Measured by the records set by some of the later institutions, it is rather a glacier-like advance, the slowness of which is merely additional emphasis of its irresistability. Its history is rather more like that of the ordinaryprofessional man it trains, an initial lengthy period in which life is a mere meagre existenceg followed by a second period in which the livelihood, though still small, is gradually in- creasing, and a third period of a middle-aged healthy affluent standing. In the year 1836 at a time when the study of law in colleges was a com- paratively recent conception, and 'when there were but three or four of these institutions in the country, the Hon. John Reed, Judge of the Courts of Cum- berland County, was placed at the head of the newly formed Department of Law in Dickinson College. 4 ' Classes were first held' in Judge Reed's home, but were later held in his offices Judge Hepburn, one of the first graduates of thisschool, which was known as the Reed School of Law, become a Professor but upon succeeding Judge Reed as Judge of the Cumberland County Courts gave up teaching At the death of Judge Reed, Judge Graham, then Judge of the same court, suc- ceeded as the head of the Department In 1882, when he died, the College let this part of its curriculum drop - V For ai period of eight years following, no Law was taught in Carlisle But in 1890 in response to the demand of the alumni, the Law ,School was reorgan- ized however this time as a separate institution with a separate Board of In- corporators Dean Trickett who was even at that time a man of wide ex perience as an educator and an authority in legal literature and who had an extensive practice was chosen to head this school So far however, there was little more than courage with which to start the school The Deans own l1 brary was at hand but there was no building The trustees of the College gladly allowed the old abandoned church at the corner of Pomfret and West Streets to be used Through the generosity of William C Allison of Phila delphia the building was fitted up for use From the first the School grew steadily and that growth has continued until the present interrupted only by the war in which the Law School suffered in common wrth all other insti tutions in the country The Law School issued its first publication on January first 1897 It was known as the Forum until 1908 when the name was changed to The Dick inson Law Review Through this medium the fame of the school and its excellent faculty has been advanced an incalculable degree The constant growth of the school soon made manifest the need for a new building and year after year the necessity became greater but it was not un til 1918 that it was satisfied fully ten years after the first agitation was begun The success of the drive was mainly due to the labors of a few alumni Among the few the name of Horace B King of Harrisburg stands foremost He interviewed personally every alumnus in this and neighboring states and wrote to all others On August 16 1918 the building erected at a total cost of S57 026 88 was formally dedicated At that time all but S3 660 of the total cost had been subscribed This history could not be complete without the mention of a few more names Hon Wilbur Fisk Sadler deaceased 1920 Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is so inextricably interwoven in every move of the school that it is impossible to unravel the story of what he has actually done Through CContmued on Page 643 N Nx N NXNN XQXXY QX YXNX XNX ,WNmKN f XQ 1XNXQXNNNNXX XX X Yk NXN3 XNS WX I , - n I , I . 1 K . , . . . . . . 7, 2 5 ..
