In Coach Weinbergen’s own words, At the beginning, I figured we would be able to call it a successful season if we won one game.” This probably helped more than hindered the Savages because no one expected them to do too much and until the final conference game with Jamestown on Homecoming, there was little or no tension or pressure on the players. However, the Savages exceeded all expectations and for the first time in the football history of DSTC, pushed their way to the top in the North Dakota Inter-collegiate conference. Compiling a five won (one game forfeited) and none lost average in conference play the Savages shared the title of Champions with Valley City which also completed its season un- defeated in conference play. Although Valley City had the same won-lost record, 5—0, they won two of their games by forfeit where the Dickinson team won only one by forfeit, so the Savages feel that, theoretically, at least, they are Champs in the NDIC. In the season opener, the Savages journeyed to Spearfish where they went down in defeat 20—0. Led by Radigan, who scored twice in the first half, the Spearfish team proved to be too big and tough for the Dickin- son eleven. Two touchdowns, called back for Dickinson, could have been the breaks that Spearfish needed to win. In the first quarter Beaudoin plucked a Spearfish fumble out of the air and ran 50 yards for a TD. Later in the game, Engelhardt grabbed another Spearfish fumble and scampered over the goal line. However, both plays were recalled by the officials. In the second game at Bismarck, the conference opener for Dickin- son, the Savages came from behind to down Bismarck Junior college 19—6. Bismarck jumped into a 6—0 lead in the first quarter when Hummel com- pleted a pass to one of his teammates in the end zone. Late in the second period Engelhardt passed to Beaudoin who raced 30 yards for the first Dickinson score. Two minutes later, Engelhardt again passed, this time to Kreitinger in the end zone for the second Savage TD. Anderson booted the extra point and the Savages led 13—6 at half-time. In the third period, Beaudoin passed to Engelhardt for the last touchdown. Captain John Groll led a much improved Savage defense and hopes of local fans went up a notch. Captain John Groll Tony Engelhardt Les Collins Bud Dire The first home game scheduled was forfeited to the Savages when Bottineau was unable to field a team. In the final conference tilt, the Savages had to come from behind to win their Homecoming game from Jamestown in the last few seconds in a thrilling finish that left most of the spectators and the majority of the players breathless and also gave the Savages a Homecoming victory and a share of the conference championship. On the opening kickoff, Becker, Jamestown’s speedy half- back, picked up the ball on his own three yard line, fumbled it, picked it up again, cut for the sideline and raced 97 yards for the first score of the game. Seeing the championship slipping froi,i their grasp, the Savages defense played inspired ball during the remainder of the game, holding Jamestown to a minus yardage after the opening play. The rest of the first half was a battle of defenses with neither team able to present a formidable scoring threat. On a muddy field in Ellendale, the following week, the Savages squeezed by a big Dusty team 13—6. The Savages scored first early in the second period when Engelhardt passed to Tom Gratz who scampered the rest of the way to score. Anderson kicked the extra point. On the next play, Ellendale came right back as Ratzlaff rambled 76 yards for a TD. Collins blocked the attempted conversion and the Savages still led. The Savages clinched the game in the fourth period as Tom Gratz intercepted a Dusty pass and ran 25 yards for the second Dickinson score. Reaching the peak of their season’s performance in the second half of their first home game, the Savages scored four times while holding Minot scoreless to defeat the Beavers 27—0. The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The first counter came in the third period when Beaudoin plunged over for the TD. Shortly after- wards, Tom Gratz exploded through center for the second score. The next TD came in the fourth period as Beaudoin intercepted a Minot pass and carried it into the end zone. The final counter came when Beaudoin passed to Engelhardt who carried it over the goal line. Don Anderson kicked the three extra points. After this game, championship fever began to run rampant in Dickinson. Adam Gratz John Danks Wayne Davison Ron Flatz In the third period the Savages drove to the Jamestown 5 where Engelhardt passed into the end zone. The pass was batted down by a Jamestown defender right into the arms of Tom Gratz. Ander- son missed the all-important con- version and the score was knotted at 6—6. In the fourth quarter, Dickinson drove from their owr 20 to Jamestown’s 7 where the Jimmies stiffened and a penalty set the Savages back to the 12. Then, on third down, with Engelhardt holding on the 18, and but 14 seconds left in the game, Anderson booted the ball through the goal posts for a three-pointer that won the Home- coming game, put the Savages at the top of the NDIC and gave Coach Weinbergen, clothes and all, a shower he had been waiting 27 years to get. John Bartholome Duane Emch Pudge Beaudoin Clyde Welch Herbie Herauf In the final home game, the Savages played an unbeaten Rapid City eleven and lost 6—0, in 10 degree weather on a frozen field. Midway in the first period Dickinson missed a golden opportunity to score with a fumble on Rapid City’s 4 on first down with goal to go. As the first quarter ended, Rapid City was again in the hole as Parker