LEDANNUS VOLUME 22 1981 TWO ROADS DIVERGED IN A WOOD, AND I I TOOK THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED BY, AND THAT HAS MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE -ROBERT FROST LOUIS E. DIERUFF HIGH SCHOOL 2 3 nmuite: | DIERUFF | HIGH j SCHOOL HUSKY PRIDE 5 STYLES OF 81 Every year the graduating class adopts its favorite cloth- ing styles. The Class of 81 is no exception. The preppy look swept the scene this year, carrying in such favorites as plaid skirts, knee highs, alligator shirts and penny loafers. Some of those not overcome by alligators took on the Urban Cowboy look, parading in their cowboy boots and western shirts. The biggest challenge the in style dressers had to face was squeezing into their designer jeans. Jordache, Gloria Vanderbilt, Sasson and Calvin Klein appeared to be the most popular. The casual look dominated from head to toe, from cowboy hats to Dock- sides, mud mocs and jazz shoes. How long will the latest craze last? Only the Class of 82 knows! 8 Barb Folajtar anH TWb Weiss conquer the bull. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Vice-President Carole Brady, President Domenic Scarcia, Treasurer Susan Stoudt, and Secretary Michele Becker. I would like to leave the Class of 81 with a few words of wisdom. As you go through life, you must always remem- ber to put 100% into everything you do. If you are not going to put 100% into it, then don't do it. You only get out of life as much as you put into it. If you know you tried your best, that is all anybody can ask. I will always remember the times of victory and, yes, the times of defeat. But most of all I will remember tlje many life long friends, both students and teachers, that I came to know at Dieruff. These last three years have been the best years of my life. I know I will never forget them. I hope you will remember them forever. Display your HUSKY PRIDE in the outside world now that you have graduated from Dieruff and have become young adults. Always hold your head high and be proud to be a HUSKY. I want to put one last thought into your minds and hearts and that is to love one another as you love your- self. I wish you all good luck in everything you pursue in life. Domenic Scarcia Senior Class President STUDENT COUNCIL Secretary Teresa Stewart, President Sam Balga. To the Class of 1981.1 have but a few things to say. First of all, we made it! As we may read this now or in the future, I know we will always remember our years at Dieruff. We must all strive to take the name of Louis E. Dieruff with us wherever we may go. Through our years at Dieruff we have gone through times of tribulation and times of pride in the things we have accomplished, and we have also tasted the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Through all these times our HUSKY PRIDE had shown wherever we went. We look to the future with a great challenge ahead of us. We must all remember the ability God has given us to learn and we must cherish it. I know we will all remember what we have learned at Dieruff, academically and about our- selves and others. I will miss Dieruff because of how it has affected my life and I hope your feelings are the same. So in final I wish you all good luck in the future. Samuel E. The visitors spent two days touring the Allentown School District. Their trip was spon- sored by the Japan Ministry of Education. The main ob- jective was to attain information to improve Japan's style of education. The guests enjoyed visiting our planetar- ium, and eating com on the cob for the first time. One of the things that impressed the visitors was our student parking lot. We gave our guests HUSKY PRIDE” bump- er stickers, a HUSKY folder, a key chain and a picture of KISKA. In return we received chopsticks, artwork, fans, and dolls. In the picture, Domenic Scarcia and Robin Schlener are holding a scroll which was one of the gifts we received. We were also honored this year by a visit from Mayor Frank Fischl. He held a press conference with some of Mr. Bannon's students. Susse Kjaer has already graduated from her school in Denmark, and chose to attend Dieruff as a senior this year to see what the Ameri- can Education System is like. We were delighted to have her on our girl's tennis team, and hope she enjoyed her stay at Dieruff. Mayor Frank Fischl talks with Dieruff students. Denmark student Susse Kjaer. They have competed in 4 competitions, receiving excellent ratings in each one. Parades are also an important aspect of being in a band and this year Dieruff has par- ticipated in the Memorial Day, Hal- loween, and St. Patty's Day Parades. From May 22-24 the band was com- peting and sightseeing in Boston, Mass. To raise money for this trip and other expenses the band held paper drives and sold over $19,000 worth of hoagies, pizzas, pretzels, M M's, and patrons throughout the year. This person is none oth- er than our own state champion wrestler, Dennis Atiyeh. For three years, Atiyeh darkened our door- ways here at L.E.D. and captured a 78 and 12 career wrestling record. His wrestling abilities were thor- oughly exposed as he placed fourth in the heavyweight division at the state championships in 1980. Atiyeh in all his glory, captured the state title in 1981. He beat a massive Jim Dickson of Phillipsburg-Oseola. Dennis Atiyeh brought a special to the institution of Louis E. Dieruff and he will be greatly missed. There's pride in the Atiyeh name and Den- nis brought it to Dieruff high school, school. J.V. BASKETBALL TEAM GOES UNDEFEATED Something every athelete dreams of is an undefeated season. For twelve young husky atheletes, this dream became a reality. The 1980- 81 L.E. Dieruff J.V. basketball team became the first undefeated team in the schools' history. They were un- marked in twenty games. One of the keys to the Huskies' success was the sophomore sensation Marvin Jen- nings. The 6'6” Jennings shot 53% from the floor and continued to please the crowd with his patented dunks! Marvin Jennings is a name to look for in the future as well as in the present. It was indeed a dream come true for the players and of course, the loyal fans. M LIT HYMEN REACHES 1,000 PTS. The 1980-81 basketball season was a very special one for Lit Hy- men. Lit, single-handedly shot for and reached the 1,000 point plateau in this, her senior year. She was only the third to do so in L.E.D. history, and is currently the schools' all-time leading scorer. Lit’s persistent play allowed the team to finish 3rd in the district and compete in the state tournament. Her smile and well to do charm has provided the student body and the faculty with many good times. Who knows what's in store for the upcoming girls' basket- ball teams, but the talent of Lit Hy- men will probably never be forgot- ten. 1980 STATE DIVING CHAMPION DOREEN MARCKS One of the most difficult tasks for a scholastic athlete is to be the best at his or her respective sport. For most, a state championship is just a dream. Reaching the plateau of state cham- pionship stature takes a lot of prac- tice and endurance. For most, it takes three years to get to the top of their class. Doreen Marcks only needed two. In her junior year, Do- reen was the best female diver in the state of Pennsylvania. A gymnast turned diver, Doreen worked hard at being the best. Doreen Marckes, now a graduated senior, will be greatly missed in the swimming world at Dieruff High School. 65 Getting soaked at the Easton Game . . . wearing Halloween masks at the Whitehall game . .. helping the ''Queen Machine . .. spirit stick . .. the ceiling collapsing in the senior's room at camp ...
