4694 ftiuu 309 The word QUICK was branded in the minds of the Outlaws. Coach McClure stressed that quickness would be a factor in our favor. We reported in early during August. We were in excellent shape for our first Game against Glen wood. We were determined not to start this season the same as we had the one before. It was a hot muggy night, and everyone was a little nervous before the game. The nervousness disappeared, however, with the first blow. The seniors knew from experience what needed to be done and thought only of the fob at hand. Even with all our determina- tion, the half time score was 19-6, Glenwood 's favor. That's the way the score stayed. The game was tough and the loss left us won- dering what we were lacking. We came back the next week to play the Perryville Mustangs. We had a great week of practice and we thought we had a good chance to win on Friday night. We were ready to play when we took the field. Perryville mounted a scoring drive the first time they had possession of the ball. After moving back and forth down the field, we finally got a drive started and scored. Turnovers proved to be our downfall, and we couldn't keep a substantial drive going the rest of the night. The score ended up 28-6, Perry- ville's fa vor. The fifth week of the season brought us to Glen Rose. The Bea vers scored early in the first quarter. After that, we gained the momen- tum and marched do wn the field to tie up the score. The first half of the game was a tough twenty-four minutes of hard fought foot- ball. There were plenty of hard hits exchanged both ways during the course of the game. We never gained the advantage, and Glen Rose emerged victorious with a score of 26-6. It was a long bus ride home. . On Halloween night the Outlaws traveled to Foreman to take on the Gators. The week of practice had been better than usual. Nobody expected anything out of us though. Coach Simmons, however, made the statement before the game that he thought we would surprise some people. We set out to prove him right. The Outla ws stayed close until late in the third quarter. We played better than we had played in a long time, but it wasn 't enough for a victory. When the season was over, the team was left grasping for answers and wondering why the season had ended as it had. But maybe we need to remind ourselves that football is still, after all, only a game - and while it may be important at Dierks High School, what we make of ourselves and the kind of men we be- come is far more important.
