' 'WWim mmn PRAIRIE SMOKE DICKINSON STATE COLLEGE DICKINSON, NORTH DAKOTA Dedication DR. KENTON VICKERY COUNTRY GRAVEYARD BLUES The evenin bell is ringin in the church, A line of cows comes mooin from the posture, A farm-hand, all tired out, goes walkin home. An leaves me standin here alone an thinkin. The twilight fades; the world soon disappears; And everything is quiet as the grave. Except ye hears a beetle circle by Or someplace ya kin hear a sheepbell ring. . . . They's lotsa big shots livin in th world— All high an mighty, thinks they's goin places. An turns their noses up at guys like these. But what the deuce? They got no room to grin. They brags about their grandads and their family, What they says goes, they brags; they wears swell clothes; Their dames is fashion-plates, an mighty grand; They'll get what these folks got, and nothing more. Swell tombstones and brass plates stuck up in church Don't do no good; ya won't be there ta hear The preacher lyin bout how good ya was. An you won't hear the organ an the choir. Ya can't bring people back from death ta life With fancy urns and lifelike statue heads; Funeral honors falls flat for the dead An soft-soap don't smooth nothin for a corpse. . . . His head lies here upon the ground As if it were upon his mother's lap; The world outside this town knew nothing of him, He had no education, none at all. And when we saw him he was always sad. But he was good to everyone, and kind; And he was honest; God rewarded him. He cried when he saw other people suffer. He was too poor to help in other ways; Yet God made everyone he knew his friend. That was good enough for him; his needs were small. Why should we give him any other praise. Nor shall we speak against him, though, of course He had his faults, just like the rest of us, For now he is at peace; he is with God. —By Dr. Kenton Vickery 1964 Prairie Smoke Staff Adviser Mrs. Carol Oukrop We wish to thank Osborn Studio and Yearbook House Publishers for all the help they have given to the staff to make the publication of this book possible. PRAIRIE SMOKE MESSAGE The issues of Prairie Smoke provide posterity with the most complete record of events in the history of Dickinson State College. Prairie Smoke is more than a recitation of events of a given year — the personalities and the spirit of the year are caught up in the pictures of people and events and preserved as they were at the time history was made. The year 1963-64 was no ordinary year at Dickinson. New positions added to the instructional staff, two new build- ings on the campus, the continued growth of the student body, the vitality of the students as expressed in the activity programs of the college, all indicate that forces of growth and progress have been at work during the year at Dickinson State and the people whose pictures appear in this annual have all been a part of this significant year. —O. Student Council At DSC, the Student Council provides the student body with an opportunity to express opinion. In its weekly meetings the Student Council becomes a sounding board for student opinion with regard to school policies. An effort to create a more complete college life has led to close cooperation with both faculty and administration. Under the competent leadership of President Fred Koesel, the Student Coun- cil has done much to achieve this goal. Typical projects in the past year included sponsoring social events, cultural programs, and progressive activities. 36 The Student Union Board of Governors sets up policies, rules, and regulations concerning the uses of the Student Union. It is the duty of the Student Union manager to carry out such recommenda- tions. Members ore selected through application to and appointment by the former Board. The Music Educators National Conference is composed of all students with majors or minors in music. Its main purpose is to help students become familiar with the activities and workings of the national professional organization. Each year the highlight of the MENC activities is the production of Hilltop Holiday ' a student conducted musical variety show. This year Hilltop Holiday went All-American, under the direction of Elmer Schock. Hilltop Holiday's All-American theme was centered around these groups: hand- picked Hilltop Stage Band which performed a variety of numbers from Night in Tunisia to The Warsaw Concerto ; small groups, like the male quartet which added a masculine influence; a faculty quartet which did a humorous take-off on an opera, and an equally versatile Hilltop Chorus which sang Everything's Coming Up Roses, Moon River, and America the Beautiful. An added attraction at Hilltop Holiday was Miss North Dakota, Joann Syvrud, who sang several folk songs. A salute to the American family concluded the production. MENC officers include: President, Dave Teidman; Secretary, Chuck Hendrick- son; Treasurer, Mike Morey. 