities. Our principal was Mr. F. G. Shipman. With his help, we were ready to make a step forward. We were sad to have our principal, Mr. F. G. Shipman leave, but under the principalship of Mr. H. V. Brown, we moved steadily. We had thirteen members on the Honor Society. Having done so well, we took another giant step. The third year at Dillard High School and feeling very superfluous to be called Juniors, we tried to live up to our name Sophisticated Juniors. During this year we had many students competing in several activities. Some were successful and some were not, but we showed much leadership. Sandra Grantham placed third in the MMiss Homecoming exercise. Wesley Joyner placed third in the Omega Talent Hunt, Shirley Sher- ard won first place in the Oratorical Contest; Blanche Skinner was elected Miss Varsity. There were thirteen students on the Honor Society and showing much ability to carry on the next year. During that year, Mary Bryant won the U. N. Speaking Contest. Now Seniors, the class that all Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors seem to envy and admire; we have pushed upward to the level we now stand. This year we tried to live up to our name Dignified Seniors. Raymond Swin son was elected president of the Student Council, John King, president of the Senior Class and Cardriner Bowden ° was elected Miss Homecoming. We were very sorry to lose two of our dear classmates during our Senior year; Rosa Ellen Forte, and Wilbert Earl Stevens were fatal victims of automobile accidents. For some of the seniors, this year will mean an end to formal education; but for still others, this milestone will only open avenues of study. We are confident that the main concern of the members of the class of f62 will be to help make this present world a better place in which to work and to live. -r.
