The spacious campus ofthe North Dakota State Teach- ers College at Dickinson is providing needed room for development. The existing buildings are comparatively new and the campus plan and location are such that further development can make it the most beautiful campus in the northwest. The location of the college makes it natural for it to become an area college serv- ing the higher education needs of Western North Dakota. A president's home is being completed on the north edge of the campus. By l96l the college hopes to have the new library ready for service and faculty offices. This structure is to be located between the east wing of May Hall and the new men's residence hall. Other plans include housing for married stu- dents, a new women's dormitory, a student union, a science unit, and an addition to Scott Gymnasium. These building goals are only part of the college's dynamic plans for the future. . wifi rl Ewfifliimr. . .1s::4Yiw.w,2g'M2'rf wx . N sii 3 W 'TW' ' w T Q 1 54 U :' la , .2 . . 2 15. k Ls- A H . Affhuf C .SM gbecbcafion We respectfully dedicate the l96O edition of the Prairie Smoke to Dr. Arthur C. Selke who has worked to further the interests of the college and the students attending it. His remembering names and faces ot former students is one of his outstanding characteristics. Dr. Arthur C. Selke, who is a member of a family that has done much to meet the educational needs ot the Midwest area, has been at Dickinson State Teachers College for thirty-three years. He came to the Dickinson college from the Black Hills Teachers College at Spearfish, South Dakota in l927. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Minnesota and his Ph.D. from the University of North Dakota. He has done additional graduate study at the University of Chicago, the University of Heidelberg, and the School of Economics, Mannheim, Germany. Dr. Selke is chairman of the Social Science Division and was a member of the Administrative Council at the college for many years. During this past year he has served on the Curriculum Council. He has been active in many of the campus organizations and college committees. The college faculty and the State Board of Higher Education recommended that the new men's residence hall be named Selke Hall. Dr. Selke will be retiring this year after many years in teaching. 2 Z 5 QQ W... 1,1 Mrs. Ramona Brown secretary Pres O A D L , , . . . e ong, and Business Manager P. O. Cllfdgezf jak COIQLPQHCB eC0l'l6! pfalfe Head Coach Bob Tracy The l959 Savage team was said to be just as strong, or stronger, than the l958 team. Had it not been for an upset by Wahpeton and a complete reversal by May- ville, the Savages would have ended in the top notch. The Wahpeton-Savage game was the first con- ference home game. Previously, the Savages had played at Jamestown, winning 7-6. They also won a non-conference home game against the Rocky Moun- tain Bears, ln the Savages' next-to-the-last game of the sea- son, they lost to Mayville State Teachers College by a score of 30-19. All of the Savages' points were scored during the first half of the game, while Mayville scored its points in the third quarter. A freak turnabout and technical difficulties beyond the control of the Savages' ball club members prevented them from winning that game, and from eventually winning the state championship. The Savages were defeated only once previously during the season. This was in a game with the Wahpe- ton Wildcats, l2-6. As the season closed, Mayville stood in first place, Dickinson second, Valley City third, Wahpeton fourth, Minot fifth, Jamestown sixth, and Ellendale seventh. After a season of hard-fought games, the 1959 Savages deserve a well-earned Congratulations! 55 Tom Gunderson Linc Reinhiller At the end of the l959 football season, Tom Gunderson and Bob Lasater were elected by their teammates as co-captains. This was the second year Bob Lasater was elected as a co-captain. Both are seniors. Buzz Osborne was the manoger ofthe '59 edition ofthe Savages. He accompanied the team on all their trips, faithfully attended every practice session, and proved to be a handy person to have around. Others played were with Jamestown there, Wahpeton here, Minot here for Homecoming, Ellendale, there, Mayville there, and Valley City here. Clayton Ketterling was appointed coach of the first wrestling team. Thirty-five men came out for the team. Of these, Coach Ketterling gave letters to those participating in three intercollegiate wrestling matches. ln order to wrestle in a match between schools, each wrestler challenged the wrestler that had last represented DSTC and if he wan, would then wrestle in his place. In this way, only the best wrestler in each weight class came out on top. According to Coach Ketterling, the Savages had a fairly good year, considering that only two men, John Oxton and Leroy Boespflug, were experienced wrestlers. ln the years to come, and as the grapplers gain in ex- perience, DSTC should have one of the top wrestling teams in the conference. The Savages participated in a total of twelve meets, along with the district and state meets. Buzz Osborne was manager of the wrestling team. At the beginning of the season, the team voted on and chose two co-captains. Elected were Kenny Miller and Leroy Boespflug. 58 Coach Ketterling and Captains Kenny Miller and Leroy Boespflug THE i960 SAVAGE BASKETBALL TEAM-TOP ROW: Roger Erick- Haug. Several times during the season the team was at the top of the scale in the NDIAC conference. At the end of the season's play, Valley City took its fourth consecutive NDIAC championship, Minot was in second place, Jamestown third and Dickin- son fourth. The last game of the season was against Jamestown at Scott gym. This game determined the third place winner. Jamestown took it, breaking an eleven-year period during which the Savages had not been beaten by Jamestown on the Dickinson court. 60 At the end of conference playing, Dickinson placed two of its players in the top ten scoring positions. Marv Knoll rated third and Bob Leinius placed ninth. Knoll and Don Prouty served as co-captains during the season. This year, Coach Harry Wienbergen served his thirty-second consecutive year at Dickinson as Athletic Director. He has coached a total of nine championship teams. He came to Dickinson in 1927 from Mount Horeb High School in Wisconsin. Previous to that, he coached basketball at Madison College while attending the University of Wisconsin.
