This Annual has been edited by the Prairie Smoke Staff of North Dakota State Teachers College at Dickinson. CUixXX 1 ifr t flUffCs TABLE of CONTENTS i N Mrs. A. C. (Esther) Selke The students of DSTC wish to extend their deepest sympathy to Dr. A. C. Selke on the loss of his beloved wife and daughter. Mrs. Selke worked for many years in the field of education as a teacher, and as a principal in schools in Washington, in Minnesota, and in North Dakota, and par- ticipated in civic activities and organizations throughout her lifetime. She held executive offices in the National League of American Pen Women, the American Associa- tion of University Women, and the Stark County Women’s Republican Club. Dr. Selke’s daughter, Carla, was a graduate of Dick- inson Central High School. She attended one summer session at DSTC and three years at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She would have been grad- uated in June, 1959. Dr. Selke has been an instructor at DSTC for more than 30 years. He is chairman of the Division of Social Science. 3 Carla Selke DEDICATION As an expression of gratitude for his guidance and friendship to DSTC students during the past twenty years, we dedicate this 1959 edition of the Prairie Smoke to President Charles E. Scott. Charles E. Scott is a native of Missouri and first came to North Dakota to head the Department of Educa- tion at the Dickinson Normal School in 1922. In 1927 he went to Minot State Teachers College as director of training, and in 1939 became acting president at Minot for a year. He was appointed president of the college at Dickinson on August 1, 1939. Since his appointment, President Scott has worked constantly for the advance- ment and improvement of DSTC. 4 PRESIDENT CHARLES E. SCOTT FACULTY LEILA G. WOODS Dean of Women CLINTON SHEFFIELD Art L. Tracy and the DSTC Savages brought home half of the NDIAC Football crown this year. The Savages shared the championship with Valley City. The fighting Savages started their championship run September 18th and did not lose or tie a game until October 31st. The season’s record was six wins against one loss. Even without their regular coach, the Savages didn’t stop. Coach Tracy was in the hospital when the team played the Homecoming game. The men, however, crushed Mayville 20—6 “for Coach Tracy.” A team with the spirit and the en- thusiasm of the 1958 football squad deserved every inch of the glory they re- ceived. Janis Lamsters of Dickinson set a mark of 21.1 in the 220 yard dash. He broke the record set by Hoy Halen of Jamestown in 1939. Lamsters also tied for second high in points with a total of ten points. The Savages attended six meets: The West Hiver Relays at Rapid City, South Dakota; the Jamestown Relays; the Dickinson T.C. Invitational; the State College Meet; and the conference track meet. They won DSTC Invitational. 59 STUDENT COUNCIL Standing: Bill Schwab, Eileen Kuehn, Bob Armstrong, Harlan Wash, Bob Messer, Pete Larson, Ray Burwick, Greta Fong. Seated: Diana Schmidt, Judy Ulfers, Shirlee McCarthy, Sharon Nelson, Miss Leila Woods, adviser; Lloyd Kuehn, Irene Bell. In all types of government there is a certain nucleus of leadership, a group that plans the major projects and works toward the general benefit of each indi- vidual. The Student Council at DSTC, representing the entire student body, ful- fills this capacity. Some of the special projects undertaken by this year's Council were the making of much needed changes in the Constitution, setting up a student-faculty disciplinary board, and starting plans for a DSTC student-union building. Under the leadership of President Lloyd Kuehn, the 1958-59 Council did a job of which they can be proud. 