Track and field began in the early 30's, and by 1937 the team had improved enough to take a second place in the conference. They won the conference crown in 1951 and again in 1960, and held the title for the next seven years. Wrestling did not begin at Dickinson State until 1959. It immediately was a popular sport at DSC. Dur- ing the 1963 season, the team held a record of 37 consecutive wins in dual competition. This was a national record. In 1964 Dean Bachmeier brought great honor to the DSC wrestling program by winning the national title at 137 pounds. Baseballs best season at DSC was in 1962 when Gary Melling and Jim Silbernagel were pitching. Above: Al Wenko and other Vets proudly flew their flag and banner at the Homecoming game. Dormitory rooms can be- come more than just four walls staring at you with just a little bit of effort. There are a few cases wall- to-wall carpeting has trans- formed a room into a near palace in comparison to its original slate. A few things can usually be confiscated from home, and decorating articles such as posters can be bought at a small expense at any dime store or at the college bookstore. Other articles such as pillows, radios and stuffed animals help keep you company on a lonely night before exams. These examples are from: Above, Selke, Right, DeLong, and Below, Woods. Basketball was the first organized sport at DSC. There were both men's and women's teams. One of the members of the first team was Joe Brodie, uncle to the famous Ram's quarterback. The teams began during the second year of the school. Clyde O. Braden introduced football to the school in 1924. That year there were no actual games, just scrimmages against Dickinson High School. The team came out with a 5-1 record in 1933 and placed second in the conference, their best effort in their nine years of existence. Three of the stars of DSC football are now members of the faculty. Howard Kitchen was three times named to the all-conference team; Al Tamayo was selected to the all conference team, and in 1949 was the second in scoring of all members in the nation that belonged to the NAIA. Roger Huffman was an all conference cen- ter. Ted Uecker, now known to many as the littlest ref of college basketball, held many of the school records from 1955-1967. Under the direction of coach LaVern Jessen the basketball team had an impressive record. In five years he brought the team four conference championships and three District 12 NAIA cham- pionships. Top Left: These plants silhouetted against the library window appear to be of an illegal sort, but upon inspection fail to be. Left: Working on the power plant smokestack can be dizzy business, but repairs must be made from time to time. Above: Two students look up information in the reference section of the library. The pottery in the foreground was part of a special exhibit. Above Top: Heading for the library is something we must often do. Here a shot taken from upstairs May Hall shows a student making that trip. Introduction 15 The sports such as golf and tennis were hindered by the short playing season. In 1952-1956 the team won five consecutive conference titles. Other sports that enjoyed a short life at DSC were boxing and tumbling. In 1967, tumbling team member Mike Ryan was tenth in the national finals. Jeff Auch was a standout who nar- rowly missed qualifying for the finals.
