This was on display as part of the student exhibition at Mind's Eye Gallery. Students from DSU have been exhibiting their art for 20 years. This year the number of exhibitors increased since students have been showing their art. The reason is probably because enrollment in art classes has increased. Most of the exhibitors are art majors, and have had an interest in art since they were young. We have some very talented artists right here at DSU. 39 Benni Privaisky ‘doing her thing’ in Minds Eye Gallery HOMECOMING COMMITTEE Eroni Kevin Thompson. Deanne Binsiock. LeDeanna Simik. Wayne Huck. James Dahl. The 1986-87 school year kept the Western Concept staff hopping, trying to keep up with the news and present it in an unbiased and readable fashion throughout the 15 issues that were distributed during the school year. The American Scholastic Press Association awarded the Concept first place rating in the Association's annual newspaper awards competition. The Concept received 910 out of a possible 1.000 points, which was enough to qualify for a first place in the 1001-1700 enrollment category. The judges cited the clean crisp style, range of reporting and knowledge of school-community needs as the reasons for the number one rating. They also complimented the paper staff on their hard work and understanding of the fundamentals of reporting and reproduction. Concept Editor Thom Barnhart was extremely pleased with the success of the newspaper saying. I hope that the students will take pride in this achievement and continue to show support for the Concept. Concept Advisor Gordon Weixel. was also pleased with the results of the competition. He felt that the stuff had worked hard all year long and that they deserved the recognition shown them by the ASPA competition. Some of the major issues covered by the Concept included: The DSU name changes. Homecoming. AIDS, the switch to semesters, the future of North Dakota's Higher Education, athletic drug testing, the Blue Hawk football playoff. Hilltop Holiday, state tax increases, state elections. Progressive, innovative and expanding. Dickinson State has become one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the United States. Like the purest ray serene DSU is not yet nationally-known, but our superb faculty, which holds terminal degrees from prestigious universities from the U.S. and abroad, has inevitably attracted a wider circle of students who spread the word about the high-quality education they receive. As we have grown in reputation, so too as our enrollment increased. This year we have had the highest enrollment in recent history, continuing the annual growth we have experienced in the last decade. Students and faculty alike will remember that this was the year of the name change, from DSC to SUND-Dickinson. and finally, by legislative decree to Dickinson State University on April T8,1987. Our new status as a university reflects our improved standards and signifies our closer alliance with the State University System. We enjoyed highly successful academic, cultural, and athletic programs this year. You the students. DSU’s living spirit, continued to add your enthusiasm, your energy, and your intellect to making this an exciting place to teach, to learn, and to grow. DSU is on the threshold of an even brighter, more exciting future and the intention is to face that future with confidence and courage, in the knowledge that our foundations are firm, our programs are in place, and our course is true. When you return to DSU in the coming years. I know that you will see even further growth and expansion, but you can look back with pride on the year when everything came together. This summer I complete my tenth year as president of this superb institution. During my decade of stewardship. I have never seen DSU standing so tall. Albert A. Watrel President Albert A. We will all miss your advisement. Terri Corbin-Editor and the Prairie Smoke Staff 110 111 112 113 GRADUATION 114 Outstanding Seniors: Sara Peters and Paul Debit z. 115 116 1986-87 was a good year at DSU. We went from Dickinson State College to State University of North Dakota at Dickinson to finally DSU. With the name change comes a sense of excitement and growth. The participation of Administration Faculty, and of course the students has made DSU what it is today. We saw and participated in so many great events in 1986-87. We had excellent athletes, great musicians, speakers, actors and actresses, and writers to entertain and involve us. Everyone was so full of enthusiasm and fun. New and forever friends are found in college years and it’s so very sad to see them graduate and leave us behind, but we have to keep in our minds that good friends never really go away. Every year brings in new faces that start the process all over again. I would like to give special thanks to Neil McFadgen. the past yearbook advisor and Gordon Weixal. who has taken his place. Gordon was so helpful to me in finishing up the annual. Also special thanks to Kathy Jorgenson and Lisa Kilsdonk. who worked with me hand and hand through the school year and summer. I really appreciated it very much. I hope this yearbook will keep memories of the past year in your minds and hearts and hope it's all it should be. Terri Corbin Editor 117
