Text from Pages 1 - 130 of the 1976 volume:

With this 1976 issue, the editor and staff of the PRAIRIE SMOKE, would like to pres| it a little of the history of DSC. It is felt that our nation's 200th birthday has been greatly commercialized, and we have decided against promoting that commercialism further. We would like to honor the nation briefly in some design, and by telling the story of DSC which is a part of the country, and a part which is relevant to the staff and students here at DSC. The alumni and other members of the cony, munity and the surrounding area are concerned ah 7 ’inTe rested in the status of the institution today and in the future. It is hoped that the students of DSC will accept this approach, for it is their book. We would like to extend our many thanks to Dr. Osbourne T. Belsheim for his permission to take excerpts form his book The Story of Dickinson State , which was published in 1968. THE PRAIRIE SMOKE STAFF Introduction TABLE OF CONTENTS fntroduction Faculty and Administration Organizations and Activities Greeks Underclassmen -%5enio|s Index • Introduction 3 Although hopes for a Normal School at Dickinson began before the turn of the century, it was two decades later before a Constitutional Amendment of the State of North Dakota was adopted, and the Dick- inson Normal School was born. There was a definite need for this school, for 25% of the teachers west of the Missouri were not even qualified to hold their jobs. Less than 14% of the teachers in 1912 had any education beyond high school. It is not definitely known who proposed the idea of the Normal School at Dickinson, but there were three men who were believed to have pushed the issue. Peter S. Berg, former Dickinson school super- intendent, Morton L. McBride, a North Dakota Sena- tor, who proposed the Constitutional Amendment, and fought the floor for its passage, and Judge Fred Maser, who was also one of the primary movers for the Amendments passage. These men were interested in bringing higher education to the students of south- western North Dakota, and gave little thought to the economic benefits of the school. It was during the 13th legislative Assembly in 1913 that Senator McBride introduced the resolution. The support was great from House members who came from the West River countries. After securing enough votes for the resolutions adoption, it was signed into law on February 15,1915 by Govenor L.B. Hanna. After much publicity by the members of the Com- mercial Club of Dickinson, and others, it came to a vote of the people in November 1916. It was passed into law by a 16,000 vote majority. Education instructor Tom Jensen assists a new freshman with his schedule during fall quarter registration. O.T. Belsheim performs a solo at the annual Messiah production. Introduction Rodeoing requires a lot of practice just as other sports. Here team members get in some bull before fall competition. Penny lohnson shows excellent form as she tips the ball over the net in girls volleyball competition. The 8lue Hawk, now in its second year as the DSC mascot stands watch over Whitney Stadium to ward off dangerous opponents. The North Dakota Board of Regents, equal to today's State Board of Higher Education, was given the respon- sibility for working out the details for the school to be- come a reality. At the March meeting of the Board in 1917, a visit to Dickinson was made to inspect the various building sites for the building of the campus. It was rec- ommended by the people of Dickinson that the Board rent quarters in the Elksbuilding untill building funds could be secured. The summer of 1918 brought about a decision to hold a summer session which would be held for five, six day weeks, starting on June 24. The session was held in the old Dickinson High, and was attended by 104 students. There were no fees charged, so the students' only ex- pense was board and room. The session was organized and directed by Peter S. Berg. Introduction 5 Steve Meurer, sometimes known as Kentucky shoots over Bob Ness in a special JV-Alumni game early in the season. Senior Mary Lou Sadowsky looks somewhat bored with everything as she sits in the union. Below: F riends are a great cure for bordom as Gary Arnold appears on the scene. The first president of Dickinson Normal School was a position that was sought by eleven men from eight states. It was a unanimous selection of the Board of Regents to grant the position to Samuel T. May, superintendent of schools at Madison, South Dakota. His salary was set at $3,000 annually. Mr. May was a big man with a big voice who com- manded respect and would not ask more of anyone than he would expect of himself. May opened the school the fall of 1918, with classes beginning October 1. There was a faculty of five, who recieved salaries between $1,200 and $1,800, depending on their educational accom- plishments. There was no tuition, only a $5 registra- tion fee. 42 students attended. 