And yet indisputably I am, or rather, as we are now in the Senior year, I was. , , Who am I? What are my antecedents? How did I fit myself for so eminent an office? . My name is J. Stanley Rhinestone. I was born in the southern part of La- gano, one of the myriad of miniature islands that dot the west coast of Velspar. I remember distinctly the day of my birth-April 2, 1900-for my father, Otto, upon seeing me for the first time, a few hours after my natrvrty, made a re- mark which has never ceased to puzzle me: Thank goodness it wasn t yes- terday, anyhow. To this parent I owe my profound love of literature, the opera and soccer. My mother was a woman of deep! religious fervor. This feeling she sought to inculcate in me. I can not recall the time when she did not exhort me to fervent prayer. If I desired a toy or knick-knack of some sort, she would say, Pray for it, Stanleyg pray hard for it, and you will be cer- tain to ,get it. And upon such occasions, I would make this rep-ly to her, in my pert, childish manner: Pray Hell! I want it and either you or Pop's gotta buy it for me. I lived with my parents until I had attained the age of 12. And then I went to sea. I was no stranger to it, for in the children of Lagano there is born a great love for maritime life. Accustomed to the daily spectacle of vessels of all nations and descriptions, some huge, some small, some spotless, some un- kempt, both passenger and freight, moving about the harbor, they long for the time when they, too, will embark upon a life of glorious adventure. My first cruise was to the West Indies in an old British Merchantman. I shipped as an ordinary. And I had not long to wait for adventure. The second day out, the mate, a gigantic, raw-boned Norwegian, handed me a coil of rope and ordered me to deposit it abaft the hatch. Now I was only a child of 12 and on my first voyage. Not only was I ignorant of the locality of the hatch, but had I found it, I should not have known where abaft,' it was. No one was near that I could ask. The mate I could not, for when I had signed the ship's articles, I had professed to have no small knowledge of seamanship. I knew when I took the rope, if I did not place it abaft the hatch without any hesitation, I should make the rest of the trip in irons. Irons! How I wished at that moment I had followed my mother's advice and learned to pray for whatever I wanted. Certainly, no one ever wanted anything more than I wanted that hatch, and more specifically, abaft that hatch. And then I was knowing not even what saint had jurisdiction over hatches. I was distressed that during the twelve years of my earthly existence, twelve, long years, I had neglected to acquaint myself with a thing of such colossal importance as a hatch. r Finally, in desperation, I forsook my quest. I had found the galley, the mizzenmast, the boatswain, the stern, the taffrail, the foretop gallant yard, and a small can of sardines, but no hatch! Just as I was on the- poin-t of calling to the mate to put me in irons if he pleased, I hit upon the idea of dropping the coil of rope over the side of the ship and into the -sea.
