Watrel THE PRESIDENT AND THE STATE BOARD OF HIGHER EDUCATION Seventy years ago. in 1918, this university first opened its doors Thirty-three students climbed the stairs of the Elks Building ir downtown Dickinson to become the first class to enroll at thi Institution. That was a humble beginning but today the traditior lives on in you. Academic Year 1987-88 has been one of the most exciting and productive periods in the 70-year proud history of this unique institution. Progressive, innovative and expanding, Dickinsor State has become one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the United States. DSU is not yet nationally known, but ou superb faculty, which holds terminal degrees from prestigiou universities from the U.S. and abroad, has inevitably attracted c wider circle of students who spread the word about the high quality education they receive. As we have grown in reputation so too has our enrollment increased. This year we have had the highest enrollment in recent history, continuing the annuc growth we have experienced in the last decade. We enjoyed highly successful academic, cultural, and athletic programs this year. You the students, DSU's living spirit, continuec to add your enthusiasm, your energy, and your intellect to mak ing this an exciting place to teach, to learn, and to grow. DSU i: on the threshold of an even brighter, more exciting future anc the intention is to face that future with confidence and courage in the knowledge that our foundations are firm, our programs arc in place, and our course is true. When you return to DSU in the coming years, I know that you will see even further growth anc expansion. During my tenure here I have never seen DSU stand ing so tall. Albert A.