6 Introduction It was common practice in pioneer institutions to accept students who had not yet completed high school and to teach them at whatever level they had attained. This was evident by the curricula divisions. The Prelim- inary Normal Course , was a one-year course designed for the older person who had not completed the eighth grade and should receive a rural teach- ing certificate upon completion of the course. There was two Advanced Normal Courses ; and an Irregular Course designed for those who were not pursuing a teaching certificate, but wished to further their general education. In December of 1918, President May made arrangements for adult educa- tion classes which were sponsored by the United States government and would provide the education required for Americanization and citizenship. Lavern Urlacher, New England, gets in a little studying in solitude on second floor May Hall. Jim Cermann and Tim Erhardt go over a story being prepared for publication in the Western Concept. Emmet Etzold and Joe Ibach watch a play while a very cool Blue Hawk looks on. Introduction 7 Samuel T. May had an educational philosophy which he expressed in the first edition of the Prairie Smoke which was published in 1923. It was in the second paragraph of his message to the Class of 1923. There are two really great things in this world- love and service. If you seek happiness, you will attain it through love and service. If your heart is full of love and your hand is ready for service you have solved the greatest problem of life. Love and service are the fundamental things in our Christian religion and are the essential elements of greatness. They are the things that make the mother great. They make the teacher great. They will make everyone great. Mr. May also had an unofficial slogan for the school: enter to learn-depart to serve. The first building on the Dickinson State Campus was Stickney Hall, built in 1922 and now used for faculty offices. It was named after Dr. Victor Hugo Stickney, who's daughter Dorothy became a famous Broadway actress who starred in the production Life With Father which ran for eight years and set an all time performance record. May Hall was completed and moved into on March 29, 1924 and classes opened there on Monday March 31. Upper Left: TKE fraternity members rehearse for Hilltop Holiday. They are. Introduction IA • Curt Schaff and friend take time out to tell a few jokes at a Halloween party. The members of the Messiah chorus were from Dickinson State, Dickinson, and the surrounding area. The chorus was directed by Dr. Elwood H. Brown. Photographer Tim Erhardt snapped this one on a dare. Good Work Tim! The buildings on the campus have been given the names of faculty members who gave much of them- selves in many long years of service in this institution. Charles Scott who came in 1922 to teach Education and in 1939 became president, a position which he has held the longest of anyone in the college's history. In 1926 Miss Matilda Stoxen became the head librarian, a post she kept until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of the first graduating class. Harold E. Murphy joined the faculty in 1927. He remained two years, and later returned in 1936 and remained until his retirement in 1967. Mr. Murphy was a science in- structor. Arthur C. Selke also came in 1927 and remained until 1960. He was an instructor of geography and geol- ogy. Introduction 9 Below: Professor Peabody explains the formula needed to win the Homecoming game as people pass the Computing Services office. Right: Photographer Tim Erhardt caught this view of the Burlington Northern Depot in the rear-view mirror of his car. Below Right: Students Jim Elmquist and Lynn Geiger go about their work midst a ceramic display in Stoxen Library. Maude Klinefelter came to DSC in August 1918 and remained a powerful figure for over 36 years in the capacity as business manager. She was instrumental in creating the Alumni Association, whom she left half of her $50,000 estate and which is now used for scholarships. It was at the 1953 Homecoming that what had formerly been known as South Hall would be known as Maude Klinefelter Hall. C.E. Scott was president of the College for 20 years, during a time when men were going off to war. He was loyal to the col- lege, and was to have ridden in the 50th year Homecoming parade, but passed away the evening before. Scott Gym was completed in 1953. Dr. O.A. DeLong succeeded Scott as president. He had formerly been the president at Mayville State. Pulver Hall was opened in the fall of 1967 and was named for LeRoy G. Pulver who was hired to teach only the summer session, but remained for over 32 years. 10 Introduction Upper Left: Paper people need to be appreciated too as indicated here on a filing cabinet in the Pulver Hall journalism complex. Above: Freshman |an Prchal and other freshman wait in a never ending line to recieve materials for registration during fall quarter orientation. Pringle consumption must be on the increase as this stack of cans in De Long Hall indicates. The other structures on the campus were similarly named for long-time faculty members. The Woods Hall was named for Leila G. Woods who was the Dean of Women from 1938-1964. Harry Weinbergen whom the newest building on the campus is named for, came to DSC in 1927 and remained here until his retirement in 1966. He coached all sports and also taught science and physical education. His wife Eve taught English, was acting Dean of Women and Assistant and Head Librarian. Introduction 11 Right: Commander Lloyd M. Bucher of the USS. Pueblo addressed an audience of 200 in the May Hall Auditorium on September 11. He spoke on What's Right With America? Below: A Vet points to his Homecoming button which bears the slogan Co Blue Hawks Bottom: Participants in the religious leaders conference share a few words and talk over the highlights of the session. Student art and exhibits by guest artists are often displayed in Stoken Library's Roosevelt Room. This work appeared early during the winter quarter. 