lil 5 Q MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD LUCILLE VON DOHLEN Lucille Von Dohlen was chosen by a committee of the faculty as the most outstanding student of the january class, and is to receive the meritorious award for her good work and cooperation in the school. Character, personality, scholastic record, and participation in the school activities are therbasis for the selection by the judges. She attended elementary school in North Bergen, and entered Dickinson Accredited Evening High School in September, 1931, taking the academic course. Her superior work endeared her to the members of the faculty, who found her to be not only bright, renned, quick, and intelligent, but reliable, anxious to help, and pleasant to all. She easily adapted herself to her surround- ings, and the many friends she has made are proof of her sportsmanship and superior qualities. She was an excellent leader and worked with a calm dignity that will be remembered by all those associated with her. She found time for many extra-curricular activities while maintaining her high scholastic standing. The Literary Club, of which she was a member for three years, elected her its President for two terms, and in addition, made her a member of the club's Executive Committee. For one term she was Exchange Editor of the Night Watchl', and was a member of the Reception Committee for two years, serving as President for two terms, She also was actively engaged on the Prom Committee and the Pin and Ring Committee for the january Class. Miss Von Dohlen will continue her studies at Fordham University. We regret losing such an excellent student. It proudly holds the Alexander F. Ormsby trophy for state-wide oratorical leadership, in the john Marshall contest. In its long service and existence it has developed the leading oratorical successes of our school. His enthusiastic and whole hearted interest in extra curricular activities, his sparkling personality, and his high scholastic standing were the primary factors in the committeeis decision. During his third term he became interested in the schools activities and served on the Night Watch as a reporter. He displayed unusual journalistic ability and was made Sports Editor for the term of September, 1934. The following term he was elected Editor-in-Chief of the Night Watch. He was a representative of the Student Council and the General Organiza- tion for six terms and was twice Student Chairman of the Executive Committee. He was also Vice-President of the General Organization Council. Near the close of his career at D.A.E.H.S., Daly entcjed the Debating Society and was soon a member of the Debating Team. His remarkable ability as orator was displayed on several occasions in inter-scholastic debates. His crowning achievement was the glowing triumph on April 27, 1936, at john Marshall College, where competing in a state-wide contest, he delivered his speech, The Supreme CourtfTruly lmpartialn and won for D.A.E.H.S. the Alexander F. Ormsby Trophy, donated by john Marshall College. As june Editor of the Owl. he has rendered his final service to the school in an undergraduate capacity. This Owl is a lasting token from one who served his Alma Mater faithfully and well. We, of D.A.E.H.S. heartily congratulate Daly and hope that this glowing exit may be but the beginning of a successful career in whatever field of endeavor he may choose for his life's work.
