. M A valuable friend and advisor to the student body of-Dickinson College was Alan Coutts, former Dean of Men, whose sudden death atfthe age of 56 was a deep shock to all who knew him. His ability to carry out the func- tions of his office as Dean of Men in a warm, friendly manner made him an effective guide to all who came tophim for advice. His sin- cere interest in each individual student enabled him to help many Dickinsonians master their prob- lems. ' -' P i 1 J Devoted to the theater and to writing, Professor Coutts was in two Broadway plays asian under- study and actor, and in more gre- cent years has appeared occasion- ally .witlt .the Allcnherry Players. K ,. .av ,' ICAT IO Author of 200 radio dramatic scripts, many one-act plays and numerous articles, Professor Coutts also contributed to 4'Speech Handbook and was the author of a speech manual for the New York Telephone Company. Iggphis enthusiastic support of Mermaid Players productions, his position as assistant swimming coach in charge of divers, and his participation invfgStudent Senate activities, one can glimpse the large and ,vital .role played 'by Professor aeseflouttcswin the life fof the Dickinson community.