61 ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA Row One: Yvonne Boehrson, Josie Maier, Shirlee Smith, Jean Lillibridge, Leila G. During 1958 the State Teachers College at Dickinson sponsored the Theodore Roosevelt Centennial Symposium. The objectives of the symposium were 1) to honor the memory of Theodore Roosevelt; 2) to recognize the role this area of the West played in the life of Theodore Roosevelt; 3) to emphasize Theodore Roosevelt’s high ideals of responsible citizenship as a guide for the future; and 4) to insure that DSTC, the only four-year college in the area of the state made famous by Theodore Roosevelt, lives up to its responsibility in calling attention to his ideals, which served the nation in his time and which can continue to serve it in the future. Areas of emphasis chosen to commemorate the centennial were 1) the moral and spiritual imperatives of free government; 2) Theodore Roosevelt’s impact on American life; 3) the family and home as the crucible of American character; 4) the conservation of national resources; and 5) the individual’s participation in government. Prominent persons were invited to give talks on these topics. Those who took part in the symposium were John F. Kennedy, U. S. Senator of Massachusetts; Dr. Howard K. Beale, Pro- fessor of History at the University of Wisconsin; Hermann H. Hagedorn, Executive Director for the Theodore Roosevelt Centennial Commission and a noted Roosevelt biographer; Secretary of the Interior Fred A. Seaton; and Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, governor of Maryland. 74 HOMECOMING - 1958 Chief Harlan Wash Princess Jean Lillibridge HOMECOMING CEREMONIAL Harlan Wash begins his reign as Savage Chieftain by taking the head- dress from the retiring chief. Part of the traditional ceremonial is the smoking of the peace pipe by the chief and his braves. With a sweep of the hand, Chief Harlan bids his tribe follow him to the bonfire and pep rally. HOMECOMING PARADE Bright sunny weather contributed to the success and enjoyment of the three-day 1958-59 DSTC Homecoming celebration. On Friday evening, October 24, the festivities got under way with the Indian Cere- monial and the pep rally and bonfire. Next day came the big parade and the afternoon football game with the Mayville Comets, which the Savages won. In honor of the many alumni that returned, an Alumni Banquet was held Saturday evening. Following the banquet was the Homecoming Dance, always a big part of the Homecoming celebration. DSTC Homecoming for 1958-59 was concluded with the Homecoming Band and Choir Concert at May Hall Sunday afternoon. 77 First place winner — the Phi Sig float. A correct prediction! DEDICATION To Mr. Clinton Sheffield, art teacher of Campus High School, we, the students, affectionately dedicate our section of the 1958-59 Prairie Smoke. Mr. Sheffield came to Campus High in 1953 to become our instructor in art. He is a native of Iowa and the youngest of five children. Mr. Sheffield was graduated from Story High School in Iowa; he then attended Moorhead State College for three years, and later fulfilled his military obligation in the United States Marines. After military service, he returned to Moorhead, where he completed work for a bachelor’s degree. He worked during the summer months at a Boy Scout Camp. He received his Master’s Degree at Teachers College, Columbia University. Mr. Sheffield is married to the former Dorothy Johnson and has two boys, Clinton Anson and Phillip Richard. Before coming to Campus High, Mr. Sheffield taught at Rapid City, South Dakota Junior High School, where he was supervisor of the annual and art teacher. Mr. Sheffield is membership chairman of Western Arts Association in North Dakota. Among the other organizations in which he is active are North Dakota Education Association and Kiwanis Club. In promoting the childrens’ interest in art, he has had radio programs, extension classes, and art contests. With the proceeds from the extension classes, he purchased a kiln for the Cam- pus High School and D.S.T.C. Campus High has had many excellent floats among which several have won prizes. Credit can be given to Mr. Sheffield for the displays of art work which have been admired at Campus High Proms. The proms have left with us lingering memories of our Junior-Senior days. Mr. Shef- field’s high school art classes have been responsible for many commendable projects such as the Indian Mosaics, Christmas program covers and the rural school building for the NEA Centennial. Mr. Sheffield is looked upon as a friend who is always willing to lend a helping hand when asked. We will always remember him for all he has done for Campus High and its student body. 87 Row One, Left to Right: Larry Marquart, Edith Franchuk, Vice President; Sherrie Nelson, President; Vaun Dalee Rhodes, Secretary and Treasurer; Paul Sticka.