62 STUDENT CHAIRMAN ELMER SCHOCK Hilltop Highlights Hilltop Chorus Hilltop Quartet Hilltop’s All-American Family Part of the Hilltop Stage Band Senior division: Bob Wood Novice division: Roger Herouf and Bob Adams Novice division: Bob Lennick and Russ Miller Debate Squad newest recruit? 64 For the first time in nearly 30 years Dickin- son is being represented by a debate squad. Blithe Spirit Deemed Success Noel Coward’s Pultizer Prize winning play Blithe Spirit” was staged at DSC April 21, 22 and 23. Blithe Spirit” Kathy Fritsch, as Madame Arcati, has the power to talk to those in the other world, and Charles Condomine, played by Maurice Erickson is bewildered by her witchcraft. Maurice Erickson is disturbed by the return of his first wife Elvira, played by Judy Bovee. 162 Mr. Roberts” Payday brings poker 163 Cinderella (Edna Melvin), with her fairy godmother (Sharon Schopp), dis- cusses the ball and her wish to attend it. The wonderful world of fairyland came to the DSC campus with the pres- entation of Cinderella, a stoge play adapted from the legendary fairy tale of a young lady who married Prince Charming. Cinderella, as the legend would have it, had a very cruel step-mother and two horrible step-sisters who wouldn't let the beautiful young lady have a moment of peace. Cinderella was re- duced to the status of cinder-wench and maid in the household and had secret dreams of a fairy godmother who would help her escape from the harsh rule of her step-mother and sisters. The play was presented primarily for grade school children and used a cast of DSC students and was directed by Marvin Gardner, a student of dramatics in the DSC speech department. Cinderella Stage Productions The Other Side In addition to major theatre productions, the DSC stage played host to many one-act plays— most of them student-directed. Other one-act ploys produced include: Sorry, Wrong Number, The Still Alarm, Aria De Capo, and Wait- ing for Godot , a two-act play which was directed by Dr. A. A. Norton. For Heaven's Sake A religious musical drama was presented by DSC students during religious emphasis week. Student Council Elections One of the climaxes of the Spring Quarter is the election of the student council for the next year. A full slate of candidates vied for the offices of president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, sociol commissioner, publications com- missioner, sports commissioner and music com- missioner. Candidates for office spent before the entire student body. Tu o organized parties ran full slates for the coveted offices and one person ran independently for the office of I I • • President. Convocations Following the political footsteps of his famous brother, the late President John F. Kennedy, Senator Ted Kennedy of Massa- chusetts spent a hectic two hours speaking, visiting, and dining in Dickinson. During a very short convocation in May Hall, at which time he was accompanied by Governor Guy and Senator Quentin Burdick, he spoke to the student body about the advantages of federal aid, as well as the gratitude of the entire Kennedy family for the generosity and kindness shown since his brother's assassination. He is shown above as he arrived at the airport. At left, he is walking with President DeLong into May Hall. Election Time Pictured above is Myron Buriat) while delivering his campaign speech before the student body during the elections for Student Council offices. The convocation is an annual event to acquaint the students with the candidates and their platforms. Motion picture and TV star, Hans Conried appeared in May Hall giving Shakespearian readings and dramatizations April 10 of this year. 167 School Parties Le Beatnik Ball Beatnik twisters dressed appropiately, do the Beatnik Twist” oblivious of the camera or any other spectators. Marv Gardner does an original reading at the Beatnik Ball. Sponsored by the French Club, the party was one of the more successful throughout the year. Part of its success was undoubtedly due to the mood- setting atmosphere created by the dark lights, cushions and boxes on the floor, candlelight, and time out for various readings such as the one done by Gardner. Sadie Hawkins Dance One's black aiui one’s white—his socks, that is. Crazy combinations and corny costumes helped to make the Sadie Hawkins dance fun for everyone attending. It was sponsored by the Freshman Class, and the music was provided by The Frontiersmen, a college group. Most of the school parties t! roughout the year are spon- sored by a school organization. The themes vary, but the purpose remains the same—to entertain the students. 168 Carol Pfau ....................... soprano Beverly Agnew .............. _ contralto Leslie Weiser ________________________tenor Dr. Bruce Loganbill ............. baritone Dr. A. The chorus of 120 was composed of the DSC choral groups and interested community singers. Under the direction of Dr. A. Malcolm Brown, the choir was accompanied by Mrs. Della Heid at the piano, and David Tiedman at the organ. 171 Dr. Jack Early, President, Dakota Wesleyan University, gives the commencement address during the graduation ceremonies May 29, 1964.
