Text from Pages 1 - 114 of the 1980 volume:

REMEMBER 1979 As the year of 1979 closed, so closed another chapter decade of our lives. The seventies brought many changes; Gas prices steeping at Sl.lO galloni the end of the Vietnam War. the beginning and fruitless end of SALT I and II talks with Russia; a floating laboratory in space for space study; and an event which still remains in the minds of most people — Watergate. The usual partying occured as the New Year was initiated. We never realized that the old paths and old times and old memo- ries of the 1970's had now become the new paths, new times and new memories of the 1980's. So as we attempt to record moments in our lives, we forget one important detail — time never stops. Agricultural students wait patiently for their instructor to arrive for class. Jim Ley. Jr., completes an assignment for Children's Lit. class by preparing a story for community children. 2 Carol Arnold. Fr.. paints the final posters for the ASA Homecoming entrant float. Above right: DSC mas- cot watches Blue Hawk football game play. 3 Robin Anderson. Fr.. gets her practice in for the newly formed swimming team. A NEW DECA 1980. A new decade with new problems, new decisions, new policies. From the Iranian conflict to the serious problems of the world, this decade will be one of many decisions which will affect the lives of the generation from which we come. This new decade will bring many new faces to Dickinson State College. As we, the present students of DSC face into the past, along with us will fade the memories and the poli- cies that rule us now. That, in-its-self is the reasoning behind a yearbook. As a visual and written memory of the times, the decisions, the events and the discoveries which have helped shape and form our lives. It also serves as a record to the future students, of what occured during OUR year, the school year of 1979-80. 1979-80 Homecoming Chief. Tom Arnold, looks on as he leads the annual homecoming parade down main street. Dickinson. May Hall, oldest building on the DSC campus, has endured many new deca’s. 4 NEW ROADS 5 Old friends are life's biggest achievement. New companions are life’s greatest asset. Throughout the years, as memories of DSC fade, the memories of old friends from college years of 1979-80 will remain because as the years go by we begin to realize the worth and value of friends — not just the old ones, but the new companions that we have met and will meet on our journey through life. Skeleton. Paul Herauf. won first prize in the Halloween cos- tume contest sponsored by CSG. We grow inward as we absorb the knowledge that is placed before us. We also expand as we grow with new knowledge, new experiences and the new ideas that come about from within. This, as we know it. is called New Growth”. Karla Forster. Jr., checks the growth progress of her dorm plants. Bottom: Chuck Peterson gets some extra help from Dr. Wheeler. Both good and bad, these times that we share are the times that we must store in our memory. Above left: Lisa Kohler delights in being a little girl again. And the gifts of growing old are the stories to be told of the feelings more precious than gold. And friends. I will remember you think of you. pray for you and when another day is through I'll still be friends with you. What we encounter, how we deal with it will mold together to form our own personal life line. Each individual is responsible for how his line runs—for he has his life. Soon, as we venture into the open world, our lives will change. Whether it is toward the positive or negative is YOUR responsibility—no one else’s. 12 Left: Dennis Gendreau does some final work on a project. Often it is said that there is nothing to do on weekends . Weekends offer the student only as much as he wants. Participation is the key to fun at DSC. The article was written by Steve Easten. Jr., who also believes that the apathy that is demonstrat- ed by DSC students is our own fault. It's Friday. 3.00 p.m. The mass exodus begins. Hundreds of DSC students head for home. What is it that drives these suitcasers from the campus every weekend? Lack of entertain- ment? Loneliness? Lack of companionship? Dis- content? All of these factors are cited by suit- casers. And all are. to a certain extent, fallicies. The most frequent complaint on the DSC campus is that there's nothing to do here. BULL. While Dickinson isn’t the entertainment capitol of the world, there are plenty of opportunities to keep amused. The DSC campus is overflowing with extracurri- cular activities and almost every organization is open to anyone. If you're bored, try running for Student Senate, join the Spanish Club, write for the Western Concept, or fraternalize with a Greek organization. Many extracurricular’s are active on the week- ends. Music, theater, and Center Board of Gov- ernors are fine examples of weekend activities. Loneliness is another reason frequently ad- vanced by students for leaving campus on the weekends. While loneliness is certainly a legiti- mate emotion that we all have experienced, it is one which can be overcome. If you head home every weekend and spend your free time during the week holed up in your dorm room, how are you going to meet anyone? In addition, we may need the warmth and secu- rity of our families. The real world can be a very harsh experience. However, we’re going to have to face it’s realities sometime. The years we spend in college can serve as a transition from home’s warmth to the world’s cold if we let them. Many of the most relaxing and enjoyable exper- iences of college life occur on the weekend — parties, dances, quiet times. It is tragic that the suitcasers cheat themselves out of these exper- iences by leaving campus. 15 NEW HORIZONS As we continue striving for an education, we begin to realize that because each day is unique, each day has a new horizon to be lived. We must attempt to reach these horizons and when reached, realize that they become the beginning of a new horizon. So begins another chapter in life. Continue on and remember the good times of 1979 80 at Dickinson State College. Above: A rainbow seems to lead into the pot-of-gold that awaits us at DSC. Right: Sunlight falls lightly on a bay of water comparable to that of our minds. 16 GROUPS CENTER BOARD OF GOVERNOR’S I The Center Board of Governors are students who are chosen by the Stu- dent Senate to be responsible for the programs and dances that are held throughout the year. The Student Senate is the governing body which regulates and distributes the money for various organizations. They are also reponsible for elections of CBG and Student Senate offices. They are responsible for many duties among which are acquir- ing new books, updating materials, or- dering special books, sorting, filing, and renewing library material. The stereotyped female librarian of forty with thick glasses on a chain and a nasal tone to her voice are only one of the memories at DSC. Librarians here at Dickinson are very pleasant, understanding, and informative. There should never be any skepticism as to the reliability of them. ND 103 GRADUATION-1980 As with any graduation, whether it is high school, college or graduate school, graduation is a time of sus- pense. self-fulfillment and self-satis- faction-knowing that it is up to you to make your decisions—decisions that will shape, form and directly affect your future. As you sit with your black garments on which seem so foreign to you. you begin to wonder if you have chosen the right field or if the past four years have been a waste of both time and money. But then you begin to remember all the good times that you have had. all the things that you have learned and all of the great friends you have shared so many memories with. Finally, you believe that it was well worth the time and the trouble. Happy and sad are the feelings that are a part of you. Happiness that you have reached a goal—your goal and yet sad that now you’ll be leaving your friends and memories behind only for some new freshmen to pick them up and begin again. Paula 92 Zuern, Annette 92 Many times, a yearbook is taken for granted and criticized to an extent of absurdity. Until you work, worry and sweat about how you are going to finish it you never realize how much there is to putting one together. I have learned that it is a real job and challenge to work on it and to put the finishing touches on the final page. It is a sense of accomplish- ment. I would like to thank all of the people who have helped me with this book: Margo Hassebrock, Dan Deichert. Carol Arnold. Duane Fried, Delores Kadrmas and espe- cially to Tim Cook whose faith in my abili- ties made the work seem easier and more conquerable. Thank you all.
