Curt Schaff and friend take time out to tell a few jokes at a Halloween party. The members of the Messiah chorus were from Dickinson State, Dickinson, and the surrounding area. The chorus was directed by Dr. Elwood H. Brown. Photographer Tim Erhardt snapped this one on a dare. Good Work Tim! The buildings on the campus have been given the names of faculty members who gave much of them- selves in many long years of service in this institution. Charles Scott who came in 1922 to teach Education and in 1939 became president, a position which he has held the longest of anyone in the college's history. In 1926 Miss Matilda Stoxen became the head librarian, a post she kept until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of the first graduating class. Harold E. Murphy joined the faculty in 1927. He remained two years, and later returned in 1936 and remained until his retirement in 1967. Mr. Murphy was a science in- structor. Arthur C. Selke also came in 1927 and remained until 1960. Samuel T. May had an educational philosophy which he expressed in the first edition of the Prairie Smoke which was published in 1923. It was in the second paragraph of his message to the Class of 1923. There are two really great things in this world- love and service. If you seek happiness, you will attain it through love and service. If your heart is full of love and your hand is ready for service you have solved the greatest problem of life. Love and service are the fundamental things in our Christian religion and are the essential elements of greatness. They are the things that make the mother great. They make the teacher great. They will make everyone great. Mr. May also had an unofficial slogan for the school: enter to learn-depart to serve. The first building on the Dickinson State Campus was Stickney Hall, built in 1922 and now used for faculty offices. It was named after Dr. Victor Hugo Stickney, who's daughter Dorothy became a famous Broadway actress who starred in the production Life With Father which ran for eight years and set an all time performance record. Maude Klinefelter came to DSC in August 1918 and remained a powerful figure for over 36 years in the capacity as business manager. She was instrumental in creating the Alumni Association, whom she left half of her $50,000 estate and which is now used for scholarships. It was at the 1953 Homecoming that what had formerly been known as South Hall would be known as Maude Klinefelter Hall. C.E. Scott was president of the College for 20 years, during a time when men were going off to war. He was loyal to the col- lege, and was to have ridden in the 50th year Homecoming parade, but passed away the evening before. Scott Gym was completed in 1953. Dr. O.A. DeLong succeeded Scott as president. He had formerly been the president at Mayville State. Pulver Hall was opened in the fall of 1967 and was named for LeRoy G. Pulver who was hired to teach only the summer session, but remained for over 32 years. 10 Introduction
