The History It started as a dream and a need for southwest North Dakota. A barren butte west of Dickinson was the proposed site and in 1918 the Normal School and later Dickinson State was formed. The purpose was stated quite simply by the first presi- dent Samuel T. May. Enter to learn; depart to serve. Since that humble beginning, over 26.000 students have attended Dickinson State and have advanced into all walks of professional life. The college is currently composed of four schools, they are; Arts and Sciences; Business and Adminis- tration: Education. Health Science. Physical Educa- tion and Recreation; and Applied Science and Technology. Each school is divided into divisions and then de- partments with various majors in each. DSC is fully accredited by the North Central Asso- ciation of Colleges and Schools along with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Edu- cation and is approved by the N.D. Board of Nurs- ing. 2 The college is situated on 80 acres surrounded by the city of Dickinson with a growing population of 15.000. The Future DSC ties in the heart of a rapidly growing south- west North Dakota. Intensified agricultural and en- ergy development is changing the age. demogra- phies. and population of the area. New and ex- panded expectations are being placed on DSC to provide agricultural specialists, business leaders. doctors, lawyers, nurses, secretaries, social work- ers and professionals who can be leaders in this changing society. DSC has committed itself to the role of molding leaders through efforts of the Older Than A verage Student, extension classes, two year curriculum, four year accreditation programs, and classes that will enable students to leave DSC and attend any professional school in the country. The deep roots of DSC in Western North Dakota provide the foundation for programs of public ser- vice that are dedicated to shaping the future and helping you become a part of it. Going through elementary education requirements involves not only practical theory but also real teaching situations. The on job experience makes me feel more secure about going into the teaching world. Laurel Say ter Elementary Education Senior I'm preparing for the business world. I began in a two year program and realized the importance for more education. Paul Herauf Business Junior DSC has given me a stronger sense of responsibility. The concentrate of time is spent in the classrooms, library and labs. As in the outside world, work is important and central. The use of free time can form as many experiences and relationships as the classroom. The college years offer a rare opportunity to discover our real identity and choose values that become a base for life. At DSC the individual is valued and human personalities are cultured to provide and atmosphere that is stimulating and responsive. Being a member of different organizations has given me a good look as to how things are run and the different problems people encounter. Darlene Heck Senior Campus Life: Living On Your Own 7 have received a personal satisfaction from being involved in various activities. I have enjoyed meeting and working with different kinds of people. I believe there would be happier people. believe le in the world if they would lake time to participate in the activities around them. Curt Stockert Junior Residence hall living provides students a chance to learn about their own wants and needs by living with others. Providing an environment that will help students adjust to academic life is of primary importance to our program in the residence halls. Taking time to deal with students on an individual basis. I feel, is the most re- warding aspect of my job. Bob Neal Head Resident Klinefelter My dorm is my home. People are around if you want or you can be alone. It's close to all the campus facilities. I can make any class in five minutes. Tammy Gjermundson Senior Those who choose to live in the residence halls take advantage of the good location and independence of lifestyle. Resident life centers on DeLong Hall and Woods Hall for women along with Selke Hall and Klinefelter Hall for men. A family student housing complex is available for those with special needs. All are equipped with facilities for comfortable, away from home living. Student Activities A crucial pari of the learning process is meeting people and developing friendships. My involvement in student activities has encouraged me to strive for higher objectives which will ultimately be of assistance to me in my career. Curt Franchuk Senior Student activities at DSC are as var- ied as the students themselves. The college recognizes that the exper- iences the student has within DSC contributes to the development of the individual. New Experiences Traveling abroad is one of many beyond the class- room experiences that students can participate in. Field trips, special guest speakers, festivals, seminars and workshops send students from the Student Center to San Diego and around the world in learning situa- tions that leave impressions for a lifetime. The field trips and applications of knowledge that we've learned gives a lasting source to call upon. Norma Braddock Biology Junior The quality of professionals the music department brings to cam pus each year is an added dimension to my studies. Susan Mayo Senior The placement of DSC grads into the working world has a history of success. Over 95%of all graduates that apply to the placement office are employed in less than one year. A full-time em- ployee works with students to Find permanent and part time employment for those completing their education and those seeking work to subsidize their college education. Seminars are offered, on preparing credentials into a resume for job inter- views. pre-arranged interviews with prospective employers on campus, and bulletins on employ- ment vacancies throughout the state and nation. The placement office did a great deal of work in rinding job possibilities for me. Ken Lewis ’78 nmmntij Finding Your Way At D.S.C. Career decisions take time. Students at DSC are given assistance in deciding classes. majors and scheduling problems. This one-to-one atmosphere is encouraged by the faculty to help students examine their goals and ideas. Opportunities in many different Helds of study are often discovered. Ques- tions of how do I decide my schedule?, can I change majors?, which is the best decision for me to make?, what are my options?, need answers. The deans of men and women are available for counseling situations along with a full-time career counselor and a tutor in student services. I've needed on several occasions to discuss my future plans. My advisors have taken the lime and given me the fads from which I was able to make a clear decision. DSC is much more personal than a larger school. Dennis Sulser Business Administration Senior some students have no idea what type curriculum they should be in. They are confused as to their abili- ties DSC has built up my confidence. This in turn will make me a better teacher The limes I’ve needed to talk to somebody they’ve been there. The men compete in National Athletic Intercollegiate Association Division II championships in basketball, cross-country, tennis, track, and volleyball with the As- sociation for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division III. I transferred to DSC to get more involved in volleyball, basketball and track. This school is excellent for sports. I have no regrets in coming to DSC. They are more than the faculty who teach there and even more than the students who come to learn. A college like Dickinson State takes on its own personality as the total of all these factors. It becomes a unique com munity where people are encouraged to grow, both as individuals and as part of an extended family. We are proud of this community spirit at DSC and we think you will see it reflected in the pages of the Prairie Smoke. There’s a feeling of warmth here that’s more than just western hospitality. To many it is the beginning of an entire- ly new way of life — full of adven- ture. yet tinged with an apprehen- sion of what the future will bring. To others, it is the sense of satisfaction in knowing that they have completed a goal which they set many years ago. The years of study and work have developed each student in various ways, physically: mentally: socially and emotionally. Each of these stu- dents will agree that college has as- pects that cannot be gained from any other type of experience. 102 Clockwise lop left: Mona Benlz and Neil Ableidinger square final details: DSC President presents diploma to Adel a Schwartz: Susan Mayo and Dave Schmidt after the cermony-. Annette 99 Many limes all a yearbook is to a person is a book to look through and see how often they are listed. A yearbook, in essence, is a memory of the year - what happened and some of the important events that were captured by photo s and writing. When putting together such a com- pilation of ideas, events etc., it becomes in- creasingly difficult to decide what to print and what to leave out. It is a job that requires the utmost of consideration of importance. Here then is the 1980-81 Prairie Smoke. I hope it satisfies your expectations of what a memory should be of a year. I want to thank my staff who helped collect information and photo's. I especcially want to say thank you to DAN HART, the 1981-81 Prai- rie Smoke Editor. We didn't quite make it to Jamestown.
