I I' , .. ,I 'sax ' me I 69 J Dr. Henry: Yeagley, designer and originator. hat is perhaps the first multiple-telescope observa- tory at any American college or university was opened and dedicated here at Dickinson on De- cember 13. Built at a cost of Y1550,000, most of the funds were provided in a gift from Roscoe O. Bonisteel of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a Dickinson Alumnus and trustee. The Dickinson Observatory was conceived, planned, and the construction supervised by Dr. Henry L. Yeag- ley. It is housed in a box-like structure suspended from the roof of Althouse Science Hall and contains, in addi- tign to one refracting telescope, three eight-inch and three ten-inch reflecting telescopes. Dr. Yeagley commented that Hthe whole purpose of our observatory is to provide more people with an under- standing of what the universe is like and how man ob- serves it.', To encourage the widest possible use of the observatory by the public, it is open for public viewing four nights each week throughout the year S1518 J 0 one View slldiiigmailunilnulitlroof.
