The coach of the team is Forrest Lathrop. The team played in competition with other teams in the North Dakota Intercollegiate Conference. Bob Wilkens and Al Schoenborn won the doubles championship. Wilkens defeated Schoenborn for the singles championship. -75- Track First row: Edwin Sahaydak, Don Simonieg, Bernard Schultz, Wayne Dettman, Don Duda, Ted Easton, Jack Kreitinger, Bill Red- mond, Albert Jacobs. Second row: Captain Joe Wax, Charles Wilz, Edward Riedl, Elmer Weber, Ted Sanders, Kenneth Heinle, Dale Wetzel, Wayne Davison, Coach Harry Weinbergen. The DSTC track team of i954 was not quite as powerful as those usually put together by Coach Weinbergen. Conference competition which was tougher than usual kept the Blue and Gray thinclads from winning any track meets. Despite the efforts of Captain Joe Wax, who collected 10 points for a tie for second place in scoring honors, and the rest of the team, their total of 33l2 points was good only for third place in the triangular meet. Bismarck JC took first place honors with 68lipoints. The next event the Savages were scheduled for was at Jamestown. Their I3 points in the eight team meet was good only for sixth place. Aberdeen, South Dakota scored 75 points to win the meet. Bismarck, Jamestown, and Minot once more bested the Dickinson team in a match at Bismarck. Jamestown won the match with 61 2f3, Minot and BJC each had 38, Dickinson 16 lf3, and Ellendale ll. After a two day meet involving eleven schools the Savages came home with only seven points. Jamestown was the site of the final meet of the season. It was the NDIC meet with all nine schools competing. The Savoges were fifth with ll points. Valley City went home with top honors. The Savages opened their 1954-1955 season in typical Savage fashion. They won their first eight games, de- feating teams from Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota, as we l as those from our home state, before their record was blemished by a 81-78 loss at Spearfish. The Savages set a number of team records as well as one conference record. ln the first two games they played Eastern Montana College of Billings and sent the visitors home with 81-73 and 90-86 losses. Uecker collected half of the teams 90 points the second night to set a new school individual scoring record for one game. Next was a road trip to the Capital City where they beat their old rivals, BJC by a 76-68 score. Northwest College of Minneapolis looked like a tough team when they came to Dickinson. Their team had more height than any other that the Savages played this season but when they went home there was another loss on their record, for the Savages had whipped them 84-66. Several nights later Spearfish STC came to town with intentions of stopping the high-flying Savages. When the game was over Dickinson had another scalp and the South Dakotans went home with an 80-64 loss. The Christmas turkey and the holiday lay-off did not stop the Savages from bringing home more scalps. They beat Spearfish 82-74 and Minot 86-81 to win the Holiday Tournament Championship at Dickinson for the second straight year. From the north came Bottineau School of Forestry for a conference game. Nearly all the 14Weinbergen men who dressed for the game got into the scoring column as the Foresters were handed a 92-46 defeat. On the road again, they were handed their first defeat the Foresters were handed a 92-46 defeat. On the road again, they were handed their first defeat at Spearfish. At one point of the ball game the h6me- standinq Spearfish crew led b 26 points. Time ran out before the Savages could close the gap completely. After that loss, things didn't go so well. At Jamestown, the red hotJimmies handed Dickinson its first conference loss by a 96-67 score. The Comets defeated the tribe 90-80 at Mayville. The Savages, playing on their home court later got revenge as they turned back Mayville 79-71. The 'hilltoppers' clipped Wahpeton Science 86-75, and Valley City 86-75 before losing at Ellen- dale by a staggering 90-60 score. H. J. WEINBERGEN Coach LeROY 'Pudge' BEAUDOIN Captain Another rival, Minot, by now had climbed to the conference lead and was next on the Sav- ages schedule. The teams played very carefully and the game was close all the way. The Beavers pulled away in the final minutes and won 76-83. The Savages avenged the earlier loss to Jamestown when they played host to the Jimmies. The final score: 72-65. The next three games were with teams that ended their seasons play in first, second, or