2 Introduction Dormitory rooms can be- come more than just four walls staring at you with just a little bit of effort. There are a few cases wall- to-wall carpeting has trans- formed a room into a near palace in comparison to its original slate. A few things can usually be confiscated from home, and decorating articles such as posters can be bought at a small expense at any dime store or at the college bookstore. Other articles such as pillows, radios and stuffed animals help keep you company on a lonely night before exams. These examples are from: Above, Selke, Right, DeLong, and Below, Woods. Basketball was the first organized sport at DSC. There were both men's and women's teams. One of the members of the first team was Joe Brodie, uncle to the famous Ram's quarterback. The teams began during the second year of the school. Clyde O. Braden introduced football to the school in 1924. That year there were no actual games, just scrimmages against Dickinson High School. The team came out with a 5-1 record in 1933 and placed second in the conference, their best effort in their nine years of existence. Three of the stars of DSC football are now members of the faculty. Howard Kitchen was three times named to the all-conference team; Al Tamayo was selected to the all conference team, and in 1949 was the second in scoring of all members in the nation that belonged to the NAIA. Roger Huffman was an all conference cen- ter. Ted Uecker, now known to many as the littlest ref of college basketball, held many of the school records from 1955-1967. Under the direction of coach LaVern Jessen the basketball team had an impressive record. In five years he brought the team four conference championships and three District 12 NAIA cham- pionships. Introduction 13 Below: Members of the Blue Hawks football squad hoped that a little hair on their faces might bring them a little luck, and it did, right up until the end when they were defeated by Jamestown in the last game of the season. Above: Athletic director Roger Huffman was assisted by Physical education faculty members in a little number at the Homecoming Pep Rally held in Scott Gym. Track and field began in the early 30's, and by 1937 the team had improved enough to take a second place in the conference. They won the conference crown in 1951 and again in 1960, and held the title for the next seven years. Wrestling did not begin at Dickinson State until 1959. It immediately was a popular sport at DSC. Dur- ing the 1963 season, the team held a record of 37 consecutive wins in dual competition. This was a national record. In 1964 Dean Bachmeier brought great honor to the DSC wrestling program by winning the national title at 137 pounds. Baseballs best season at DSC was in 1962 when Gary Melling and Jim Silbernagel were pitching. Above: Al Wenko and other Vets proudly flew their flag and banner at the Homecoming game. The pottery in the foreground was part of a special exhibit. Above Top: Heading for the library is something we must often do. Here a shot taken from upstairs May Hall shows a student making that trip. Introduction 15 The sports such as golf and tennis were hindered by the short playing season. In 1952-1956 the team won five consecutive conference titles. Other sports that enjoyed a short life at DSC were boxing and tumbling. In 1967, tumbling team member Mike Ryan was tenth in the national finals. Jeff Auch was a standout who nar- rowly missed qualifying for the finals. The bump a dance that gained popularity throughout the year, was performed by members of Family during their Homecoming weekend performance. Here they try to get a young innocent into the action. 1975-1976 could be called the year of the CB, citizen's band radio. Throughout the country, a man named C.W. McCall acquainted the public with its codes and its uses. 16 Introduction President Gillund Dickinson Stale College Students - Past, Present and Future. The 1976 yearbook takes a special significance during this Bi- centennial year. An account of the history of the college is being presented in this year's Prairie Smoke. Dickinson State College is the youngest of the four-year state colleges, but its inception, ma- turity, and development are of great importance. Dickinson State College is great because its students, faculty, staff and alumni have made it such. The continual contact with former students reminds one of why the college enjoys success. The former students throughout the years have distinguished them- selves in education, business and countless other fields of endeavor. All of them would attribute, at least part, of their success to the experiences gained at Dickinson State College. A distinguishing feature of Dickinson State College is its size. This affords those associated with the college the opportunity to know and work closely with each other in the classroom setting and the many other activities available at the college. I wish to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to those involved in student publications, and in this instance, the Prairie Smoke staff for helping us tell the story of Dickinson State College.
