A ..a You have understood our problems, assisted us with patience, listened to our complaints with an admirable smile, inspired us with confidence, encouraged us when we were disheartened, and enhanced our chance for success. Words can’t express our appreciation for your many contributions: but to show how much we love, honor, and respect you, the Senior Class dedicates the ’57 DILLARDITES to MISS CHARITY E. HATCHER and MR. HUGH V. BROWN. etUc tcott 0po'iecu ict The yearbook staff of the senior class feels that our class has developed qualities expected of young men and young women and the preparations needed to succeed in the age we now are facing. During our high school career, events have happened that will remain in our memories long after school days have ended and we wish to encourage the retainment of these memories. We leave our yearbook as a reference and reflection as we reminisce our high school days. Names and faces of friends will long be forgotten but THE DILLARDITES 57 will become our main source of memory - a source by which it may be possible to relive the wonderful days spent at Dillard High School. It is difficult to produce a book that every one would recognize as excellent because of the differences of ideals held by the class. We cannot capture all the excitement and pleasure we have witnessed and enjoyed and we cannot print an individual book of memories for every class member, therefore, we hope our readers will be considerate of the students who worked strenu- ously and tirelessly in this large task we have thus undertaken. This yearbook will reveal the highlights of the lives of about one hundred forty-two seniors, whose activities will be found herein - our clubs, our faculty, and the results of four years of training between the walls of Dillard High School. As a constant reminder - as a source of memory, information, and inspiration we so assign the following pages of THE DILLARDITES 57. Goldsboro, North Carolina December 17, 1956 % To the Editor and Committee for the 1957 Yearbook Greetings: Happy are they whose ’annals’ are brief, ” one philosopher said. Another, ”He who cuts off twenty years of life cuts off just so many years of fearing death. ” I would say, Long Live the Senior Class ; for its bold venture in this tremendous undertaking. Long years from now, you will look back upon this effort and accomplishment with more delight than you might be able now to estimate. It will bring your classmates back into your memory as nothing else can. It will also encourage future classes to lift high the standard you have so well maintained. It will constantly bring Dillard history into new focuses which should make for greater accomplishment. So, please accept my heartiest congratulations for your wonderful production and my fond hope that each of you will find or make a place in the world worthy of the tradition of Dillard High School. Though thou have time but for a line, be that sublime; not failure, but low aim is crime - Affectionately yours, H. V. Brown, Principal ALMA MATER Blue and Gold” Lift happy voices, praises unfold Hail to the Blue and Gold. Let songs of gladness rise to the sky For Dear, old Dillard High And strive to show, as on we go Ability and power To do the right with all our might Thru every changing hour. With hope and loyalty and courage Our lives shall e'er be blest; And ever for our Alma Mater We will work; we will do our best. As on we go, our aim shall grow, Our cheers will ever cry To do the right with all our might For thee, Dear Dillard High By Mrs. Thelma I. Johnson Sc6ooC ieect We believe in our school as an institution so organized and carried on as to give boys and girls a triple training that is necessary for a well-rounded life. We believe firmly in the coordinate training of the head, the heart, and the hand, for though each one is necessary, neither can be of great use alone. We believe that a life worth living must embody mental satisfaction, industrial pursuits, and a spiritual outlook, therefore, our various subjects and activities have been so planned and selected by us and our elders as to ultimately develop one or more sides of our educational tri- angle. We pledge that in all our endeavors we shall strive to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually strong, for we know that only such a triple development can make a real life, and in the final analysis a true American citizen. Dillard made room for us as seventh graders .. . Well... we were on our way, our course was plotted... and.. . In September 1952 we arrived at Dillard High School Grammar Airport, now flying a bit closer to our real course. Our jets started off with 220 passengers. There were so many of us that we had to be divided into various groups. We found, rather were assigned, new seats, new teachers, and for the first time pursued different courses called curriculum which we were to follow.. . Later. . . We had to tour our high school airport and get acquainted with its many departments, rooms, and new facilities. We received instructions from our Co-pilots... Through low ceiling skies our pilots, guided by wisdom and experience, piloted us on to higher grounds... Before too long. .. We next stopped on Sophomore Field, the very heart of Dillard High. Still flying higher and faster through a much colder atmosphere, our pilots finally landed us at Junior’s Airbase with some of our passengers leaving vacant seats and with a few passengers replacing them. While lounging at Junior Motel, which was at the base, we were invited to the Junior-Senior Prom. . . Invited?. . . Well, we attended the Prom. We had contestants in the Junior Oratorical Contest and other important events, all taking place during this period. Upon returning to our suite, it was announced that our next stop, and the final one, would be at the Senior Boulevard on Front Seat Lane. We found on the Boulevard as our pilot Mr. Hugh Victor Brown and our co-pilots, Mrs. L. N. Harris, Mrs. J. B. Carr, Mrs. D. D. Jones, and Mr. J. H. Wooten. . . Now what?. .. Well.. . We were forced to realize upon our arrival at Senior Boulevard that being top flight fliers involved settling down to hard, serious and more independent work. We chose Herbert Uzzell as our leader and through his leadership we were able to unveil our motto: This task we performed on Friday, February 8, 1957, at twelve noon - The class thanks its pilot and co-pilots for their many acts of kindness, patience, and everything done to make our flight enjoyable and educational in more ways than we can now visualize. FREDRICK, RETIRING PRINCIPAL OF GREENLEAF SCHOOL The year of 1957 will mark the termination of a career in the field of education for Mrs. Nannie Jones Fredrick, Principal of Greenleaf School for the past twenty- one years. Daughter of the late Jacob J. and Sara Alston Jones of Raleigh, Mrs. Fredrick has been a devoted and valuable educational leader making notable contributions to the profession and to general community advancement. Because of the efficiency exhibited in her work, and her beautiful and untiring devotion to duty, the Goldsboro Board of Education last year unanimously requested that Mrs. Fredrick retain her position of an unquestionable record and can have the satisfaction of an assurance that her duties have been performed well with dignity and capability. Mrs. N. J. Fredrick was graduated from historic Shaw University in the class of 1911, and did further study in the Laboratory School, University of Chicago. She was married to the late Robert Fredrick of Warsaw, North Carolina, on December 25, 1912. She helped her husband organize and operate the Fredrick’s Pharmacy, which business continued until the husband's death in 1934. She was elected to the principalship of East End School where she served for ten years, and then to Greenleaf School which, because of her capable administration, has become one of the best organized schools in the system boasting of a fully vital- ized, life-related program with a comprehensive and purposeful calendar of activities, and has also become the first Negro Elementary School to receive accreditation in the city under her administration. A member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, she is an outstanding influence in the instructional department and an enthusiastic field worker in the interest of un- churched youth. She is a member of the executive board of the Wayne County T. B. Association and was a former member of the Wayne County Crippled Children's League. She is also past president of the Eleventh District Parent-Teachers Association. To this educational leader who has served diligently the profession she so ably represents and a grateful public whose interest she has so nobly advanced, the Greenleaf School faculty humbly and proudly dedicates this page. - 5' % pHlIi S M iht-mz- ppm mmwtfAf-: ? •. «ih -«■ |Ms £hm % f . «ss ; n$j?, ltSKS?; P ff JJ.fjf ;.v.«.; !! —--------- . : 'f MV7 iff x V tyteetttea School s4ctcvctie Above: A sixth grade Banking Activity in Greenleaf School - Miss S.