third place in the conference. At Minot the Beavers, who won the conference title, again defeated the Savages. At home again, Ellendale and Bismarck came out on top in 89-73 and 84-69 scores respectively. At Bottineau, the Dickin- son cagers took an easy 77-59 win over the Foresters, but at Dickinson, Valley City gave their hosts a rough fight although the Savages did come through to win 83-74. That was the last college game for Seniors Ted Uecker, Roger Huffman, and Capt. Pudge Beaudain. Uecks made a big night of it as he made 20 out of 23 free throws to beat the old conference record of 18 in one game. Several other school records were set. The total of 1707 points the team scored during the season is a new high. Their game average of 77.59 is also the highest. Big Phil Kahler's average of rebounds per game is a new high in the rebounding department. Bud Perry's field goal percentage, 48.6'Z:, is a record. The team as a whole mode over 4095 of their field goal attempts - a new mark also. Ted Uecker scored more points, 535, then any player ever has for DSTC in one season. His free throw percentage f83.69'7El is also a new record. The team ended the season with 14 wins and 8 losses. They tied with Wahpeton for fourth place in the conference with identical 8-7 records. ob Y Q-O., Q!! Mr. Hnottavange came to Model Hi in l950, as assistant to Nr. lver l. Grindstuen. Two years later, upon the retirement of Nr. Grind- stuen, he became our Principal. A native of Pennsylvania and a graduate of the McCellandtown, Pa., High School, Mr. Hnottavange took his B.A. and M.A. Degrees at Colorado State College of Education at Greeley. Later he taught at Julesburg, Colorado. For four and a half years he served with the Army Air Corps with the rank of sergeant, during and following World War ll. ln the field of education Mr. Hnottavange maiored in social studies and minored in Eng- lish. He holds memberships in Phi Alpha Kappa, Educational Fratemity and Phi Alpha Theta, Historical Fraternity. 106- Mr. Hnottavange is married and has a very charming little daughter, May. The Seniors of Model High School are proud to have been with Nr. Hnottavange during most of his time on our campus. He has been a capable leader in promoting the activities of the school. Under his guidance our student Council was organized. It was through his efforts that we now have our own basketball coach. We may make the claim of being the first school in Dickinson to offer a course in Behind-the-Wheel Driver Education as a result of his faesight. He ,is interested in us, the students, and in our teen-age problems. His high ideals of character and his de- termination to make every student a good student are evident in all his work with the school. Every student respects and admires him, and each one of us will remember him as the center of our high school life. QI K9 f XR wi Q I, 0 sr ffm Q, cY V nc iff! With a record of wins and losses as compared with the previous season's record of wins and losses, the Braves are making a berth for themselves in conference play. This record looks even better when the Braves' total score of 979 is placed against their opponents' 1032 a difference of only 53 points for the nineteen games played. For the second successive year the Braves won the opening night game in the District 7 -151- sz T 46 39 48 51 56 58 57 51 They Model Taylor ---- --44--- --- Belfield--- -- 56--- --- St.Mary's--- --38--- --- GlenUllin-- -- 4l--- --- St.Mary's--- -- 32--- --- Abbey ---- --47--- --- Bqwman--- --5l-- Halliday--- -- 66-- Halliday ---- -- 59-- WatfordCity -- --68--- --- Hebron ----- --63--- --- New England-- -- 54-- Medora ---- -- 60-- Belfield -- --6l--- --- Abbey ----- --55--- --- Killdeer ----- -- 58-- New England- - - - 68-- Killdeer --------- 57-- Hebron ---------- 54--- --- Tournament Won l - Lost 2 Killdeer --------- 55--- --- Beach ---------- 71 --- --- WatfordCity-- -- 72--- --- COACH Forrest Lothrop 48 57 63 49 58 52 42 46 54 48 53 52 65 Class B tournament. ln this game Kenneth Wanner, a key man on the squad, suffered an injury which took him out of tournament play. His loss was a serious blow to the Braves, but, although the score boards showed defeats in successive games, the Braves were by no means defeated in spirit. The squad will lose four Seniors this year, among them high scoring Captain Wilfred Kovash, but with a good reserve and some well-trained hoopsters coming in from Bob Burda's successful 'B' Team the Braves have hopes for a victorious '55-'56 season.