downed Wright on his two yard line on an attempted punt return. Early in the third quarter Dickinson again fought its way to Rapid City’s 9 where they lost the ball on downs. Late in the fourth quarter Rapid City’s Blackwell scored the games lone TD on a cutback over tackle and a 53 yard run. Don Anderson Tony Mandan Duane Barry Myron Buckli Bob Krogh Jack Kreitinger Billy Branvik Sammy Birdsall Edwin Hall In the season’s last game an inspired Billings team upset a strongly favored Dickinson team 6—0 in 70 degree weather in Billings. It was the first game the Savages had played with the temperature above freezing. For 59 minutes the two teams played scoreless ball but with less than a minute to play, Billings’ Kozeluh finally scored on a play that some Savages still say was stopped short of the goal line. First place winners for the Savages were Hvke - shot-put, Horning - high jump, Thomas-high hurdles, Tamayo - 100 yd. dash, Gratz - low hurdles and Hagburg - 220. The Savages won their third track meet at Bismarck May 11 to show their superiority over Bismarck JC, Minot Teachers and Bottineau Forestry. Savages first place winners were Thomas, Hyke, Hagburg, Wilson, Gratz, Horning and Anderson. The Savage thinclads suffered their only defeat of the season at the NDIC meet, May 26 at Jamestown. Jamestown took first place while the Dickinson team grabbed the runner up spot. Other teams in the event were Ellendale Normal, Bismarck JC, MayviUe Teachers, Minot Teachers, Bottineau Forestry, Wahpeton Science, and Valley City Teachers. Only first place winners for the Savage squad that day were Wiley Wilson - pole vault; Ray Thomas - high jump; and Milo Dullum - two mile. However, the next night, the Eastern Normal Yellowjackets came back strongly to dump the Savages 54—68. It was the first time the Savages had been beaten on their home court in nearly two years. The following night against Rocky Mountain college of Billings, the locals came through with a 60—53 win. In a three-game series in Billings, the Savages hit an early slump — dropping all three, two to Eastern Normal by scores of 66—65 and 53—49, and to Rocky Mountain college, 61—51. Coming back to their home floor, the locals seemed to be rejuvenated playing two games in two nights, they thumped Bottineau 92—50 and edged out Minot 59—56. On a two game road trip to Valley City and Mayville, the local team ran over Valley City 63—55 and was edged by Mayville 78—74 even though Larry Otterson poured in 28 points. Traveling to Spearfish in a non-conference tilt, the Savages downed the South Dakota Teachers 62—60 in an overtime game. The next game against Bismarck proved to be one of the best the locals played all season. The Mystics, who were leading the conterence with four wins and no losses, were humbled to tne tune of 86—60 with Larry Otterson again throwing in 28 points. This win put Dickinson in a tie for the conference lead. Playing Spearfish in the next home game, the Savages came through with a 79—70 win. Bottineau was the foe for the next conference tilt and the locals again dumped the Foresters, this time 72—45. In the next game which was at home, the Savages defeated a battling Valley City team 64—62 to go into a tie for first place in conference standings. Traveling to Ellendale the locals defeated the Dusties 65—64 in an overtime game and moved into undisputed first place in the conference race with a 7—1 record. But a slump hit in the next contest while Jamestown was red-hot and the Savages were whipped 85—60 on their own floor. It was the second home loss of the season for the Savages. Needing a win at Minot to hold their top spot in the conference the Savages were unable to come through as the Beavers held them to a lowly 41 points while scoring 63. After the loss to Minot, the locals needed a win at Bismarck to stay in the conference race. Even though Captain “Satch” Krieg turned in one of the best games of his career and the entire team played spirited ball, the final score read 70—66 in Bismarck’s favor. The loss at Bismarck seemed to take the heart out of the locals as they went on to lose the remaining four games of their schedule, losing to Ellendale here 59—61, Wapheton here 70—65 and to Rapid City there 78-52 and 86-64. Throughout the season the Savages scoring load was carried by Larry Otterson, Teddy Uecker, and Captain Krieg, who were nicknamed “Dickinson’s Big Three”. Villard Model 3dghSchool MR. IVER GRINDSTUEN Principal of Model High School Model High has a place of prominence not only in the institution but also in the Slope Area. Much credit, as was reported in a previous annual, is due to Mr. Grindstuen, who has been princi- pal of Model High since 1936. In addition he is Supervisor of Secondary Teachers Training and Chairman of Education and has spent his entire life in educational work in North Dakota, after he received his B. A. from Luther College and his M. A. from the University of Wisconsin. As a teacher and administrator for over forty years in Rhame, Bowman, Belfield, Beach and Model High, he is well acquainted with the problems in the Slope Area and with this experience he has led Model to high degrees of success and importance. Under his capable supervision the high school enlarged not only its curriculum but also its extra-curricular activities including, Football, Basketball, Track, Pep Squad, G.A.A., High School Girls’ and Boys’ Chorus, Band, F.T.A., F.H.A., and Forum. Under his guidance Smoke Signals was also organized and the boys and girls are given a chance to participate in Girls’ and Boys' State, A Rotary Vocational Trip, Contests in declamation and music, and the D.A.R. award in Citi zenship.
