The History It started as a dream and a need for southwest North Dakota. A barren butte west of Dickinson was the proposed site and in 1918 the Normal School and later Dickinson State was formed. The purpose was stated quite simply by the first presi- dent Samuel T. May. Enter to learn; depart to serve. Since that humble beginning, over 26.000 students have attended Dickinson State and have advanced into all walks of professional life. The college is currently composed of four schools, they are; Arts and Sciences; Business and Adminis- tration: Education. Health Science. Physical Educa- tion and Recreation; and Applied Science and Technology. Each school is divided into divisions and then de- partments with various majors in each. DSC is fully accredited by the North Central Asso- ciation of Colleges and Schools along with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Edu- cation and is approved by the N.D. Board of Nurs- ing. 2 The college is situated on 80 acres surrounded by the city of Dickinson with a growing population of 15.000.

The Future DSC ties in the heart of a rapidly growing south- west North Dakota. Intensified agricultural and en- ergy development is changing the age. demogra- phies. and population of the area. New and ex- panded expectations are being placed on DSC to provide agricultural specialists, business leaders. doctors, lawyers, nurses, secretaries, social work- ers and professionals who can be leaders in this changing society. DSC has committed itself to the role of molding leaders through efforts of the Older Than A verage Student, extension classes, two year curriculum, four year accreditation programs, and classes that will enable students to leave DSC and attend any professional school in the country. The deep roots of DSC in Western North Dakota provide the foundation for programs of public ser- vice that are dedicated to shaping the future and helping you become a part of it. Going through elementary education requirements involves not only practical theory but also real teaching situations.
